In all honesty Tenks, you just made shit too complicated for him....
He actually asked about a chip he heard coming out soon in July. So I posted a chart showing what said chip was and why it was better. I guess charts with numbers and comparisons totally complicated things, my bad. I gave him a list of CPU options and told him what motherboard it could plug into. Once you get a motherboard and CPU, its really not hard to finish a build from there. IN the future I will stick with topics such as TIM quality, like you did. Because you know, that's totally relevant to his computer build.
When someone wants to know the difference between the two, sure I will tell them about the TIM quality, as that is a primary aspect of the differences, among a minor boost in clock speed. The point of that was to let them know that a few dollars between the chips shouldn't sway his decision. Relevance +1.

All I gave him was a simple build, some ways to cut costs, and where to potentially buy his products. In doing so, he was happy with what I did for him. What you said to him, made him wait for my response due to the suggestion from others. I can tell you are offended that others suggested to wait for me, hence your "Defrag shmefrag." comment.

If you want to keep crying like a little girly man, go for it. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Always happy to help those appreciative of it.

In all honesty Tenks, you just made shit too complicated for him. He was just looking for a recommendation on a solid build for his budget, not lessons on the history of motherboard chipsets and cpu naming. While people who are into computers, such as you and I, might find stuff like that interesting, it really means jack in this situation.

Sure, I suggested an i5 just like you said 10 posts ago, but what about the rest of the build? Is he just supposed to go to Newegg.com, close his eyes, point his cursor to a random spot, and hope to get lucky?

Rather than getting angry over nothing because you feel you are unappreciated on the interwebs, try to figure out how you could be more helpful to someone in need of advice on the subject, should you choose to offer it again, of course.
If he is going to be spending a significant amount of money building a custom PC, he should probably learn more than just "random dude recommends this part over the internet." There is an extreme amount of fanboyism / circlejerking that occurs when it comes to Intel vs AMD, Nvidia vs AMD, online retailer vs brick-and-mortar, etc. If the guy has tons of money to burn regardless of the outcome, good on him. But for most people, it pays to know what the hell they are dropping 500+ dollars on ahead of time.

Ok here we go.

As always, I tend to promote Microcenter. If you have a Microcenter near you:

http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/ ... ndles.aspx

If not, than Amazon, Newegg, or whatever floats your boat.

Based on your needs, an i5 should be fine, which allows you to free up a few extra bucks for a beefy gpu. Should an i7 be your fancy, so be it.

As far as differences between the new haswell refresh and the older 4th gen, the differences mostly lie within Intel's IHS and their choice of thermal paste. It is supposed to help lower overall temps, although most tests show only marginal differences. Take it with a grain of salt and don't let it sway your decisions as at the end of the day, you are the one who should be satisfied with your build.

I went ahead and did a quick build for you:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ghgyqs

It is a bit over your current budget, but this is using the parts and brands I would personally recommend and give you a bit of headroom for the future.

Ways to drop down the price would be:

Cheaper case (although the Phanteks case I put in there is awesome and I personally know the owners of Phanteks, I love everything their design team has been putting out this year, also a big fan of Fractal Design cases and the new NZXT H440)

Different video card (I used a GTX770 4GB, you could get a 2GB instead which saves $60, or even a GTX760 depending on your needs)

Different power supply (I chose a fully modular one for a clean build so you don't have a bunch of unnecessary wires and can show off your build)

Slower RAM (I went with 2133mhz, you can get 1866mhz or even 1600mhz if there is where you would like to save)

I'd also like to note a potential CPU cooler clearance issue with the CPU cooler I chose. Possibly going with a low-profile set of ram, a cheaper 212 EVO CPU cooler which is a single tower, or looking towards a simple AIO liquid cpu cooler. Depends what you are looking for in terms of noise, cooling performance, looks, ect...

Also keep in mind, if you swing down to Microcenter, you can save a good chunk there as their CPUs are way cheaper than online, plus they offer an additional $30-50 off if you bundle a mobo as well.

the k version means you have functions unlocked to overlock the cpu, if you dont wanna do this anyway i would go with a xeon E3 v3 processor, cheaper as the i5 but they have mostly hyper threading and in my experience are better on application basis then the i5 and most i7 (currently we are switching all desktops to xeons at work).

http://ark.intel.com/compare/80910,80909,80916,80917

they run on the same mainboards as i5/i7 (Socket 1150) and the they just got a refresh, also they are by design designated 24/7 hardware so they probably run a lot better in the longterm, you just need to check if you want the ones with integrated graphics though i wouldnt get the 1226 due to none HT.

thank you for repeating everything I already said. also way to recommend a xeon to someone wanting a basic mainstream system. thumbs up. Que "whats a xeon"
well sorry didnt read the whole topic... still a xeon would be a viable alternative due to it's the same price for more bang especially if you dont need the integrated graphics anyways. That it aint mainstream and reserved for professional workstation / server use by intels definition really is no reason to not use it, as it works just like any i5, i7 mainstream processor build and software wise.

In my intail response the i5 I was talking about was 4690k. The one you linked from neweg is just i5 4690, which is why I called it "non-k".

The k means the chip is "unlocked" - which means you can freely change the multiplier of the CPU to overclock it. It's free performance. Even if you've never overclocked or don't plan to, which a push of a button you can get more mhz.

It's up to you, the price difference on the cpu is $25. Motherboard cost difference between H and Z are $30-80.

