I think the biggest one I remember was the 1994 6.6 in Northridge (near LA, about 20-25 miles from where I was living at the time). Lots of shaking and some older buildings got damaged, but nothing major. As for half the state of California being in ruins...I wouldn't hold your breath.
Haha, I wasn't suggesting it would be next month.

In the scheme of things, though, I would agree earthquakes over tornadoes. Then again, living in Pennsylvania, I've never experienced either on any scale that wasn't a joke.
