I agree with you about merdilla, it's a really good map and needs to get in the regular league rotation, who the fuck likes saints?

I like your ninja cap and the classic tk-a-teammate-to-grab-the-last-flag-to-brag-about-it-later from 3sided :D

Am I the only one that thinks DoD is the best game ever made in the history of man?

The game itself has a few non-perfections. But it's still better than any console shooter, and STILL the best WWII shooter ever made.

I think what makes it the MOST fun, is the community and how it's upheld. When you join a team, and you're in TPG, that alone is fun. You ride thru the good times and bad, you watch faggots get banned, with 1911 it gives us all a place to meet up and talk shit. You can jump in xm and 12man with others, make some friends...laugh at idiot ragers...Watch people cheat and get away with it and be like "but why?"....

Bottom line, the game is alright, but TPG is fun. It's a great community, and even those ppl you hate, you love to hate them. Anyone who says DoD is a dead game, is just a negative asshole. This game is not dead, it never will BE dead. Why would you even want to imply that it is? DoD and TPG is the most fun you can have playing any video game, period. And it's thanks to all the people who have been here over the years. I fuckin' LOVE DoD. When I was in TPG mode, I quit my job, sold my PS3, broke it off with some skank, and went as hard as I possibly could, and everyday that I'm stuck in this place called reality, I can't help but think how much I loved every minute i got to be 100% involved.

Day of Defeat and TPG is the only thing in the world that makes me wish I could lose everything so I could just blaze weed, and rock TPG 24/7....Maybe one day :D

Nah, recoil is good. I like DoD's recoil implementation better than any other game, it's a great way to subtly balance weapons by forcing you to play with higher sensitivity and be less accurate at aiming long distance without using RNG cone of fire... of course they decided to use RNG cone of fire too which is completely unnecessary if they just balanced the damage and recoil correctly, but I guess it makes it easier for newbs to get frags. You can balance the recoil and give a recoil penalty to moving and still have random recoil, but the core concept of your shot hitting where your crosshair is located is my point.

As for being able to run around a corner and kill people, it's really not as good as you say unless you're better than the people you're playing against. The only reason it's even a 50/50 proposition is because of the bob bug that manages to "balance" the game in the aggressive/defensive sense by making it impossible to hold corners against a rifle who can peek to their left and impossible to peek corners when you have to move to your right.

I disagree, I loved quake and UT as much as anybody but I quite like the movement penalties on the rifle and heavy... learning how to counter-strafe to stop yourself is a fun mechanic. It opens up a whole new skill ceiling right away at the public server level, and on the highest level regarding movement around the map and positioning. You can still pop out and kill a camper faster than they can react, and 9/10 a skilled aggressive team can beat a skilled campy team. Breaking through bunch of camping idiots and fullcapping is pretty rewarding. Also quake-like weapons implies no recoil for heavies, and recoil control is another thing that makes dod quite unique.

People jumping around with railgun-like accuracy while moving would eliminate a lot of the tactics and teamplay, and some of the excitement imo. Though removing proning definitely would make dod better.

Pretty much this. I fell in love with the game back in the early betas and they kept adding good stuff into the game while taking out some of the other good stuff. Like, with 2.0 they made the guns inaccurate while running, but made them more accurate while standing still. Having played cs, I was already familiar with strafe-shooting and thought it was natural. Eventually by retail 1.3, most of the good players had run the course of being a newb, playing a ton, getting good, playing competitively, enjoying being good enough to wreck people in pubs/scrims, and getting bored and quitting. The CPL tournaments actually dragged a whole new group of people into the game, without that group of people I think there's a pretty high probability that the game/community would have died out around 2005/2006.

My thoughts exactly. Even with the dumb bullet spread, it is still faster than CS, yet requires a good amount of teamwork as well as individual skill. As far as major gameplay mechanics, this was always my biggest complaint about DoD. I am perfectly fine with the movement penalty and stronger/weaker weapons and such, but the built-in, inherent, and just plain unnecessary inaccuracy is bad and, consequently, one of the reasons I greatly dislike most modern FPSs (on top of iron sights...I fucking hate iron sights).

Hilde, it took me forever, but I did manage a 105m no scope on dod_peach before the HAT server had its ban wave. The people you encounter is what makes this game fun for me. It's simplicity also makes it a timeless FPS. As long as there are real people playing this shitty old game, expect me to find that one pub that has those people in it!

Re: Serious Question

by JaGGoNdd » Tue Feb 19, 2013 11:47 am

most fun FPS game there's been in quite a while IMO. Like An1PauL said all the little aspects of the way the game is played are just right for most of us. The pace of the game, the way players have developed and improved so now the aesthetics of how people play the game have improved, etc etc it's always just such a nice rush to try and hold the last flag in a playoff final match or when you get to a spot where you know you have a shot to take down 5 dudes with a BAR or KAR. There's just the right mix of gayness and pushing forward nowadays. so verdict being, yeah its absolutely fuckin fun! and it probably will be until the day the last person plays the game. When you consider all the other circumstances surrounding the community (immaturity, rampant cheating, shit talking, totally inappropriate stuff sometimes when you think about it lmao) along with the things that have happened to the game over the years (i.e. losing leagues, losing sponsors etc) the ONLY explanation for the fact that we have four good sized divisions right now AND a european division that is a whole lot of fun to be a part of....the only explanation would be..... that this game must be pretty god damn fun :D

this!

i still enjoy pulling off insane noscopes against people and yelling it in ventrilo only to hear people say, "wow, you noscoped someone."

