Has it been voted that? I usually don't keep up with news like that, but it doesn't surprise me.
SAO is on my top 10 list. I haven't watched anime in at least a year and a half to two years and I'm glad I started watching again or at least downloaded SAO. It's refreshing to actually have an anime with a solid plot. The world itself is interesting from a gamer's perspective and it has a really good feel to it. SAO is very similar to .hack//sign. A show I really liked.
Besides the world building, the best part of the anime is the pacing. In anime's like Naruto or Bleach, it takes a ridiculous amount of episodes just to move the plot forward. With SAO the time is always going forward months at a time and always with Kirito in a different situation where you can really get a feel for how he has grown as a character. Also, the romance was implemented into the story perfectly in terms of pacing. I hate shounen series where it's obvious that two characters like each other but nothing ever comes of it. But I do think the whole series is basically based off of Asuna and Kirito's relationship.
I read the wiki so I know what is going to or at least supposed to happen. I'm curious as to how they plan to end the series. They have 14/15 more episodes left and they are already on floor 70 something. If you read the wiki you'll understand where I'm coming from. If they don't decide to continue with the other stories then expect for them to beat the game and meet in real life.
The author of SAO also wrote accel world. It also has a well thought out story and is worth watching.
