maybe saying that it is a joke is a little harsh but for me it is/feels like it, above said is more or less the short out-coming of what we've tested, tbh it was primary tested to run in a company environment here is all pros/cons we worked out:
Cons:
Metro Apps cant be closed (system closes them itself when cpu/ram power is requested) -> Maybe fixed at least it was like this in rtm / beta released on MS developer Network
close to impossible to get into the extended start options due to the fast boot (you got something like 20ms, on a fast system, to push F8)
Dual Boot Systems take much longer to boot cause win 8 shuts down first after choosing Linux, Win7, etc.
additional look screen like on mobile phones (even if you let it prompt for credentials)
Standard Metro apps have a habit of crashing (probably due to not being able to close them)
the big adverted feature of running xbox apps isn't working too well
most pre win8 programs apps aren't support even if they may run (if you got troubles don't expect support by manufacturer)
Skype hardly works (importing contacts wasn't possible even after working on it for approx 2 hrs) and skype get's developed by MS
shutdown and log off got separated, to shut down/restart you need to log off first in metro / In desktop mod you need to hover over start button and click settings to shut down/restart
displaying metro apps side by side only works on resolutions greater than 1366 X 768 -> can be changed through reg
only runs as VM in VirtualBox and VMware Workstation 8, at least it used to in RTM/developer preview
Mandatory support tools like BGinfo, obviously don't work on metro (even though this is not so much of interested as private user)
desktop can only be opened as a metro app, come on lets be honest they could at least gave us a option to allow a direct boot into desktop (seems to be possible by now by some 3rd party tools)
so far personalizing metro isn't possible but should be available in "near" future
no visible difference between desktop and RT versions
from February on you need to pay approx 10$ to use the media center (play DVDs)
different ribbon designs for different programs
several things are only doable by gestures in metro which are not very logical sometimes
a lot of steps are needed to link Win8 with a Microsoft account (former live-id)
the Explorer and Ribbon menu doesn't work well, usability is pretty bad in my opinion
searching only category based possible not overall
charmbar (on the right side of the screen) and context menu (bottom of the screen) feels wired especially since some options which previously where all included in the context menu spread into these two
Server 2008R2 GPOs arent always working, having apparently trouble with metro
PROS:
better multi screen support (task bar exceeds over all screens)
native USB 3.0 support
better task manager
IE10 way better
faster installation (still a questionnaire on support of answer files and installations made by preboot environments via MDT/AIK)
Stock system contains antivirus, even though it's only the security essentials
it's cheap upgrades for 15$ new versions for under 50$
metro apps are faster then desktop apps and running in a sleep mod if not used, good if they are working which currently isn't always
copy algorithm got changed and is way better/faster now
installing windows to external drives and use it everywhere
easy to use on a tablet (couldn't test this very extensive, only got a tablet for 10 minutes at venue of one of our IT dealers, but there it worked pretty good should be a great presentation and educational tool)
doesn't need as much power as windows 7 (pretty logical as the desktop system is more or less adopted to arm)
Sync between different PCs with a MS account works pretty good (Active Directory feature brought into the consumer user world), looks a lot like OSX
Factory reset option (basically formatting)
system refresh option (reset of all system components)
Secure start with UEFI
Most programs should work even without win 8 support
Stock/Win Update driver database
so there is a lot of pros and cons, and for me currently the cons are over-weighting the pros. On a side note i am pretty sure that in most enterprise environments Win8 wont be used at all, due to the fact that there are so many changes which probably most of the users in a company will driven crazy by all theses changes, whoever worked IT support in a company probably knows why.
