Honestly, I really liked playing Caen2, Thunder, Koln, Heutau, and Cherborg. I would put zafod in there too if not for the awful spawn and nade bugs that rendered it useless for match play once they were discovered.
There was something about the level of strategy involved with the bigger, dynamic spawning maps that isn't a part of the game any more. For instance, on a map like Heutau, there was a TON of strategy that went into how you went about attempting to attack the middle flag on initial, and how to defend it once you got it. It could literally make or break the game in just a few tense moments.
In 3.1, on maps like Heutau, Zafod, or Cherbourg. No match was ever the same, and there was so much variability as to how the opposing team was going to come at you, and there were always incredibly tense moments when the two teams met in the middle, and either adjusted to the other teams strategy and positioning, or had to scramble to adjust to losing the big flag. You always had to be on guard, because the potential for someone to slip through and ninja the back half of the map and flank your team from behind was so high. There was just a whole other level of gameplay in beta DoD that doesn't exist anymore.
Yes, it could get annoying running the long distance from spawn to where the action was. Yes, it slowed the game down. Yes, there was far less fragging. Yes, it de-emphasized individual player skill. But, I don't think that necessarily made for a lesser game at all.
Strategy wise, the game is much simpler now. Everyone has their routes mostly based on their guns, end every team knows what to expect, and where people are going to be coming from.
I don't think you should play maps like Heutau every week, but they definitely have their place in DoD and it was always a nice mix up in the map rotation. It's sad that the community lost such a huge element of the game like it did post-retail. However understandable for mass-appeal in the esports world.
7v7 or 8v8 old school map tournament anyone?
