An airborne receiver must maintain control of the ball if going to the ground in the process of completing a catch. As he was falling to the ground and still moving, he lost possession of the ball once he hit the ground and therefore not a catch and, hence, not down by contact since he did not have possession of the ball.

From NCAA rulebook: Airborne receiver A85 possesses the ball and in the process of going to the ground, first contacts the ground with his left foot as he falls to the ground inbounds. Immediately upon hitting the ground, the ball comes loose and touches the ground. RULING: Incomplete pass. An airborne receiver must maintain control of the ball if going to the ground in the process of completing a catch.

That's exactly what I saw and was my argument here at work that night. I didn't really care who won the game, but I seem to pull for the lesser ranked team.

There's the best clip of the interception I could find.

What exactly is the definition of "in control of the ball"?

He certainly wasn't bobbling the ball, and had it pretty firmly gripped as he hit the ground. Not to mention Reid pulls the ball from his hands well after he had hit the ground. (which brings me to another question, what exactly considers a player 'down?')

Not trying to say the ref made the wrong call, but I spent my whole life playing the football you play with your feet, we only have 17 laws to remember :D

The enviorment in the stadium was amazing, our kickers suck ass, and our o coordinator isn't much better, honey badger should have been thrown out and the ncaa should still suspend him anyways, all in all i feel the best team didn't win the game as we left to many opportunities on the table, that being said LSU is pretty much your national champs now unless stanford can beat them.

miller, that is spot on. the interception was a correct call in my opinion. as you said. reciever never had complete control over the ball, and it never touched the ground. it was an amazing play by the lsu defender (forget his name). and even though it was low scoring, and there were a lot of special teams mistakes, it was fun to watch such a physical game. 2 teams trying to run it against 2 of the best defenses in college football. and even the option offense that lsu was running for the last 3 quarters was entertaining to watch.

this is why i love college football. i am a USC fan, but not as die hard for them as i am the vikings in the NFL. i just love to see top teams, with top players, play close games in college.

Yeah watching the running game was a good time. Made me think back to little league football when my coach made us run the wishbone because he was such a hardcore tx fan. lol needless to say we didn't win a lot of games.

As a football guy, it was an incredible game outside of Bama special teams. Game ball goes to the LSU punter. Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Not necessarily the best defenses I've ever seen, but definitely the two best I've ever seen on one field.

Interception was nasty, and I agree with the call. Did not seem like the receiver truely had possession of the ball through the catch and, since the ball never touched the ground, the defender can take the ball away to gain the turnover.

Blown away by how bad the Bama kickers were. Not even close on the first three attempts. Saw the Bama kicker in high school and he should be playing linebacker at SMU, not kicking at Alabama.

Anyone watch Tech v Tx? Game was ridiculous.
i go to texas and a big fan so im kind of biased. but its so good to see the team RUN THE BALL after years of no running game whatsoever. weve got like 3 really solid backs, maybe 4.

From what I saw alabama made quite a few mistakes.

What are your thoughts on that interception? Looked to me like he had the ball, but then again I'm no pro ref.

Wow. I'm having no luck watching the game. My internet was down until about 15 minutes ago, and now I can't find a decent steam.

Definition of ram it down their throats.

And I think Bama by double-digits. LSU would win by 3-5 at home.
