My brother has a bad laptop with Windows XP, no XP disc, and it needs to be reformatted. He says it's filled with viruses.

Tell me how.

You should be able to install XP Home without a license and use for 30 days without activation. Format c:, reboot, make sure BIOS is set to boot from CD, insert XP Setup CD and walk through the XP install.

Linux ubuntu.

He's still going to need a license key though, and he lost his cd.

If he still somehow got the license key try call Microsoft and talk to them, if you're lucky they will either send you a new cd, or they will give you a download link.

Update: I think my brother is prematurely saying he has viruses, and instead just has a shitty laptop and slow laptop and attributes it to viruses. I am downloading Avira for him to scan the laptop. Is there anything else you guys suggest I download to try and salvage this thing (assuming there's anything wrong) before doing the things you guys have mentioned thus far? In terms of spyware/antivirus stuff.

Run avira scan & remove w/e it says is bad.
Then download http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/
Copy & paste log to http://www.hijackthis.de/
It'll tell wich posts aren't "good"(based on users experience).

If it's still not better download http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and update it then reboot in safe mode (should be f8) and run malwarebytes and remove w/e it finds.

If still not better the reformat xp and if that still wont help some part of the hardware is dying(problably).

And question: he gets this stupid "Windows Security Center" thing that pops up on his desktop and shuts down his internet browser, does a 30-second scan, and claims to have found 80 fucking viruses. It looks like complete bullshit though, considering I run Avira for a full system drive (takes over an hour) and it finds jackshit.

The hell is that nonsense? On the task manager it comes up as ubl.exe or something. Ring a bell by chance?

That's most likely a malware. Hijackthis could be able to fix it. If not use malwarebytes.
To get rid of malwares usually requires a reformat though. But if you're lucky hijackthis or malwarebytes can fix it.

Next fun challenge: won't boot up in safe mode. I've seen sites say to hit f8, f10, or the delete key while the computer is starting up. None of it allows me to reach the menu that enables safe mode. And every time I try to click the .exe from that site you gave, Linus, the spyware shit intercepts it and stops it from happening.

Turn the computer off by unplugging the charger and battery, put in battery and the charger. Turn on the computer, now it should give you an option to start in safe mode.

That's ALL i can think off. Really the only thing else you can do it reformat.

Booted in safe mode, reverted to earlier point, was able to install MalwareBytes’s Anti-Malware, running it now.

Good, run the malwarebytes IN safe mod and update and scan and clean. Then if it isen't fixed the only option left is too reformat.

Yeah run a scan in safe mode and clean w/e it says is wrong. Because in safe mode the virus cant "avoid" the scan.

It's always a good idea to run scans from safemode. Some of the newer rootkits that are floating around will prevent you from scanning in safemode. If you have trouble scanning in safemode, download this:

Ran Avira and Malewarebytes Anti-Malware while in safe mode and found some groce shit. Deleted it, hopefully that'll be the end of it :\

If it sill ends up acting weird, the people at GeeksToGo.com have free malware removal help. They helped me save my old laptop from the brink. I had pretty much resigned myself to reformatting the thing, but they helped me fix it without doing that. The programs that folks have recommended in this thread are all good, but I had to go in and delete a few files and registry entries manually to get rid of everything. Probably not a bad thing to have one of the G2G guys look over your hijackthis/MBAM/etc logs. Also, I wouldn't run Combofix without "adult" supervision- it's pretty heavy duty and could donkey up your system.

www.whatthetech.com also has free support in the removal of spyware/viruses. Similar to what Mitz suggested, they also have some self help forums with step by step instructions that I've used before.

I'll keep this in mind if the problem comes back. It hasn't thus far, and normally it would have popped up 50x by now. So I'm hoping it's over.
