I just loaded steam for probably the first time in a couple days, and I'm getting a prompt for an update. I can't cancel or deny the update, because it causes steam to close. If I try to let the update run, it gets to a certain point and fails stating my internet connection dropped.
I've never even seen a steam update window like that. Try disconnecting your computer from the internet and see if steam will start in offline mode. Maybe that will reset something?
you don't need to reformat, steam have released a fine update this time around: you can now leave messages to your offline contacts on your friend list. that's something community have been asking steam for quite a while... don't format, just let the update run and check your actvity feed to check how many messages you've actually lost due to someone suddenly going offline. i had 137
I'm guessing they were just having server issues yesterday or something, not being able to handle the updates. Hopefully any one else that gets the message today will just update and work fine.
