Back problems...

any advice?

I seriously think its from driving to and back from work everyday (80 miles) and then sitting at work.

I've been playing soccer regularly and I've always had this pinching feeling at my lower back and something just gave up as I was running. I have no problem walking and running, its standing or picking something up that's the issue. oh and I really hate doctors, that's why I'm asking 1911 for help (I couldn't find anything specific with google)

It's probably just weak core muscles, as most people don't ever engage their lower back, especially the smaller stabilizing muscles. Sedentary work environments (or long commutes) can also exacerbate the problem. If the problem continues, you can put a lot of stress on the hardware (your spine), which can eventually lead to the "shortening" of your discs as they rub against each-other, and eventually bursts discs, which require surgery to repair, and are also incredibly painful/debilitating.

I had similar issues and had 2 discs that were shortening. I corrected it by deliberately adjusting my training regimen to have a focus on my core, and I also learned a lot of pilates and picked up yoga as well.

On a more serious note, I was having the same problems after getting out of basic and sitting in a class room for 8 hours a day for the past 10 months, then coming back to my barracks to study and browse the internet. So I was sitting a lot, and I had the same pain in my lower back, and that's with all the mandatory physical stuff we do. They had yoga and stretching classes at the gym on base, and I picked up Tae Kwon Do(helps with my job too). Then, it basically disappeared and I feel 1000 times better.

No I don't lift. I had to take a break from anything though because of work and school. Now that the semester was over and I caught up on all my work I started playing again. Second day of playing I was running backwards and rush of pain. After warming up I can play with the pain, but when I drive home I can barely get out of the car and I feel like I'm 50. I think I need to fight through it. Should I be using those hot ice pads? I'm not going to take any pain pills that's just dumb. I would like to pick up yoga, but I enjoy doing sports because of the competition and shit talking. It gets me motivated.

Fighting through it is certainly not going to help. If anything it's going to make the problem worse. Eric made a pretty good recommendation... maybe schedule an appointment with a chiropractor.

I would agree with you rambizzle if I hurt my back because of impact. Like a hard hit or a car accident. I think I simply pulled something the other day and I need to stretch it out and keep it moving. Thanks for the link you posted and eric I'm going to try and do those stretches today on the field before I par take in any pick up games.

Contrary to popular medical belief, CrossFit has proven that spinal hyperextensions (especially those involving a rebound movement) are great for you!

p.s. this seems like a great opportunity to photoshop a standing male porn star.

Are you stretching at all? I had terrible pain that made it really hard to walk and even stand. It got to the point where it would hurt to sit and if i did stand up my body was bent over to one side. The problem was my hamstrings were so tight that they were pulling on the muscles at the hip/lower back. Try stretching out your hamstrings for 10-15 min a day and see if that helps. Also, like someone mentioned try and work your core muscles by doing planks and side planks. Sit ups and crunches won't help you in this situation.

I would not go to a chiropractor if I were you. They are generally temporary fixes to long term problems.

a shitty one yes, a good chiropractor will be able to help you if its bone or joint related. if they cant, they will refer you to a specialist who can. those cheap guys who run the place out of a shitty house arent the ones you go to.

this... i've never been to a shitty chiropractor. the ones i've been to have been basically sports PTs with a DC. i've never had a sprained ankle heal as fast as when i had a chiropractor work on it (electrotherapy or whatever they call it is fucking amazing btw). they've also been very good about giving advice to lead to better spinal/back health via stretches. hamstrings are a pretty common cause of lower back pain and if you stretch your hamstrings and work on maintaining a proper posture (improved core strength does this for you) you'll solve a lot of problems that people commonly have.

Keep your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back one. Sitting on that shit all day creates a weird kink in your spine.

Bend at your back, lock your knees, and lift in a sharp, jerking motion.

I'm actually doing half of what sears posted at the start of the thread and its getting better.
I would do basic half ass stretches after playing but now I'm trying my best to actually breath and relax for about 10 mins.
Then I go to jamba juice for a protein shake :)

My whole life I grew up on playing sports, I guess since college when I pretty much stopped sports and focused on drinking it really fucked with me. I still love drinking

Sounds good. I hope you get better. Lower back pain is a pain in the ass. Just remember you keep up with the stretching, even on the days you aren't doing sports.