YA I FUCKING DID, IT WAS FUCKING SWEET.

i enjoy the rush your heart gets when you get a 4th or 5th kill and you are rushing to the last flag, trying to dodge bullets, to prone cap out.

i enjoy hanging out in ventrilo talking about everyday life with friends from dod.

In the end, these people I play against are friends without faces. I have already put in the hours in order to become a top dod player at this stage in the game and to just sit down and frag is still enjoyable. No need to learn another game when this one is still fun.

dod is still totally enjoyable for me. I just love the movement mechanics of dod and the gun accuracy (hate ironsights), the sound, the models and maps, fast respawning, high skill ceiling... its just a great game that I'll never get bored of. a lot of my enjoyment is probably nostalgic, harking back to the immersion of being a young noob on dod_oslo etc. dod 1.3 would be absolutely perfect with better (especially crouching) hitboxes and a much better netcode (seems to be a big difference between where models are on your screen and where the server thinks they are), but we can't complain since this game is fucking old and it's pretty badass that a community exists.

like others said, comprehensive lack of any other fun FPS games is a factor... cod/bf series are just fucking dire, CS:GO just feels wrong and is not fun, nothing else even worth mentioning. devs need to learn that realism != fun (but sadly it seems to = profit). I've played other genres semi-seriously, sc2 and racing, but nothing comes close to FPS for enjoyment, such a shame the genre is dying!

Re: Serious Question

by akiro » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:49 am

The lack of other good fps games is what brought me back, everything else just blows or incorporates pay to win shit(tribes ascend). Alot of what sears said i remember as well( not admin shit obviously) and i enjoyed it alot. From 1.3b when STA was the first league and playing vs kis,45th,eA, qor, 101st, cow, sac. I always looked forward to matches, and even when cal was "the" league and hb,nt,ve,nude ( not to mention all the variations that came from them)...... I mean i could literally list all the teams and players that i remembering making the game "fun". What i find fun now is being able to play with a bunch of the guys i got close with over the years. It's weird to say those teams and players made shit fun but to me having legit competition between more then 2 teams per division was just awesome. The game may have never been perfect and the community was full of shitstains but i truly enjoyed making a team and seeing how far we could go, as well as actually being able to find new players.

Dod for me is still just riding on the nostalgia i have te times i played between 01-07, and while i enjoy playing with the guys i know, if they stopped i'd be done in a flash.

this is probably the main reason y people play this game still. i tried the cod gaming, halo series, anything fps i tried and nothing can create competition like the HL mods have done. I also think CAL left its mark on anyone who participated in it because its a lasting memory that TPG recreates for us on a small scale but still enough to satisfy our souls. id like to think if CAL was still around CS/DOD would still have some firepower in the gaming world.

Re: Serious Question

The only reason I still play this game is because of the DING! of the M1 Garand. Love that sound. And everyone in Krud's Basement Crew is freaking awesome. Woot!

Re: Serious Question

by IEatNegRep » Tue Feb 19, 2013 7:48 am

-The league is fun
- It's even fun to annoy the shit outta the dicks in TPG
- The community has brought me good friends, and better enemies :D
- It's nice to jump on vent and throw down with people not necessarily from your state, country, or in some instances, not even from this continent. Although anyone with even the slightest accent got cussed out by the more "candid" ppl in TPG. ignorant fags
- As Snoop Dogg once said, "There's so much drama in the TPG" but it's always made for a large amount of interest, either positive or voice_negative.
- Wasn't alot of FUN....to make it all the way to the finals, only to have you and your team of loser-bait queers, back out with your tails between your legs, but...it IS still fun to laugh about that now, so it's give and take.

but yes, yes it is...and for anyone who doesn't think it's fun anymore, its only because they MADE it no fun for themselves. i cant even play TPG this season but it's even fun just to watch the madness ensue until my eventual return. I'll have to use a new name and i.p most likely, JUST to receive fair treatment but it's not like it's hard. Kinda sad considering I never in my entire career in TPG ever broke even one rule (fact) but...haha whatever gg's kids I cant wait

Yeah, especially if you cheat. If you don't, well, things will end up a little harder and no one will do movies of your shitty self, or be your e-friend unless you provide things they want, etc. As long as you are surrounded by people you feel comfortable with talking not only about priming a nade over the rooftops of lennon but any other nonsense you'd like to talk or game you'd like to play together, DoD can still be fun.

tl;dr DoD have always been a social game rather than an ordinary WWII fps

Re: Serious Question

by Sears » Tue Feb 19, 2013 5:09 am

Sometimes I think about the thousands of hours of my life in high school that I lost prone barring people in the back from the mound on dod_caen or sniping people from all the glitch spots on dod_hill and dod_valley, and then the thousands of hours of my life in college that I lost going negative in scrims or winning tpg2 championships without a mouse and having epic nerd battles with Voldemort when I was a CAL admin and telling liah got raped stories on the ventrillos, and then the thousands or hours I've lost in the last two years hacking together this stupid site for the last 300 nerds that are still playing a 13 year old game in 2013...

And I'm like wtf...?

But to be honest, I think that's whats so fucking strange about this community. The game is terrible and broken, and it's ALWAYS been some form of terrible and broken. And the community is full of idiots and has always been some form of full of idiots.

It makes absolutely no sense and I have the hardest time explaining it at all to people IRL.

But yeah dude, I'd totally still be up for pubbing some caen or proning/cheating in scrims for like 6 hours straight, still fun.
