Yeah, the first ve (betas) was nig, poop-ship, tkz, dune, sgt pepper, bsoul, alcatraz, dawg etc. They added strife, plex, and ub3r in late 3.1 when 101st and iLan died.

Now that I am older and have more of understanding for the game I can see why certain players were needed for a team. Chaos and max were smart and could hold a route but would hardly win a one v one against the top players in the game where Kellen, dorito, and Marshall would frag like sobs.
Why are skill and self-control mutually exclusive in your mind? Dorito and deadbeat were the best players in the game because they were faster and had better aim and made better decisions than anyone else at their positions. Watch bryan's movies and ask yourself how often was he in a bad position and had to make a great shot to stay alive... and count those versus the times he was in a great position and hit a good shot that he made look easy. And that's in a movie, where someone's showing off his ability to hit incredible shots.

I don't expect you to know this because I don't think you've ever sniped, but the hardest skill to learn for a sniper is to not shoot, or to shoot slower. Call it self-control, or patience, but it's something that you have to train yourself to do if you want to be the best. Being able to tell the difference between someone showing their left shoulder to bait a shot and someone peeking with their left shoulder is fucking hard. If a sniper can't do that, they're not good. They're toast against anyone good. Your team straight up loses middle on rr2, and any other map with sniper windows, if your sniper can't do this and the other team's can. There were a lot of cal-i snipers that couldn't do that. Were they more or less skilled than snipers that practiced that level of self-control and visual recognition? You actually have to be faster than people that shoot at that shoulder bait if you want to be able to recognize it and then react. If you're that fast, you realize you can train yourself to be better than everyone else and you go do it. This applies to a ton of other situations where not shooting as fast as you can react gives you an easier, more consistently hittable shot.

x6 was the best because we had more skill and made better decisions than other teams, not one or the other. coL was likely the same, although I didn't play with them so I can't speak for them.

p.s. Max was taking rounds off carnage in ra3 at our Lethal Gamers bootcamp. He had really fucking good aim. If you associate proning (to ensure kills) with bad aim, it's because you've never been good.

Oh hello tr4gik.
It was ok, I mean we never really played again seriously after CPL summer '05 (we placed 13th? or 16th something?) We came back and played a few lans here and there in the CGS era thinking that maybe we could catch some of the money that DirectTV was throwing out at the time - played buy.com CGS qualifier/newegg lan fest and a few others. Then won the online qualifier for the CGS season 2 combine. Tied complexity on lan on nuke and after that tournament and visiting the playboy mansion we gave it up because clearly that was never going to happen again. Everyone was off in college and didn't have the time to play anyways.
We put the team back together last season and just showed up for matches (mostly played 4v5 because we didn't have backups). Once you have responsibilities it doesn't allow you to put in the time you need to compete with high school kids.

<3 you scotty for being the first person in the thread to even give our any team credit. I felt like the run we went on for about 4 or so years there was pretty crazy and warranted at least a couple mentions on here, we won every season/lan we competed in other than ONE cevo season when our roster was totally gutted and I just basically kept the team alive with ryan for the sake of playing. those days are clearly a year or so behind us now though. :( gg tonight btw. shit could have gone either way.

I ran 20ID during the sac era, twas me and Darkhorse (we both later joined hb and formed the first iteration of deadboLT together). When we were in 20ID we kept it pretty close playing 101st and qor, sac was the only team that we didn't stand much of a chance against. The varied rosters of deadbolt usually started strong and fell apart due to inactivity or something. we were never what one would call anywhere near top of invite, but i like to think we were pretty decent most of the time.

I do miss darkhorse( or bryan), spent alot of time playing this game with him.

anyways, yah sac was by far the most dominant team if you go solely by win to loss ratio. They never lost, not once in the time they played. It was shorter than most others but still, it was ridiculous.

no but srsly, The way I see it is in three eras (I'm not counting beta because that was an entirely different game)

1) up to and including Summer CPL 2005:
GW/x6. Even though veracity put together a very dominant season (possibly 2? I can't remember) of CAL-i, they really dropped the ball on LAN. coL was also very good but kind of a clear cut 2nd, as the tournament showed.

2) Between CPL 2005 and WSVG 2006:
coL. With the majority of the x6 guys not competing, and the only one who was on their squad, it easily solidified them as the most dominant. They wrecked everyone online (except for hsb in scrims, of course), and won WSVG. PK and rS were both very good at this time too, but couldn't really take a decisive win over coL from what I remember.

