Somehow had a discussion the other night about old maps.
I was trying to remember what donner used to be called, what anzio was like before its current incarnation and what everyones favorite map was and what everyones favorite maps are now?
I was playing RR1 the other day, very interesting.
Just random thoughts lol

Thunder. I used to hate that map, so much prone. Favourite map was always koln, but I'm prettysure nowadays it would be too damn big. I still remember crawling through the little tunnels in OGL and having Cranberry shoot me in the face. Cherbourg was always a favourite too, and STR stratting on heutau was hilarious.
Also had the way better Merderet, Ramelle.

KOLN!
I've always remembered a really fun map with a train in it (that wasn't railroad) but could never remember the name, then I hear koln being tossed around and I finally googled it. Loved that map.

Cherbourg and caen(2) were the best maps. I can remember jumping on the roof with a sniper rifle on caen in 1.3b, and proning and thinking I was awesome. I can't remember if you could still do that on caen2 in 3.1. Zafod and Heutau were the first maps I can remember with advancing spawns and that was awesome. Schwetz was awesome, can't remember what version that map was in. Overlord and dog9 were pretty sweet maps in 2.0, I can remember learning how to kar by sitting in one of the bunkers on dog9 trying to hit people more than a block and a half away. Sicily and seg3 were great fun way back when. God, every map in 1.3 I can remember thinking it was fun and totally different than the others.

Loved snowtown. I wonder what it would be like to play it in a match setting in retail. It's been at least 8 years since i've played it, but if I recall it was kind of small, would make for a fast pace game

My first online experience with DoD was on dog1 with at least like 28 players and everyone had 200 ping. It was insane and awesome.

Honestly, I really liked playing Caen2, Thunder, Koln, Heutau, and Cherborg. I would put zafod in there too if not for the awful spawn and nade bugs that rendered it useless for match play once they were discovered.
There was something about the level of strategy involved with the bigger, dynamic spawning maps that isn't a part of the game any more. For instance, on a map like Heutau, there was a TON of strategy that went into how you went about attempting to attack the middle flag on initial, and how to defend it once you got it. It could literally make or break the game in just a few tense moments.
In 3.1, on maps like Heutau, Zafod, or Cherbourg. No match was ever the same, and there was so much variability as to how the opposing team was going to come at you, and there were always incredibly tense moments when the two teams met in the middle, and either adjusted to the other teams strategy and positioning, or had to scramble to adjust to losing the big flag. You always had to be on guard, because the potential for someone to slip through and ninja the back half of the map and flank your team from behind was so high. There was just a whole other level of gameplay in beta DoD that doesn't exist anymore.
Yes, it could get annoying running the long distance from spawn to where the action was. Yes, it slowed the game down. Yes, there was far less fragging. Yes, it de-emphasized individual player skill. But, I don't think that necessarily made for a lesser game at all.
Strategy wise, the game is much simpler now. Everyone has their routes mostly based on their guns, end every team knows what to expect, and where people are going to be coming from.
I don't think you should play maps like Heutau every week, but they definitely have their place in DoD and it was always a nice mix up in the map rotation. It's sad that the community lost such a huge element of the game like it did post-retail. However understandable for mass-appeal in the esports world.
7v7 or 8v8 old school map tournament anyone?

Thunder sucks. It takes like 30 seconds to cap the middle tank.
and I always prefered rr1 to rr2. It was harder to get picked off as a heavy going across balcony with the ticket blocked off, and other miscellaneous things that I can't remember now.

I don't think that's true. There's a reason the maps slipped away and weren't played. If they offered good gameplay, that people actually enjoyed, chances are they would have stuck around. It's not like the community would deliberately take good maps out of the rotation.
What you described reminds me of sherman. Basically a slowed down nade spam fest that was too small and had no where to go. It was bad for the exact opposite reasons----very obvious that it's a lessor map.

Since you either didn't play at the time or are forgetting, I'll remind you that those maps stopped being played because they were not included in the retail release of DoD. v1.0 dumped the idea of advancing spawns and moved to a set of smaller maps than existed during the beta. No zafod, no heutau, no cherbourg, replaced with maps like flash. I guess you could say they didn't completely dump advancing spawns... but they only used them in checkpoint maps like zalec modeled after the tfc cp_ idea.

I still say we should play only beta maps next season, because why the fuck not. Change of pace, at least.
Hell, I'd do it just to have brush sandbags instead of entities again.

I didn't play dod until 2003 with v1.0 on won.
Although, if the spawns still worked for Zalec, a talented mapper could have ported them over, correct? Dod was pretty active back then.
If for some reason in 2005 if Harrington or Railroad were ruined by the dod team, I think it's fairly likely to say that someone would have stepped in and filled the void. I doubt the community would have just stopped playing entirely.
But again, like I said, I wasn't there during that transition period.

No. Beta DoD was absolutely nothing like Sherman. Like, the opposite of Sherman. Remember, beta DoD was 8v8 or at least 7v7.
ThatsRight wrote:Thunder sucks. It takes like 30 seconds to cap the middle tank.
Thunder was a great map for Beta DoD, not so much for retail.
ThatsRight wrote:I didn't play dod until 2003 with v1.0 on won.
Obviously.
ThatsRight wrote:Although, if the spawns still worked for Zalec, a talented mapper could have ported them over, correct? Dod was pretty active back then.
The maps still work, they just weren't released/designed for the game mechanics of retail DoD.
ThatsRight wrote:If for some reason in 2005 if Harrington or Railroad were ruined by the dod team, I think it's fairly likely to say that someone would have stepped in and filled the void. I doubt the community would have just stopped playing entirely.
Harrington is a custom map made by Holeman post-retail. It's named after Adrian "plex" Harrington, who was an all around nice guy and prominent beta player. Harrington exists because the DoD team DID BREAK THE GAME with retail. And the community responded by creating maps like Harrington and porting over Railroad2. The majority of the community DID STOP PLAYING ENTIRELY.
ThatsRight wrote:But again, like I said, I wasn't there during that transition period.
Then... what's your point?
