I tried to get into those games, but I've never known what the hell to do.

They're confusing if you're new to them.

I was quite competitive in DoTA back in 04 and 05, but that's a long time ago. So, that's like being competitive basketball in 1920 and claiming to be ready for the NBA now.

This is very true, you'd have to watch replays to get back into the game. The metagame changes every few seasons.

haha, i know what you mean. i never even knew wtf dota was before i started playing hon. luckily about 4 other friends and i started out playing hon not knowing wtf we were doing. it made the learning process a little less stressful since we weren't screaming at each other.

but yea, the learning curve is pretty steep for newcomers, but it's the funnest game i've played once i got haflway decent at it.

max and henry played a lot of dota with good players. i spent the hon beta with max coaching me so now i kind of don't suck at the game. most people have no clue what's going on until you hit the 1800ish range of TMM.

does anyone play Fifa 11 or NHL? it seems to be the only games i play on playstation 3

um i haven't touched a PC game in forever

When the DoDealers vent was still around, we used to do inhouse for DotA all the time. jdub, shotgunbill and derek, roy, netherhell, dyelife and maingoes. I was like 14-15 at the time, pretty funny they used to call me "The Feetus." I feel like I might have played with you too.

i remember playing with derek, but i played dota with dane and jazzy mostly. i might have played a game with the dd guys but i'm not sure.

Anyone know of any good simulators like SimCity or RR Tycoon that have recently come out. I think the last one I bought was Cities XL and Tropico. Cities XL was ok at best but Tropico was cool as hell. Any recommendations?

Tropico 3 looked fun but my comp is way too shitty to run it.

I just got done building my new computer about a month ago, so I've been hitting up all the games that brought my old Dell to its knees. Nowadays you have videocards with dual GPUs (aka SLI on a single, dual-slot card) so it's pretty easy to be able to play most every game. I opted for SLI'ed GTX 580s though. Works well for Metro 2033 at least (average FPS went from 38 w/ one 580 to 81 with 2 @ 1920x1080 very high quality etc). Intel also came out with the Sandybridge processors which are cheap, and the 2600k one that I use is pretty much capable of identifical performance in games vs Intel's $1000 ripoff processor. I really haven't been impressed by the multiplayer component of any recent FPS game, so that's why I've been hitting up the singleplayer ones.

I've been looking at upgrading. How much did you end up spending on the 580s... those are like 500$ a pop on newegg atm. I think SLI'd 460s are more in my price range lol

Yeah they are slightly less than 500 (like 480ish) if you go for a reference one like EVGA. 460s in SLI may work fine for game's out right now, but are going to be obsolete fairly quickly. If you do go that route, get the 2gb video memory ones, otherwise you're going to be having issues running at say 1920x1080. Hell, if I decided to go above that res with my 580s, I would probably start having issues in games like Crysis and Metro 2033. The way SLI works is although you are using two cards, each with their own video memory, the memory isn't combined. Rather, both cards are rendering the exact same frames. So 2 x 580s @ 1.5gb video memory is still going to be 1.5gb memory when it comes to loading stuff. If you go with the 460s (typically 1gb), you will be exceeding the 1gb limit in games like Crysis at 1920x1080 quite easily and having horrid FPS as a result. If two 580s is out of your price range, you can look into getting a GTX 590 (Nvidia's top card) or the 6990 (ATIs top card) which both have dual GPUs and cost around $700 (may still be out of your range lol). The 590 has 3gb ram and the 6990 has 4gb. Both perform similarly, although the ATI card tends to run kind of hot and may not fit in some PC cases. Also, down the road, you could get an additional 590/6990 and QuadSLI/Xfire them.


Z: Yeah I already beat both Mass Effect games, and I am currently working on New Vegas. My computer obliterates both games at like 100fps+ constant with every graphic option maxed lol.

yeah i'm not looking to spend that much on GPUs. I'm spending a lot of my budget for this on CPU/mobo, but generally looking for something that will play the current generation of games (extending maybe through the next year) without hitches. Things like sc2/d3... I don't plan on playing many fps games, but it would be nice to be able to pub new CoD games and that sort of thing. In a year or two I should have a bigger budget if I'm looking for a top of the line rig that can max all the new games, but right now I'm looking for parts with good performance/cost to replace my current PC (built in 2005 lol).

You'll have no problem with DirectX 9 games like CoD. They are made with the console in mind, and thus will run on even the shittiest of setups. I'm not sure about Diablo 3 though. What CPU/Mobo were you looking at?

i7-2600k w/ a z98 mobo. the mobo i priced has 6GB/s SATA so that I can upgrade to SSD in the future and supports up to 2133 RAM (going with 1333 atm for the whole performance/cost thing).

Yeah I have a OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. Shit loads like instantly. With that mobo you can get a low capacity SSD and set up SSD caching so it speeds up your most used files without having to install all your games etc on it.

yeah, the first time ron said "brb rebooting" on vent, he was back in like 5 seconds flat... holy shit SSD is amazing!

Even my single 5850 volt modded and OC'd can play most games at 1920x1080 pretty nicely with high settings (not highest) and 2x AA/AF, which higher isn't exactly needed at such a high res. This is with an old e6600 running at 3.7GHz compared to its 2.4GHz default. An i7 mildly overclocked and paired with 2 mid-range GPUs, such as the 560 Ti's (about $400 for both) will play any game smoothly for quite some time.

Like I said, not saying the low-mid range cards are bad, but you are going to have to sacrifice resolution and/or quality. Personally I don't really care about AA, but it's nice to have if you already have over 70 fps and want it to look a little nicer. I am not a huge fan of ATI, as I have had a few of their cards burn out on me (without oc'ing either). If you're going to go for the midrange Nvidia, go with EVGA. They have a StepUp program that lets you upgrade them to a better card within 90 days of the time you register them (if you decide they are too slow) Also, lifetime warranty.

I currently have a level 80 druid (hasn't been logged in for about a year+) that I will either reactivate and play or trade with someone who wants to play a druid and let me play their terrible toon.

What servers are ya'll on? Faction? Is Catacysm or whatever any good?

got my new comp together and gotta say im pretty pleased. with all settings on high i was getting 2-300 fps in dod source (lol i know but it was the fastest game i could download to see how it played) running on one gpu. once i get the PCIe power adapters (im using the 700w psu from my old setup and it only has ONE PCIe plug) for the 2nd GPU and get those babies SLId up, we should be in good shape.

i mostly play SC2 now with a little time on TF2 sprinkled in. been looking for a new game to get semi-serious with as well. how has everyone been doing?

PC gaming seems to have really taken a backseat in the multiplayer forum..... it's pretty sad.

Looking forward to D3/GW2 though, outside of that it's play a bunch of old games that you're either probably a) bored with or b) so far behind the curve it won't be a whole lot of fun for a while.

I just hope the pvp in D3/GW2 holds up, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've been playing Rift lately, but the PvP is only so-so. It's fun 1 shotting people without PvP gear though.
