They changed the layouts with phpbb 3.0, so right now they are turned off because they make everything look broken and hard to read.

At some point I'll probably make some heavy modifications to the theme so that we can fit them in, as there are a lot of little things that are unfinished with the forum theme. I had just prioritized bigger projects first. I'll get around to making sigs works eventually, but right now it's not worth the damage it does to the usability of the forums.

The one header that seems to make the user control panel hard to see is the harrington mid from the POV of midhouse.

EDIT: Nevermind I see that shading you are talking about now, looks good Sears.

Re: 1911 homepage updates

Well I finally have the headers on all of the pages I visit on the forums. I feel it really gives it a nice, finished look. Splitting up all the links to "Control Panel", "Forums" and then my user name with the other options looks neat, clean and organized. It's simplistic and easy to navigate; precisely how I like the forums I browse to be.

Edit: Swiss, I was pretty used to seeing "User Control Panel" up there. It doesn't seem any harder to find in my opinion. Sometimes the font color can get lost in the the mixture of colors in the header, but the the opacity of the shading behind the links do make it easier to see.

Yeah maybe, I dunno. I'll experiment with it.

Re: 1911 homepage updates

by Swiss » Thu Feb 02, 2012 10:50 am

yeah that works great. (oh and the headers are loading fine now for me). i like the idea of the header linking back to the front page, seems to fit better.

the only other thing would be to maybe move down the user control panel below the header? its just a little hard to see up there and looks a bit out of place.

Re: 1911 homepage updates

by Sears » Thu Feb 02, 2012 10:48 am

Ok, the breadcrumbs are now on the bottom of the header, but don't include a link to the frontpage. The header itself now links you back to the home page. Does this work better?

I'm trying to find the best way to have an easy one click back to the frontpage (ala gotfrag).

Re: 1911 homepage updates

by Sears » Thu Feb 02, 2012 10:07 am

There should be a header loading each page, not sure what's going on if one isn't havent ran into that yet.

Right now, on the forums, you can click anywhere on the header to take you back to the forum index. Would it be better if that linked you back to the frontpage (ala gotfrag) and we reverted the breadcrumbs back to pre-frontpage?

I could also make the breadcrumb text a pixel or so larger probably.

I'll experiment with the breadcrumbs and see if they work well on the bottom of the header.

Re: 1911 homepage updates

by Swiss » Thu Feb 02, 2012 9:17 am

ace, youve seen it when it has the header images on the forum right?

i agree with the others. i think it would be nice for the breadcrumbs to be below the header. you could probably leave the user control panel over the header though

Re: 1911 homepage updates

by acetamino » Thu Feb 02, 2012 9:10 am

Same Swiss. I navigate on my phone in between classes and liked it better when it was just the forum index breadcrumb at the bottom of the page, not home and forum. Harder for me to pick it out now without zooming in! The breadcrumbs at top do feel too high when no picture loads, but I'm sure that's just a little bump in the road

Re: 1911 homepage updates

by Swiss » Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:46 am

wait is it just me or do the headers not appear on the top consistently. i assume its because youre still working with it, sears

I personally like it linking back to the forums index page right now. For me it makes it easier than clicking the small Forums link every time to go back from wherever I am. Simply going to the top and clicking anywhere on header and i can get back easily.

I think it would be more useful to go back to the forum index page rather than going to the home page every time. People can use the link back to the home page once, but if it links back to the Index page of the Forums then they can keep using while they go through and read all the different threads.

On the other tabs you should keep it as is too with articles, media etc. all linking back to the home page.

my 2cents

Yeah, I'm trying to find the right balance for it. Like I said it's all trial and error.

I also wasn't sure how people typically navigated the site.

Part of this is that I'm trying to integrate the forums and the front page as much as I can. So I wanted to have one consistant header.

For now I made the header on the forums link back to the forums, but it might work out better to have it link back to the fron page, I dunno. And we can always move the breadcrumbs around if you'de think it would be better to have them on the bottom of the header.

And all the actual header images are totally beta. I haven't decided on any long term logotype yet because I'm trying to figure out how everything else is going to look and function first.

That's really dumb.

So, I've decided (if you haven't noticed), that if you post on the front page without having selected an avatar, that you are subject to me picking one out for you at the mercy of google and total randomness.
