About half the time I try to start a HL1 game (DoD mostly), I get the following popup error, and the game won't open. The only way I have found to fix this is exiting steam and restarting it. Has anyone experienced this/know how to fix it?

have you tried verifying integrity of game files or defragmenting cache files?

has happened to me about 4 times with 3 being all the same day and once the day after. I too restarted steam and when I relaunched it it went through a "steam is updating" window (though not the normal steam update window rather a normal windows window showing an update) That happened every time but would work after about the 1-3 mins of sitting through that. Haven't had it since.

Hm, none of that has worked. Nobody else is experiencing this same issue?

delete everything in your steam folder except for steam.exe and the userdata and steamapps folders. then run steam.exe and wait 2 minutes for it to grab new steam install files.

Download Process Monitor

Run as Administrator.
The magnifying glass icon controls the capturing. The eraser 2 icons to the right clears it.
Start capturing, launch dod, stop capture... repeat until you catch it generating the error. Hit the eraser between tries. Once you catch the error, save the capture with all events in PML format, Zip and upload somewhere, link here and I'll look at it during my lunch break.

Happens to me sometimes, never happened before the GoldSrc update... sure that is the problem.

Yup, same problem. Never had an issue with it before the update. I usually just exit steam, relaunch, and verify cache and it seems to work for me.
