You can convert the older demos for me! :D

Re: DoD Movie Contest

by JaGGoNdd » Mon Sep 03, 2012 12:31 am

I'll get together with jason steve and others and work out putting together a rar containing the demos and times of the clips we will all be using (it'd be a bad idea to just provide demos because then it isn't a guarantee that we all use the exact same footage lol) any hltvs for the clips will be included. if you all would be okay with trusting me to do so, I think I could put a rar together of a bunch of different timed demos of multiple people. enough for a 3-5 minute movie, with not just streaks but stupid crazy shots as well. and I can convert any older demos involved (hltv or povs) to the correct protocol just in case anyone can't use the coL demo player HLAE plugin that auto plays older protocol or has any other issue with it. let me know if you guys are down for that and I'll get to work on compiling it all right away so everyone can receive what they have to work with soon and we can figure out a deadline and get to work. i know it may be tempting to be extra picky and want to suggest adding things that won't end up in the entry footage but again, we all need to be on the exact same page with the footage. I've already spoken to steve a little bit and we talked about one clip mainly that would go into the rar along with a couple other potential oness. but either way we'll all have crazy shit to work with. just don't expect it to be BRAND SPANKING NEW frags. itll likely all be shit everyone has seen before but that's not the point here, for once this is about the editors and not the frags :D

also- gonna make sure the clips we will be working with are roughly half kar/sniper kills, half garand/stoss/auto kills. gotta be able to get clever here, not just sync up 112 kar shots with obvious guitar riffs ^_-

Well, if we all use the same demos, I think we will have virtually the same times. Will be equal to everyone. But i think 3 min its nice.

Yeah, only reason being if you don't want the voters to know who made what, it's a dead give away what video jaggon made, he's the only one that uses that bigger white crosshair. Not a huge deal to me though just throwing that out there.
haha, I didn't even think about that. That goes to show you how many dod movies I've actually watched start to finish (maybe 1 or 2) and paid attention to. They all look the same to me, no offense, just frags to music. Nothing has really stood out to me in years, except maybe Mutiny 2?

I can't tell if you're for or against it, but yes that's the point, removing biased towards voting. It doesn't matter if its for fun or not, people are people, and they will find a way to gain an advantage. In this case getting all their friends to vote for them.

People play dod for fun, there is nothing to gain from that either, yet people still hack and cheat.

Cutting the names from submitted videos won't hurt anything, so I don't see why it shouldn't be considered. If anything it prevents this from turning into a popularity contest.

Jason good thinking for allowing no names, it would be interesting to see if our community can figure out who makes what based on individual editing styles. Although the HD idea is nice, people such as myself (although I won't be participating) have pretty issues like space requirements or an older computer. I can't really get past rendering in 1024x600 as an example.

Yea the 720p was more wishful thinking on my part. Im a snob when it comes to that stuff. I figured everyone who could and IS making movies of any kind would be doing so at least 720p/HD at this point in time. But I defiantly don't want to make a rule that would prevent someone from participating, that's not my style (cough tpg).

I also thought it was necessary because I'm afraid someone might get a lower score/vote just cause they have a lower resolution video. I can see someone making a badass edit and rendering it out at 800x600 and losing to a mediocre edit at 1080p just because the 1080p would look cleaner and nicer..I was just trying to make the playing field as even and as fair as possible.

I dunno if you were refering to me corey, but that's exactly what I said, everyone gets the same footage and has to use that footage..As far as the old footage comment, it's not like if one person has clips, they can't upload and share it for everyone. I dont see how that changes anything?
tenks wrote: The competitors would get all the same clips and its up to them to edit and make something cool with it.

Tony I can see how older footage might be boring for some..I understand that...But I think the simpler we make this, the better chance it will actually happen and finish. Tying in with it being a FOTW really limits things and ties us down to whatever TPG is doing at the moment and what their schedule is...And the potential of FF's shitty clips etc. People not submitting...We should just get clips that are already out there.

A set amount of clips should be decided upon by the contestants/community/whoever. And if this is successful maybe it can expand..But I think we should just chose some of the top of the top clips out there from the best players.

other thoughts on some rules:

-720p minimum
-when judged/voted upon the videos shouldn't be labeled with who made them. that way there is no bias
-no country music

Re: DoD Movie Contest

by ComptonAssTony » Mon Aug 27, 2012 2:42 pm

Neat idea, here's my two cents.

1. Like Corey said, the footage pool or whatever would have to be the same for all competitors. As much as I love some of the older rapeage clips like scorch destroying pandemic or kellen killing everything, I'm a bit burnt out on reused footage. Therefore why not make it a glorified FOTW over two or three weeks of footage. Take submissions, select 10 or however many clips to be used for everyone, then get at it.

2. OR you guys could go a different direction and each make a two week FOTW. Arcane Studios used to make some really good FOTWs back in the day, it almost felt like a mini competition between some of their staff. Since there were four contestants (I think) wouldn't that fit perfectly over an 8 week season? I guess that's not ideal since it would be harder to judge if someone got shafted with a chemille/solitude combo vesus a harrington/rr2 or something along those lines.

These two ways would guarantee new footage and plenty of HLTVs and possibly vent recordings/shoutcasts though. Whatever's decided I'll gladly submit to :D

Re: DoD Movie Contest

I thought the point was for everyone to be working with the EXACT same footage. I feel as though a few of you kinda missed out on that point.

Yeah, I agree with you! Every team should record vent/ts3 for a few matches under this season(2-4 people/team. Not good if the guy that records start having trouble with anything without warning and it's not recording anything), and than it's up to the judges to pick demos from a few matches.

As far as rules/voting...Im digging the whole Iron Chef set up. A simple poll vote won't do...

How about a few categories (scoring 1 out of of 10) to be judged on?

Quality (like taste the most important, simply was the movie good/entertaining)
A/V sync (self-explanitory)
Presentation (basically style/effects/prettyness)
Originality (speaks for itself)

thoughts?
I'll fuckin lose on quality and presentation(specially effects) :D

Also we maybe should have

Music ( If the person who watch the movie enjoy the music or think it's crap)