Ok, after this post you're on your own :)

Edit: btw you're welcome ooohbee, thanks for the rep, oh wait.

The i5 you linked is the non-k version, which isn't the same chip I was talking about. But yea same thing basically just not unlocked. MSI is a good brand. I prefer asus but they tend to be more expensive. Asrock is really good too.

Since you're getting a non-k cpu getting a z97 is pretty much pointless...Look at the h97 then, save you $40-$60

Intel just released a refresh to their current line of CPUs, aka Haswell refresh. The last 2 chips in the series that haven't been released are called "devil's canyon" the i5 4690k and i7 4790k. Those are the chips that are coming out in late June early July that you speak of. Both were designed for overclockers and gaming. They put in extra crap that will go over most of your heads, so it can handle more volts and in turn more mhz/heat etc.

Image

The i7 4790k specifically is pretty nuts. First RETAIL Intel chip to ship at 4.0 ghz default. It turbo's to 4.4ghz on all 4 cores and easily overclocks to 5ghz on air. ALthough traditionally the i5 K model has been the most popular because of price and the i5 4690k @ $242 is a beast.

They are replacing the most popular chips from the last few generations (i5 3570k, i7 3770k) which is why I mention those specifically. There are more chips in that range below that are already out.

Also the newest chipset (what motherboards are based on) was just released to accompany it, the 9 series. The "z97" chipset specifically is the first to come with Sata Express/m.2 which 2x-3x the throughput of current SSDs. If you thought SSDs were fast now, just wait. So right now is a great time to buy motherboards and CPUs. They're keeping competitive with last generation prices and there is a ton of competing brands and models out (motherboards).

You can get the i5 4690k and a new montherboard for around $400-$500. Then you're have a good $500-$700 to spend on the rest of your system.

ohhhhbeeee wrote:I've never overclocked anything, but the new cpus are about $15 cheaper than the older ones and have free shipping. Is the difference between an i7 and i5 worth $100? A motherboard that says z97 would mean it's one of the newer ones you're talking about and will work with these new cpus right?
the new cpu's will work on any "9 series motherboard" z97 being the high end. There is an h97 as well, which is the 'mainstream' chipset. The only difference between z97 and h97 is that the Z has overclocking features and more PCI-Express lanes. The price difference between Z and H might not be that much difference, so look into both regardless if you don't overclock. z97 ends up being the more popular chipset and in turn having more products and options to choose from.

The $100 difference for the i7 gives you HT (hyper threading), which means your 4 cores shows up as 8 threads. the i5 is just 4 cores with no HT. And the i7 is about 700-1000mhz faster. Just depends on your goals and usage but like I said i5 will probably be the model of choice because of price/performance.

The new cpus will work with older 8 series boards with a bios update but if you're going to buy a new cpu might as well buy the new chipset as well.

Also DDR4 is dropping in august/september so right now is a great time to build a new system as DDR3 prices are going to be spiraling more than they have. I would look into at least getting 16gb, its so cheap.

I've never overclocked anything, but the new cpus are about $15 cheaper than the older ones and have free shipping. Is the difference between an i7 and i5 worth $100? A motherboard that says z97 would mean it's one of the newer ones you're talking about and will work with these new cpus right?

Defrag shmefrag.

Look for the free shipping parts on newegg/other sites. That's what I did when I recently built my computer. I spent $900 on a really good computer. If you cut out shipping costs on every part, you're going to save a lot of money. As for specific parts, you can just keep cross checking different sites looking for sales. Just put in a little extra time shopping and you'll save a good deal of money.

You probably wont even spend $1000 if you do it right unless you're looking for top end. Like showtime said, the newegg deals/bundles are great if you need both parts. A few things to remember off the top of my head...

- make sure(which all new ones should now) the gcard will run directx11 or newer games wont play.
- cases are stupid cheap, some look fancy but for 30 bucks you can get plenty of fans/air vents/proper storage and easy opening.
- do you need a bluray/cd player?
- double check all the watts on the parts so that your power supply can easily handle it
- invest in a proper cpu fan like coolermaster, not too expensive but world's of difference. (also some are tall, make sure it fits in the case)
- and of course, that your parts match up, proper ram voltage and motherboard/cpu...blah blah blah.

im sure between all us here at 1911 you'll be just fine. ill look at some parts if i get more free time.

I put most of mine together using the combo deals from newegg. You can usually get all the hardware needed in a bundle and save an extra 100 bucks. I found some decent builds for just under 1k.

Want new computer

by ohhhhbeeee » Wed Jun 18, 2014 7:58 pm

Not looking for anything too crazy, maybe around $1000 to $1200. I heard something of new intel processors coming out sometime July Should I wait till then? Would that maybe drop the prices for an i7? I can put a computer together pretty easily, but buying the rights parts is something I dunno very much about. I don't really play any new games, but every once in a while I like to play a newer single player game that I would like to not look like or run like ass.

I'm definitely looking to get an SSD. I'm not much of a music/movie whore so I honestly don't use much space at all on my hard drive so I dun need anything massive. Right now, I'm only using 80 gigs of hard drive space lol. Also, I don't need some super neat looking case, just something that will get the job done at a good price.

So if anyone can throw me up some builds, or maybe tell me if I should wait for these new processor I would greatly appreciate it. Or if anyone notices some good deals for parts please let me know.

Plz halp me!

Here are sexy korean girls to help you in the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDBvyHiQjuY

edit

Dun need bluray, but do need a cd/dvd drive that can also burn.
