Who honestly cares if their is any money for the LAN. Aren't we all old enough where $100 (when we spent around $300-400 to get there) means nothing to us?
I don't understand what you're saying. If you don't care about the prize purse, then why should you care if you get stomped by a good team on LAN? Wouldn't you rather lose with people you're friends with and like playing with as opposed to randoms that by some chance you may not like? It sounds like you actually care about your chances of winning if you like this draft idea.

What I am saying is scrap the idea of a prize purse so we don't all have to spend more money to get there and make it a pug style. This way instead of having 6 teams of 6 we could possibly get 50-60 people to show and make teams there. Maybe have a whole weekend of just having pugs and hanging out. If you are trying to have a "fair well LAN" I'd think you would want more people there. Even if I was on a great team or even if I was on a team of friends I would rather go to a "fair well LAN" with more people from the community than have 6 teams of people.

I am just saying, the idea of having more people from the community sounds more fun and appealing than just having a tournament with around 6 teams.

i can guarantee you less people would show up for a 'pug' lan then they would a lan they get to make a team with their friends they used to play with all the time...prize money or not.

think about it...if this attracts old school DoD players who haven't been around for a while, do you really think a majority of them would be all for the idea of going to this lan to play with a bunch of people they have never played with before? or would they want to make a team with all of their old buddies they've played with, or haven't played with in forever, and have fun with them.

I don't think you'll ever have to worry about that. No matter how much you "play like a try hard," you'll never be good enough to be picked up by a top contender.

Playing DRUGS on LAN would be fun.

If there was going to be a big prize purse, it wouldn't come from people paying for the event, it would come from donations/sponsors.

The idea is to not be in the situation where we have to be pushing to get as many people to register/pay for the event so that it can even take place/have prizes. The idea is to spend a lot of time and energy securing funds, sponsors, and prizes ahead of time as to entice more people to attend. I see that as really the only way to get a larger chunk of past-players to want to attend such an event.

The way you go about trying to plan a small, lan-center oriented event for 5-6 teams is totally different than if you are trying to organize a large, self-hosted event.

Right now I'm toying around an idea of more of a hybrid, and trying to figure out how much it would cost us to host a non-byoc, self-hosted event, with 24 sponsored tournament computers (or just 12 even), with a small cash prize purse (in addition to other prizes).

I'm over the idea of doing a byoc. The cost goes up exponentially and people have to worry about trying to get their computers across the country, not just themselves.

If we can get to a point where we know how much an event like this would cost (24 tourney pc's, small prize purse, good location, etc), then we can move forward with raising the funds to actually make it happen.

All of that work will be done before any kind of announcement is made about an event (this could take a while).

The last thing we need is another ChiLAN situation.

i find it exceedingly hard to believe someone will be on a team without at least 1 other person they know on there team in a pug system. the people who show up for DoD LANs tend to be the people who have been playing this game for a while.

the pug system to me sounds interesting. random pool selection, no captains. that way the chances of a stacked pug team are lower, and its a virtual guarantee of fairness in regards to team formation. if you are worried about the prize pot in a DoD lan, your priorities in life are a little fucked, sorry.

honestly i see the best way for this to happen is to make it a LAN with another game. perhaps sc2 or 1.6 and DoD. if you have it in Vegas, and get a sc2/CS 1.6 LAN involved you might be able to get EG to get you some help with the sponsorship stuff. the EG house is in PHX(yes its sc2, but scoots lives in phx) and they have a lot of pull with companies in regards to sponsoring things. its not like it would be hard for them to help with a sc2 LAN that they can almost guarantee one of there players wins for a 6 hour drive. excellent PR for them, low travel costs, and most likely very limited foreign interest in a small US tournament with a small cash pot for the winner.

plus, you could get DR to possibly get involved on his end if you bring sc2 into it - if hes still doing that shit with the gaming industry.

The pug system is a no go. For this to go well, we need teams that are well organized and ready to play.

The direction we are heading:

$5,000 Cash Prize Pool. $3,000 - First Place, $1,500 - Second Place, $500 - Third Place.

The event would be capped at 16 teams.

There would be online seeding, teams will know their seeds before heading to the event.

There would be no byoc, just tournament sponsored computers.

If it is a 16 team tournament, there would be 24 tournament computers. If there are 8-12 teams, there would be 12 tournament computers.

The event would begin matches on a Friday night, continuing and all day Saturday, finishing at noon-ish on Sunday with the finals.

There would be seating for up to 100 people to view a current match via HLTV projection. HLTV would also be broadcast to the internet.

There would be swag, t-shirts, and raffle prizes in addition to the cash prizes for tournament winners.

An event like this would cost at least $15,000 to host. Most of this cost will come from donations/sponsors, with a charge of $45-50 per player. If we get more help than expected from bigger sponsors (valve/nvidia), the cost per player is likely to go down (I'm prepared to make a significant personal investment in this, but I can't cover the whole cost myself).

Sample 16 Team Schedule.

24 tournament computers, 2 matches begin every hour-ish. There is very little room for error, and teams MUST be on time.

As you can see, the logistics of hosting just 16 teams is pretty terrifying. It's near-impossible for events like this to go off without delays. I imagine both Friday and Saturday night would go much later than expected.

An 8-12 team event would be much more relaxed.

If we were to have a byoc, I know that there would be a sizable amount of the community that would be willing to bring their computers. However, the problem arises in the logistics of hosting a large network. Managing the space, power consumption, networking, and administration of more than a few computers becomes very expensive.