3) Post WSVG 2006 and the rapid decline in popularity:
I don't know anything about online play since 2006, but I went to a decent amount of LANs. I think the thunder/jetty guys with jaggon and ryanemo were clearly head and shoulders above the rest of the guys we played against at those tournaments. I'm not sure if these guys were the best online too, but it seems as if there's always a team or two of guys that either don't show up to LANs or don't do well at them. I always wondered how their style would have matched up against me back when my aim/reactions weren't awful and I played fps games on a daily or almost daily basis.

raz0r wrote:SAC was the most dominate team, I think alot of people leave them out because they were so oldschool. However, they destroyed everyone, and left you in awe as they would bunny hop by at 90mph and rock your helmet off with the garand.
SAC was a dominate team, but they only played DoD for about a year at the very beginning (01-02). They were unstoppable those first two seasons of STA, but there wasn't really a whole lot of other competition besides 101st, and even they hadn't grown into their own yet. But, 1.3b DoD was a totally different game than the late betas even, let alone post-retail. It was default half-life deathmatch with some kind of ww2 looking skins and models. That's why SAC was so good, they were a legit quake team that had been playing that style of game for years. SAC never played in CAL, and called it quits to go back to quake after beta 2.0 was released. So, while you have to mention them in the historical discussion, you can't give them the distinction of the "most dominant" DoD clan overall.
raz0r wrote:101st was always good, but even when they were at the top, I never felt them to be dominate, they were always pretty equal with the top 4 at their peak...
101st's legacy suffers for a lot of the same reasons that SAC's does. The game just wasn't very mature when they were at their peak. People also forget that 101st started as a PUB CLAN, but adapted to becoming a competitive team as the competitive community matured. They picked up were SAC left off after they left the game, but they were really only "dominant" in the short period between when Beta 2.0 and Beta 3.0. By the time 101st was to the point where they had the opportunity to dominate for a long period of time, they had to face competition from teams like Nt, ve, NUDE, hb, etc. And they ultimately couldn't get a leg up to really dominate the 3.1b era over the rest of those teams. As a result the 3.1b era goes to ve`, with NUDE, Nt, hb, and 101st just behind them.

I think that's what made the 3.1b era so much fun, both to play and to watch as a part of the community. There were so many good teams at the very top: 101st, Nt, ve, hb, NUDE, iLan, etc., but also a group of really strong second-tier invite teams that could hang with any of the 1st-tier teams on a good day (63rd, devil, 5.o, etc).

Post-retail, the game was in large part dominated by mostly the same groups of players comprising the same 10 or so teams for the last 5-6 years of competitive DoD. And that's why x6/coL win the "most dominant" clan in DoD history argument by default. They were a full step above the rest of the teams during the peak competitive years of the game. It's too bad that so many of those great players from 3.1 didn't keep playing the game, as the parity of skill at the invite level really suffered post-retail.

101st was always good, but even when they were at the top, I never felt them to be dominate, they were always pretty equal with the top 4 at their peak...

Man I miss playing... I was with KiS, then when things got more popular I was with Cosa. Eventually as my time dwindled I played with 38th in main for fun.

Nig was the original leader, and from what I remember he founded ve as well.

Nig was a solid team leader and an overall great guy. He was the sort of level headed, no-nonsense, quiet type. I think this was mostly attributable to the fact that he was in his late 20's or early 30's at the time so he wasn't the typical pre-pubescent, shit talking, living in mother's basement nerdy teenager (though I can't say for fact that Nig didn't live in this mother's basement :) .)

Poopship, from what I recall, was Nig's friend in real life, and also was a great, funny guy. Great, great player as well. Poopship and Nig would come on to vent, or teamspeak or whatever we used back then and we'd play during late nights plastered as all hell and we'd have drunken conversations together, talking random shit and having a good time.

Tkz was also an original member. Liked to talk a lot, but backed his talking with skill. Again, funny guy but his personality could get a bit abrasive at times. I think he eventually took over as the leader of ve, but I was already transitioning out of the game when that was happening. My best memory of tkz is playing these ridiculous pub sessions on Anzio where both of us would just kar whore and our scores would literally be like 82-6 and 79-3 respectively, without exaggeration. This was in the day when the kar was so beastly, and of course it was some random pub, but I remember thinking, "we aren't too bad at this game are we? "

Bsoul was probably my best mate on the team. We used to call him Halfrican for being, well, half African. I think he was our first MG player, and a hell of player too. I don't think he stuck around too long but a great guy.

Dune was a young Canadian kid who was a good, technical player. On his day he could carry the team with the light rifle.

Escher was part of the team for a bit and also a great guy. To speak completely objectively, his dod skills probably fell short of ve's standard, however he was such an instrumental member of the dod community, particularly with the creation of 1911, and I could argue that he had as much to do with ve's rise in popularity in the community as ve's overall skill level did.

Some of the teams we respected at the time were |101st|, Nt-, |NUDE|. For whatever reason I don't recall hb- being that dominant at the time, maybe they became more dominant after I left the game. And apparently there have been great teams since like x6, but obviously I cannot speak for them.

I'm glad to see that the dod community is still alive and well. Since quitting the game I've gone on to college, and am now attending law school. However I try to sneak dod sessions in here and there.

Good times.

Whoever is responsible for bringing the site back, thank you, and if escher is still around, what up!

Very good teams always have a certain mystique about them. Back when I was playing |101st| were the shit, everybody wanted to join them, and people were afraid to play against them. When I was on ve, our team oozed confidence, we knew we could take on anybody and we legitimately believed we were the best in the world, however delusional/realistic we were actually being. And often times we simply were the best, people didn't even want to scrim us because they knew they'd get their asses handed to them.
