New computer build issues.

I purchased everything I need for a new desktop yesterday and started to put it all together. I went to boot it up and got no POST. No beeps at all, no video coming from the monitor.

Anyone have an idea what could be wrong? it's been years since I've put a computer together, but I'm pretty sure i did everything right. Everything is new, I really have no idea what it could be.

Could it be a faulty motherboard?

First of all, what hardware do you have?

Have you remember to put in all cables ? 4/8pin CPU power , 24pin motherboard, 6/8pin GPU and for the HDD?
The VGA/DP/DVI/HDMI cable to the GPU . Also if you got 2 DVI on the gpu, try the other one.. On my 6850 only one worked with the VGA- DVI adapter(have HDMI now).

As for those things that are supposed to go in the motherboard tray, I have no idea what those are. Pretty sure I didn't get any with the motherboard.

Those things comes with the case. If you don´t use them the moderboard will problaby be card concluded. But sometimes you can be lucky and nothing happends (Except the computer won´t start). Look if you got them between the case and the motherboard.

Checklist Before Closing Up the Computer

Before you go to the trouble of putting the case back together, you should check through this list to make sure you got everything. (Note that depending on your config you might need to plug in extra items… remember to read the manual)

Did you plug in the power cables to the motherboard? There’s usually a 24-pin connector and a 4-pin one.
Did you add the CPU with the fan… and did you plug in the fan power cable?
Did you plug in the memory (RAM) securely?
Did you plug in power cables to each of the drives (hard disk and DVD). What about the SATA cables?
Did you remember to put four screws in each of the hard drives or DVD drives?
Did you remember to screw in the motherboard?
Did you plug in all the wires coming from the case into the motherboard?
Are any cables dangling that might get caught in a fan?

Reference manual for anyone looking to help.

Take a photo of your configuration if you really want help.
Ditch your GPU and use the integrated video until you get it to post. Reseat your RAM, and make sure that you put sticks in the slots of the same color (not next to each other). Quadruple check that you have every power connector plugged in for the motherboard.

you need to have something between the motherboard and the case. Generally you have those lifter/risers pictured. If your motherboard is just laying on your case, that may be your issue.

Also, you said 8gigs kingston ddr3, how many sticks? 1 8gb stick? 2x4gb sticks? 4x2gb? what is the speed on them?

Yeah I took the risers out of my old computer and put them in the new case. I think the problem was coming from the new power supply that I put in. one of the plugs didn't seem to fit too well, so i swapped it out with an old one I had sitting around and i'm getting a solid post now.

My new issue is trying to get the damn computer to boot from disk. I have selected it in the BIOS, but every time I start it up I get

"Loading Operating System..."

After a few seconds it reads: "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

Well, obviously I have the system disk in, and I set it to boot from CDROM, yet I get this message every time.

EDIT:

I'm thinking the HD is going bad, or possibly the disk drive, both were pulled from an old computer.
Going to try a different hard drive real quick.

EDITEDIT: Put in a brand new 1.5tb sata HD, still getting the same error.

Any ideas?

Is it a legit Windows CD or at least a CD you've used to boot from before?

Yeah official copy. Straight from the microsoft company store I've even used it before and it installed perfectly.

Been browsing toms hardware and I've been seeing a lot of these results. Mainly from people who had their HD crash on a prebuilt computer and the bios forced it to boot from disk.

This is leading me to believe that I have something hooked up wrong, or a wire missing somewhere. I have no idea, to be honest.

I read one thread where a guy replaced the battery in his motherboard and that fixed it...

Probably referring to the battery that maintains the BIOS (CMOS battery). You shouldn't need to do that with a new motherboard, however. You can either pull the battery out and put it back in to reset it, or just hit the reset button (follow your motherboard manual for instructions on how to do so). This is generally recommended anyway when building new PCs / troubleshooting / installing new hardware or BIOS updates.

EDIT: It is possible the battery could be dead, which would cause you setting the BIOS to boot from CDROM to be reset whenever the computer is restarted. All BIOS settings would be reset to default if the battery is dead / non-existent.

I just went and took out the HD and DVD drive, double checked everything and put it all back in.

Works now... don't think I did anything different, but I'm not complaining.

Probably wasn't connected properly, lol. It's fine though. When I was troubleshooting radio systems in AAVs, I would say a good 75% of the problems were fixed by just re-seating the radios in the mounts or unplugging / plugging back in cables
