A Handy Guide to Pubs

This will be my last post(thank god I know) so I've decided to make a little guide to help you guys survive the pub servers.

It seems to me that there is quite a bit of US vs them attitude on here. There is an inherent problem when you join people that play for fun and people that play for competition. Seeing that most severs are pubs these days you guys are going to have to modify your style of play. I know your going "I'm not changing anything blah blah blah." well fine get banned from most of the pubs. So here's a list of things to do to make it more enjoyable for everyone.

1. I know most of you turn your voice off. This is a bad idea would it kill you guys to talk? When someone is friendly and good it is a whole lot different then silent and good. Just like in life first impressions are everything.

2. Which leads me into this read the server rules if they are posted before you join. Don't wait for someone to tell you it, sets a bad foot forward. Don't agree with a rule don't play on that server simple enough. I don't come into your house light up a cigar, piss on the carpet, and then put my muddy feet on the couch. It's their server follow the rules and for god sake don't argue. If you manage to offend offer a simple apology and move on.

3. If you are in a clan and XXX member was banned from the server it's most likely a good idea to take the tag off. They will already be biased before you even select a class.

4. This is one of the big ones that you guys seem to have an issue with. When you are in a server full of people that play solely for fun remember they are they for FUN. Nothing is worse then watching a server get cleared out by someone that is genuinely good. Nobody enjoys getting their ass kicked across the map and back when you do this it sucks the fun right outta the room. You continuously empty a server and I guarantee the admin will have a issue with this. There is so few people left that we work hard to create a causal and fun environment, we don't need somebody to come in and prove they can go 100 and 10. You can? Great for you !You just emptied my sever for the last time....BAN. It has nothing to do with your skills and if they are legit or not. It has every reason to do with you screwing over my server. If you are aware of it or not you need to be.

5. Following the last one the common misconception I can't turn these mad skills off. So much of DOD is just reaction and I understand that but you can give people a break. If you run your score up high grab a bazooka and have some fun, hide in dark corners and stab people in the eye, use the greasegun turd, or grab a rifle and smack people in the face. Were back to no one likes to get their ass kicked 24/7, doing this gives people a chance to get a few kills and have some fun.

6. Back to your playing with people 1/2 your skill or less when one of them does manage to kill you saying NS or something similar makes them go "YESSSSS" and feel important just for a few seconds. It makes you much for enjoyable to play with.

7. Offer advice and or explanations to people. When someone says "How did you me in the dark room?" tell them that they should tweak their monitor/game settings for better vision. Or hell sometimes they just need to be told that you watched them go into that room. Silence is a omission of guilt. When you run around a corner and pop someone in the head sometimes a simple "Holy shit that was luck" or "I saw you there before" explanation makes you more fun to game with. Were back to #1 people that talk and are generally friendly are less likely to have issues on the server.

8. This one falls under #2 but since it happens so much it deserves its own. Don't argue with any admins. Most pub severs are run by people who have full time jobs and DOD is nothing more then a stress relief. When you come on and fight you are fixin' to get banned. Feel that you've been dealt a short hand? Move on. Arguing your case isn't going to get you anywhere this isn't the supreme court.

9. Avoid coming in groups larger then 2 and 4 depending on server volume. Why 2 and 4 you ask? Simple you and your buddy are going to pick opposite teams. Skill levels balance out on teams that way you prevent your buddy from slaughtering the other team and vise versa. Stacking teams with your friends and slaughtering the other side goes back to #4 and one of the main reasons why pubs take issue with certain individuals.

10. Take a good attitude with you wherever you go. Seems simple enough but I would have to say that the NUMBER ONE reason people get banned is because they come off like some butthurt 12 year old. Most of us deal with assholes every day at work last thing we need is to catch one on our server.

There you have it boys and girls. Follow these simple steps and I guarantee that you will never have a single issue on any sever.

Sincerly,
Sharky

Ill sum this up for everyone.

Hes shitty and thinks we should play like mentally challenged 3 year olds in a ball pit. Should also enable ingame mics so we can hear 40 people talk at once about inane shit that just ruins the entire game for you.

Sharky,

You may not realize this, and I hope you do, but everyone here has been through their own history of "pubbing". Everyone starts out as one and many of us even joined a, what would be considered as, "pub" clan. Over time, some get better and some don't. This whole "toning it down" thing is not as simple as you think, especially if there are unreasonable admins. Yes, there are people whose specific goal is to empty the server - as you say. But, for the most part, for most of us, we really just want to play DoD and I'm sure you guys do, too.

DoD is second nature to most of us (and, of course, this is open to interpretation), so to speak. Once you excel at something, you're always going to be around that level, whether or not you are washed up / haven't played in awhile. I guess you can think of it as riding a bike. For everyone who knows how to ride a bike, it's easy to just pick up a bike and ride it. Even if you haven't ridden one in a long time, it wouldn't take you that long to figure it out again.

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is: stop being so crazy.

Advice to server admins:

Some people who have played the game since 2001 and actually understand the dynamics of the game and the tendancies of most pub players just means they are better and play smarter than the average player. It doesn't make them cheaters, just better. Who doesn't want to play against the best competition? It does make it more fun for a lot of people.

First impressions in a video game is DEFINITELY not the same as in real life. I hardly say anything in pubs and I like to believe that I am a very nice guy. Successful, even.

This is just stupid. What you just said is the definition of stereotyping.
If you're suggesting this, then I'm sad.

