Why did we stop using Rate Enforcer?

CAL and TPG used to require a server add-on called rate enforcer back in the day. Then they both stopped requiring it. I thought the reason was it simply lagged servers. Does anyone have any other insight into this server add-on and why leagues stopped using it other than "it lagged servers"? If it was simply that does anyone know why it lagged server? Did it require use of AMX Mod or use of Meta Mod or neither? Does anyone have a download link?
Some of the TPG admins and myself have been discussing a CVAR enforcer server add-on, but I don't want to get too far into developing it if we are just going to abandon it shortly after implementing it. A CVAR enforcer is probably the most frequent request I get from the community, so I figure I should at least look into it.
Also, speaking of server add-ons the TPG Roster Check server add-on is in the final phases and will be released for public beta testing soon. I would like to thank Fysiks for all of his help on developing this server add-on.

I don't know why TPG ane CAL stopped using the rate enforcer tool but from my experience running leagues down here, no matter how good is your server, by adding add-ons, amd mods or any other third party modification in your server, it insta fucks with the server registry, makes the game way choppy, eventually becaminf unplayable due to high loss/choke. Even then, we used to use a combination of the dodguard plugin + rate enforcer and though cheaters and raters disappeared/got banned over time the general experience of playing changed a lot due to how laggy the servers ended up being. Dodguard failed in having general acceptance as well because the random screenshots were stored in the users computer, making the game freeze often or even crash sometimes. In my opinion, I'd rather try focus on finding an anti cheat client that does config checks, takes snapshots and verify game files different than default. So far, the only anti cheats I found where CleanDoD, Easy Anti Cjeat (EAC) and the ESL anti cheat. The first two have minor problems on regards to inatallation in some computers/os's. The last one is the best by far but it kinda exclusive so... Or else, develop a similar tool from scratch lmao. May the raters and cheaters fucking burn and they fingers get cutted out from their hands

people also complained about the cevo anti-cheat client because it took a random ss during the game which would lag a user for a fraction of a second...
people just like having something to blame their deaths on, even when the impact is minimal.

I beg your pardon Ward but in what part of my text I disagree with a possible return of server plugins? I just informed that WHEN I used to run leagues, these plugins caused server lags. That's all. Maybe our servers where fucked and couldn't hold the necessary band/processes to run smooth. I always have tried to bring the an anti cheat tool to the discussion table and never had any problem with rates ever before (outside Jason's complaints in 12mans

) so please don't take me as someone who is trying to dodge legit plugins just because I have high ping. It's quite the opposite because although people may think, playing with high ping + legit rates doesn't give me any advantage at all.

The Cevo client made my game completely unplayable. Especially the random screenshots. On my old machine it would literally freeze for like 3 seconds when a snapshot was taken. I know others that experienced equally poor performance. I don't have any plans of writing, recommending, or playing with anything that takes random screenshots during a match.
I wouldn't mind seeing if we could make some sort of rate enforcer or cvar enforcer work though. Thanks for the link Wonderbread.

It really depends on how these snapshots are taken. If they're stored on your dod folder, while your game is running, it really can freeze your screen or even crash your DoD. However, two of the anti cheats I mentioned you stored these snapshots inside the anti cheats folder. You don't even notice when these snapshots are taken. The main thing about EAC is that it's used mostly for Counter-Strike. CleanDoD in the other hand had some issues with the installation in some PC/OS's. As soon as I see you online I'll message you about them if you would like to know more about.

I do not believe this was one of the server add-ons we used, but it looks like it does the same things that DodGuard did. If anyone wants to try this out during scrims and let me know how it affects performance I would appreciate it.
Just make sure you remove it before a match.
I see 3 main things to toy around with in the config file:
- e_ticrate "0.4" Every how many seconds it checks the cvars (I don't think it needs to be every 0.4 seconds)
- e_forceintegrity "1" Enforces file consistency with the server for models and sprites (this would poll the user's hard drive and might affect performance)
- The various e_querycvar commands define the values various cvars should be. We could try just rates and also try various other CVARs.
If anyone does try this out please post their experiences in this thread. Thanks.

I depends more on your video card and your drivers. My new computer you have no idea a snapshot was taken. My old computer it always froze for 3 seconds whether I did it manually or an anti-cheat client did it. I have talked to others that said they also had this same problems with screenshots. There isn't much you can do to prevent this from an anti-cheat client point of view, because it all depends on the machine's hardware and drivers.

I recently came across the 'freezing screen' while taking my match screenshots. I changed my video drivers to address some issues in other games I play, and that's precisely when it started. What eventually fixed it was making sure my DoD was at the same resolution as my desktop. Now, when taking match screenshots, there's no freezing at all.
Not sure if it's all related.
Edit: My PC isn't shitty either. Intel i7, gtx 660ti FTW, 12gb ddr3 1600mhz.

I take this back. defiance pointed out to me that it only checks models and sprites on startup since you can't change them mid-match without reconnecting. It is just the cvars it keeps checking.
