I took a stab at HLAE, thanks Chris for giving me those binds they really helped. Here it is, nothing spectacular but the purpose of this video was not to display the sickest frags out there.

Whats up with the cl_fog?

And would be better to use 16:9 resolution when capturing and rendering the clips, would also remove the caparea.spr and replace it with transparent one. As you rewind demos, it will appear to your clips every damn time.

So all this movie making talk has me interesting in trying to make some stuff for the community. I have done a few things with windows live movie maker but using that i limiting me, so i'm going a different route to try and make better stuff. So I would like some feedback on the video quality of this clip.

Rendered no, but captured yes. If you rendered in 120fps it would look way too fast and videoy. Capturing at higher frame rates just allow for smoother slow-motion and cleaner speed ramping from fast to slow footage and vice versa.

this is a video I made a few years back. I shot everything at 60p, which if I rendered out at, would look really boring. I dropped into a 24p timeline and rendered the majority of the footage at 24p to get that silky smooth look (but it's still slower than real time and native 24p). Then for the times I didn't need it, I left it at the original 60p. And the other times for the super slow-mo, (unfortunately I cant afford the 6 figure cameras that shoot 120-2,000fps) so I use after effects and a few plug-ins to simulate a 1,000-2,000fps "capture" but I'm still dropping that in a 24p timeline and rendering at 24p, which is what creates the super slow mo.

i assumed 29.97/30fps is just a convention from ntsc video, not sure how that's relevant for a monitor running at 60+ hz

IRL for slow-mo I shoot everything at 60p and then render at 24p. It's an exact 40%/2.5x reduction in FPS.

I get why you guys capture at 120fps, so there is more frames to use when doing slow-mo, which causes the slow mo to be more smooth and natural.

I was just wondering how you all got to using 180/40...120 makes senses, but using 180 doesn't. All real frame rates are based on a multiple of 24..After 120fps the next step up is 240fps...

well, capture clips in dod at 120fps, then use virtualdub to convert images to AVI at the same fps (120). The extra fps is for motion blur/slo motion I believe. I'm not entirely sure what the real reason for setting the fps to 30 or 40, I remember steve saying something about it renders every 3rd frame, something like that. Maybe steve can explain more.

The demoedit command will make it so you have a few new buttons on your viewdemo bar, so do your thing exec movie config, load up your HLTV demo, when the demo is fully loaded click the new awesome button "Events" and click on one of the event lines, and click "Remove" then just hold down enter and it'll keep Removing all the lines until they're all gone, it wont ruin your demo thats just all the BS code to write text on the screen, and your HLTV will be 100% clean of ADS! you can also save the demo once you've removed the ads by clicking the Save button on the viewdemo bar so you dont have to remove them again later for that demo!

This may not make perfect sense, I'm kinda out of it and I kept backspacing random parts so bare with this hahaha.

I capture at 1280x720 using 120 or 180fps. For the project settings and the final render fps, try and set it to a divident of 3. ie captured at 180fps so the project settings and final render would be at 30fps, or captured at 120fps, project settings and final render at 40fps.

Ha, you're doing a few things wrong but nothing major. Like motive mentioned you should capture the footage at whatever resolution you plan on the output being. As far as upscaling, it shouldnt effect you too much because you're only going up 30 lines of resolution (1050->1080). I just think your workflow and settings don't align and match up properly.

Your video has a black box around it, so you're defiantly not using the right setting or at least not filling the canvas the entire way. I'm not entirely too sure how capturing video game footage works but you should capture at much, much, much higher frame rate than 30fps. Ask the regulars what settings they use.

not only are you upscaling but that's a totally different aspect ratio, 16:9 for 1080p and 16:10 for your mutant resolution

I use the resolution 1680-1050 ingame when I record, and the 1080p (60i)30fps project when I edit the clips. Then before I export the clips I go into options and change it to .avi so that I can choose what resolution I export the clip in.
But I'm doing something wrong, I'm gonna try and figure this out over the weekend when I have more time..

I don't know the ins and outs of the workflow yet, so maybe higher resolutions are needed for videogame clips...I was just basing the 720p off of what I use for work.

Also it could be blurry because you're starting off with a smaller source resolution and up-scaling?

It allows 720p but still looks like shit, I have to read more about that so the videos I make are watchable.

I know this thread title says editing but capturing the clips is where most movies go wrong.

Using shit like fraps or 30fps only, slowmotions will be awful.
Best quality in GFX settings, movie.cfg, better explosion effects, some sprites, detailtextures maybe, removal of scoreboard from demos, adverts from hltv (might take little time). Some people tend to press scoreboard 24/7 cos of old habbits or stopsound script. Then HLAE supersampling or whatevs or oldfashion startmovie 90/120/150, whatever multiple of your final render fps. And save uncompressed avi, now you have full quality smooth clips to play with.

Maybe someone will disagree on this but I think quality, "perfection" in editing is 50% of the movie. Except those with awesome frags (an1mal,shiftyp,zoanth etc).

Thanks Chris I tried doing what you said but I couldn't make it look good and I did not even know you could overlap the clips. I also use premiere PRO tenks, I went to a media highschool and that is what we used for editing and is the only program I know. I was a camera and sound tech guy though, so I'm not that good with all this editing stuff but hopefully I'll get there.

buy the keyboard covers for like $30. learning curve will flatline and you'll be a master in a few sessions..

most of the good ones are for macs tho...I wish they made more

Yeah...actually I really gotta make the switch, haha. I downloaded the adobe bundle; premier/after effects/photoshop; but i dont know how to use them, it will take some time to learn the shortcuts and where everything is.

Sony Vegas shortcut to split clips is "S". If I dont require an HLTV to show anything I just cut off small chunks of walking around to keep it interesting. For example, after your first kill, you could split the clip after you jump in the water, and then cut when you're in the doorway before you get the kill on the guy in ivy. I'm assuming you're using vegas video. What many people do is they mark the beats of the song so they can sync up kills to them. by clicking on part of the timeline where you see a beat, you can hit the "M" key on your keyboard and it will make a mark, so its easier to line up the kills. Many people also split their clips into the most exciting parts, cut out the walking around in between by rendering an hltv clip of them running from place to place. I would advise youtubing counter-strike 1.6 movie making tutorials, they have a ton of content and most things are pretty similar between cs and dod. Good luck!

How to make clean transitions and tie clips together if the kills are spread apart like the ones between bridge and z.