1. No one wants to listen to most of the random shit people spew over voice, let alone talk to any of them.

2. The grounds for most of our bans are because you think we're cheating considering most of us have never spoken to you until bans occur. Obviously, that's a rule. How do we avoid supposedly breaking that rule when your concept of cheating is "he's better than me--must be cheating"?

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_fallacy
"All dogs have four legs; my cat has four legs. Therefore, my cat is a dog." This made me think of you, ChriscatdogCoventry. <3

4. Pretty sure we're playing for fun, too. I'll concede that since an admin pays for the server, it's his prerogative as to how it should be managed. I don't think any of us go into a pub thinking, "oh, I need to prove to these guys (or myself) that I can do well"...

5. Sadly, we'd probably still be better than you using a bazooka, greasegun, and rifle butt, so how would that solve your problem of us supposedly clearing out servers? I'm not going to waste my time in a pub server trying to buttsmack you for 40 minutes. There's really no fun in doing what we consider to be stupid shit.

6. This would require me to interact with people. #1.

7. It's giggle-worthy that you say this, but I fail to recall any instance in which anyone in this community was afforded the opportunity to grace you with the knowledge that is being better than you. It's almost always... "Hey, you're hacking. Don't deny you're hacking. I can tell you're hacking. CAL? TPG? They're all hackers. Bye."

8. I also don't recall very many people arguing with anyone at all. You ban people without saying a word and then refuse to accept logic as your Lord and savior when they request to be unbanned on your forums. That's why we argue.

9. Isn't a group of four larger than a group of two?

10. #8. No one goes into a pub with the intention of arguing with anyone. You seem unable to grasp cause and effect. We're banned and subsequently become "butthurt 12 year olds", not the other way around. We post on the forums. You fail to see any form of reason aside from the one you've concocted and we get mad at that (... MaDaThaT?)...

Sincerely,
Your mother.

PS. Reading books for pictures doesn't help your English as well as reading books for the words does.

Serious that admin who "created" this rule, must be a retarded idiot (like you are  ). Why is it so damn inportant if the players have like 2K/D ratio (for example 40kills,20 deaths) or higher? You still ban people with a score like 30kills,20 deaths.
You and the other retarded Kentucky shit clan admins really need a life, you only want to make a ban because " oh look, I got power of the server and can ban everyone who killed me more then 3 times. I'm so awesome."

And you idiots ban everyone who posted in mogers thread on your forum(like you did to me). We know who mogers are and when manyyyyy people type that he don´t cheat. Example, 40 players who know him pretty good and says hes not cheating vs ~4 idiots who says he cheat, people who don´t know the different between cheat and skills, I guess everyone here on 1911 forums have played many pcws/12mans (if you even know what it is. Problaby not.) and I don´t think anyone whould say he´s cheating..

I can't believe that after several days of us trying to help him understand the concept of Day of Defeat, they still have trouble grasping reality.

I was banned again yesterday because they didn't like my name (NOT IN THE SERVER RULES)

They would rather play with 8 of their "clan" members by themselves than play against other players.

The reason they don't go anywhere else is because they aren't welcome anywhere else.

Oh well, they keep calling DoD a dead game, but yet they are on their server every night patrolling it like it's the fucking mexico border.

So funny story about this whole thing.

I thought to myself "what if I join their server aliased as a pub clan" I changed my name to "{CPD} dogbone_" and then entered their server. When I first joined, the first thing I said was "Good evening" everyone replied nicely back as I expected. I was killing people, capping flags, apologizing for team kills, no quickswitching and I ran up a score of 38-10. During this time, not a single, not one, {KHH} member went into spectator. In fact, while I was playing, Heidi was asking me questions about {CPD} and if the pub clan was still alive, so I just went along with it and explain that a lot of our members moved on from day of defeat. When I felt the time to leave, I said "Everyone have a good night, ill pub here again for sure" and everyone was nice and said "Hope to see you again" Few seconds went by and I joined the server again but with the name "get on my level" I didn't say a word when I joined like most of us do when we join a pub. I ran up a score of 10-0 and there were comments from some of the {KHH} members like "You can't do that", "how did you know" and ect. At the point of getting my 10th kill, three of the five current {KHH} players joined spectator and at that point I left before getting banned.

Thing about it is that, I was playing the exact same under both names but just wasn't as talkative when I re-joined the server. My understanding of what goes through their heads when they're in their server is just baffling.

oh well.

Hmm, lot of drawbacks with a repeated measures design, especially with this being strictly anecdotal. We're going to need a more solid research structure with less room for design flaws if we're going to get definitive answers here.

Yeah, for a study of this magnitude we're going to need to conduct randomized clinical trials with participants of equal skill in the server, all in the server within ~10 minutes of one another, and we must do this multiple times over the course of a couple weeks. Let's start with a variety of different variables (pub clan tag, talkative, etc.) differing between the conditions, and then we can narrow it down from there.

Condition 1: Player of low skill without a tag, non-talkative.
Condition 2: Player of a low skill with a tag, talkative.
Condition 3: Player of a high skill without a tag, non-talkative.
Condition 4: Player of a high skill with a tag, talkative.

Get to it.

When I felt the time to leave, I said "Everyone have a good night, ill pub here again for sure" and everyone was nice and said "Hope to see you again" Few seconds went by and I joined the server again but with the name "get on my level" I didn't say a word when I joined like most of us do when we joined a pub.

Get to it.
By posting the details of the trial, you have given them an altered state of mind (assuming they read it) and therefore cannot be considered official scientific results.

For Condition one, we could send defiance in.
For Condition two, we could send in Courtney.
Last two conditions could be anyone but defiance really.

If defiance and Courtney could contact me, we could get this going asap.