With just tournament computers, the logistical headache is minimized because we only have to set up a small network.

In the event that we are not able to secure tournament computers via sponsorship, we will be opening it up to the community to volunteer their own computers at the event in exchange for perks. We will be needing volunteers for just about everything (registration and scheduling, tourney admins, hltv admins, door security, etc.)

As is the nature of the community, this event will only happen if as many people as possible get involved and donate their time and resources before, during, and after the event. As planning continues, there will be numerous opportunities for everyone to get involved, and I hope that many of you choose to do so.

I anticipate that we will need to recruit at least 20 volunteers from the community for this to go smoothly. I won't be competing at the event (I will be far too busy), but if we get enough people who are willing to help out, all volunteers should also be able to compete in the tournament.

Ya this discussion doesn't sound very open minded and honestly almost greedy.

You guys are arguing an individual on first place making ~$150 after all expenses for this LAN. Sure I can understand this in a competitive game where there are multiple lans a year, sure I can see why someone would want to brag about how much cash they have won; in this game there is only one LAN every 2 years.

I think it would be much more attractive for the average player, even open players, to not have to worry about getting a team together and making sure that whole team goes. Everytime we try to have a LAN this happens; a team is made where 1 person has doubts and then everyone else on the team doesn't bother going. All I am suggesting is making this a fun weekend event where we have multiple 12 man tournaments and everyone hangs out together, everyone plays together, everyone meshes together. No one has to play in a 12 man if they don't want to so they can go hangout with their friends at the bar, club, crib, wherever the hell they want.

When there is a team structure people show up, hangout with their team, and then barely move around the event because they are too proud to meet someone new. It just seems more interesting to have everyone mesh than it does to have everyone hang with their "cliques". I would rather see two people who hate each other on a team together then watch them glare at each other across the room.

Just my two cents. Don't flame just state a formal opinion please.

I don't want to talk to anyone outside of the xmvc/koala crew, so I disagree with the pug idea.

Especially that fuckshit Sean Kalas.

Just kidding, but seriously, I would much prefer to form a team. If I'm paying money to go out and and frag DoD, I would like to play with people I know and enjoy playing with. If people aren't social and meeting new people due to online pride, then I probably don't want to interact with them anyways.

Nothing about this to me personally (and I would hope to everyone else) is about making money. 1911 is a non-profit organization and will always be so, this event (if/when it occurs) will also not be for profit.

The entire point of this event is to give both past players and current players the opportunity to compete on LAN in a way that the DoD community has never had the opportunity to do so. We want to go out with a bang.
seanality wrote:You guys are arguing an individual on first place making ~$150 after all expenses for this LAN. First of all, I'm not arguing anything. I'm just trying to use my skills, and the resources available to me to host the best event I can think of.

I have absolutely no idea how large/small the cash-prize purse may be. But I can tell you that it will be $5,000 minimum. Tere will be small prizes and swag for absolutely everyone who attends. The incentive for organizing this LAN, and what I would hope would be for attending it, would be for a last opportunity to play DoD 1.3 at the highest level on a LAN environment, as well as to celebrate the last 12 years of competitive DoD.
seanality wrote:I think it would be much more attractive for the average player, even open players, to not have to worry about getting a team together and making sure that whole team goes. This is unlike any other competitive event we have ever tried to do before. Teams would need to be well-organized and pre-paid for this event. But, it is also meant to be spectator friendly, and provide an opportunity for people to enjoy each-other outside of DoD.
seanality wrote:All I am suggesting is making this a fun weekend event where we have multiple 12 man tournaments and everyone hangs out together, everyone plays together, everyone meshes together. I totally understand where you are coming from. In a perfect world, we could throw a massive low-cost BYOC for all members of the community to come any enjoy in addition to a tournament. Unfortunately, there is just no way to fund such an event (that could cost as much as $50,000).

What we are trying to organize here, is a DoD exclusive "CPL like" event. Albiet on a much smaller scale. A last hurrah to competitive DoD. What you are talking about is more of a "meet-up" or casual lan "party", which I totally support and endorse, I just have no way of organize such an event on a large scale financially.

This is a small community, and pretty much everyone knows everyone. I would hope that even teams organize into groups of six, that we would all be able to enjoy eachother outside of that context. Are you really worried about being excluded by "cliques" at an event like this where it's all about doing what we do every week anyway, except on LAN in person in a big room?

Everyone would get some kind of name tag (like a badge with a lanyard) that they would have to have on them at all times to get in and out of the event for security reasons.

Sears, I've only skimmed through the posts but I think this should be addressed. If it has already then my bad.

If we only have tournament computers then new teams, or teams that havent played together, wouldnt really have a chance to practice or warm up with each other. I know the response will be something like, thats the team's responsibility to do before the lan, but sometimes teams get formed up until the last minute.

Anyway, I'm so in for this. I will definately throw down some of my own cash to make this work. Im having flashbacks of CPL and damn it makes me wish I could go back and hang more with people I met. It was such a rad time...fuck it was crazy then

If we move forward with this format, there will be a pre-lan online component. This won't take place until the coming weeks right before the event, once all or most of the teams have registered. This actually serves two purposes. One, it gives an opportunity for teams to play together, and two, the results of the online league can help determine seedings for the lan.

I'de consider hosting this whenever it is that we were ready. If we were going to have it this upcoming summer, we would need to secure a venue by the end of the year. Unfortunately, we aren't even close to that stage just yet.
