1911 Beta

I guess Sears is thinking about making his own system for hosting movies through the 1911 website.

If he does then I guess this thread is directed at him and hopefully someone can help him with the project.

If not then maybe Voldemort can at the very least improve what is already there.

This might be a little much but pick and choose, these are just the things I know I would like to see.

My Suggestions-
1. Make a search feature where someone can search for a title or tags that would be used to describe the movie.
2. Allow for anyone to upload movies and when they do-
a. Have the system unzip/unrar the movie and rename the file to something much easier to understand for the people who download them. (ie. antrax-4.rar the file inside is called movie1_final-04.wmv, which means absolutely nothing to the person who downloaded and extracted it) and have it figure out the length.
b. Allow for the user uploading to tag the movie with common and unique tags for ease of search along with a description of the movie.
c. Date stamp when the movie was uploaded.
d. Keep track of downloads and maybe have a simple rating or comment system.
3. I personally like the way dodmovies.net is in the sense that all movies are in alphabetical order on one page (like a list) but maybe allow for an option of; Show Only: "Clubs + Teams, FotW, Random Clips, Compilations, etc."
4. Maybe there is a way for an admin to go through and check off movies that they want to have uploaded to YouTube and have the system automatically do it so someone like K4b00m or anyone else that makes FotW's doesn't have to get annoyed with uploading 1 movie to multiple locations.

This is definitely nerdy as hell but it sounds like collectively between just Pat and I we have another 100 movies and clips that aren't already on the site and personally I won't have the drive to upload all of them if there isn't more well thought out organizational system to it.

In regards to this project, it has always been my intention to have a well organized movie archive as part of 1911. Dodmovies is a good start, but I'de like to have a central archive on 1911 for all of the media that the community has created over the last decade for safe keeping that is much more organized and easy to navigate.

However, there are a lot of limitations as to what we can do.

First things first, I really like the new 1911 Media Page, please check it out if you have not yet. It works great for movies that we are currently releasing, as it allows us to tag them, sort them, comment on them, search, and present them in a way that is really cool. You can view them right on the Media Page itself, or you can view them as individual posts and download the original file. But, all movies have to be posted manually by a person (in this case, me).

All new movies that we release on the site, and any other notable movies will eventually be added to the media section. It was originally my intention to have the entire archive of ALL DoD media on this page, but as I made progress on the site, I came to realize that is not at all a viable option, nor one that makes any sense for our needs.

All of your suggestions (anyone can upload, a system that unzips, searchable database, tagging, rating, commenting, etc.) require a huge amount of high-level backend programming and technology. As a result, this is simply not really viable option for our site/community right now. Edit: I'm working on a solution that includes some of this stuff, but my main priority is generating a really nice archive of content.

However, I don't at all think that's a bad thing, because I don't think that's what our community really NEEDS.

We have a great Media Page, and we are going to be adding as many notable movies, and well as all future releases to that page as we go. It's searchable, you can comment on them, view the streams, and download the originals. It's only going to get MUCH better with time.

What we need, is a simple ARCHIVE in addition to this page for all of our past media that we don't necessarily need to make a part of the Media Page itself.

So that's the way I'm going about it. The Media Page will have all of the movies that 1911 and the community are currently releasing, as well as an archive of as many other movies we can find, and we will have a separate Archive for any media in DoD history that we can find.

The challenge now is figuring out how to collect the mass amounts of data from the community. I'm in the process of setting up an ftp for people to contribute, but it might make more sense for me to fedex people an external hard drive, so that I can deliver the media directly to Dreamhost, which they have so graciously offered me to do.

I'm not sure what else to say, but if you guys ask questions, I can explain what is and isn't possible, and why.

Does anyone have a relatively complete archive of all past DoD movies? if so how large is the whole thing?

I know I have a crap-load of movies on one of my hard drives somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and hook it up tonight and let you know.

I have an external HDD with 1 GB that's full of gore pictures, can i safe keep them on your ftp? You're going to need to pay the shipping too.

In all seriousness, isen't it possible to just download the entire fucking dodmovies.net(someone with really really really really really fast internet) and then upload it/send it to dreamhost?

Or if dodmovies is hosted by whoever owns it he can just take out the HDD and mail it werever it needs to be mailed.

We have plenty of people who have all the movies (everything dodmovies has and more).

Right now I'm just trying to figure out the best way about getting it all into one place, and how to present it.

If you want to just archive it then why dont just put it on a ftp, and make an archive link in the media section that redirects you to the ftp were it justs lists it everything(the standard or normal white background with a long list of file names). Not fancy, but just to store it.

This is basically what I'm doing, just a little more fancy.
