im curious as to how the transition from having an mg on a team to never seeing an mg in a match occurred? can anyone narrow it down to when mgs were shunned upon in league play?
Haha, this actually kind of turned into a long answer:

MG's were fairly widely used in the late betas (they were added in 2.0), but only on bigger maps like zafod, heutau, cherborg, etc. It's important to understand that the game was much different in the betas. The balance of the game was totally different and it played much more Unreal Tournament like, and usually in 8v8 or 7v7 format. MG's more or less served as a counter-balance to that type of zerg rush playstyle.

MG's played much like Snipers do now, holding down large areas from a distance (windows, cracks, rubble). Snipers were a very aggressive class in the betas, as there was no scope fade, and there wasn't a no-scope accuracy penalty. To balance that, there was jump/prone/sprint shooting for all the other classes.

You never really had a dedicated MG player, but someone who would switch off when need be depending on your strategy, which could get a lot more complicated on much larger maps. It was often frowned upon to use mg's on smaller maps (like anzio), because not only was it pretty gay, but worthless anyway since in close quarters anyone could come jumping around a corner and take you out.

MG's were pretty much killed off when retail was released (May 2003) as the whole game was changed. It was pretty worthless to use mg's after that. KSP did infamously use 3 mg's on avalanche however, and never lived it down.

So, it wasn't so much that one day it became uncool to use mg's in league play, it was that the game totally changed and made them irrelevant. Maps got smaller, no jump shooting, sniper delay, 6v6, etc.

I remember playing a playoff match on heutau in cal-o when I was on UGA. I can't remember who we were playing against, but I do remember being stuck at the allied 2nd flag for FOREVER and eventually pulling out a win.
