I think the biggest one I remember was the 1994 6.6 in Northridge (near LA, about 20-25 miles from where I was living at the time). Lots of shaking and some older buildings got damaged, but nothing major. As for half the state of California being in ruins...I wouldn't hold your breath.

Friends dad took that after it missed my hometown by 4 miles. Tornado was F-5 and on the ground for over half an hour and traveled almost 60 miles. But honestly, I'll take my chances with tornadoes over earthquakes any day. Good thing I'm moving to Cali in 2012. LoL.

And Knockout, I've been living in california for years and never experienced an earthquake, but my family here in Dallas was in a small one a few months back. Apparently the epicenter was around OK City.
