Although I don't rent or buy used games, and my xbox is always connected to the internet, it's still pretty fucking stupid what Microsoft is doing. Up to this point, my PS3 has pretty much just been a blu-ray player with a few exclusive games being played on it. But, I might be leaning more towards the PS4 for the next gen.
It honestly really depends on what other people purchase. I have 80 xbox friends, and 10 PS3 friends.... Pretty obvious what console I'm going to purchase a multiplayer game that is released on both consoles. Either way, I pre-ordered both on Amazon since I can cancel them anytime leading up to release, and they don't charge you until they ship.
Also, Sony is requiring that you purchase PS+ ($50 a year) to be able to play PS4 games online. Not surprising seeing how much Microsoft makes off of Xbox Live. But it is funny when Microsoft did this, everyone freaked out and said Microsoft was evil, yet when Sony does it, no one seems to care.
