I'm pretty fucking excited about the hire after we dumped Bradley for that abortion of a Gold Cup appearance.

I'm glad they went with a European manager versus another US manager like Bradley or Arena. Klinnsman had been Gulati's favored choice since 2006 but they could never hammer out a deal. I like the pick. He lives in California so won't be as inclined to jump jobs like say a Hiddink or some other national team mercenary-like manager. Hopefully he brings a more attack minded approach.

While he had a good run with Bayern Munchen the guy is trouble, he's the type to start drama with players, staff, and the board alike. We were supposed to get him instead of Bradley in 06 but he wanted more and more money, and he left BM for similar reasons. I don't see him making any improvements to the squad. If anything he's going to be detrimental to the development of football in the states. (For fucks sake he's bringing a football psychologist along with him)

Bradley did a great job improving the shotty performances of the US team. You mention the Gold Cup but that was played with an inexperienced backup squad in the first place. The South Africa WC performance was outstanding in my eyes. They played brilliant football against good sides such as England and ended up losing to Ghana (one of the better teams imho) 1-0

But lets not talk about that world cup or I'm going to start screaming about how the Dutch should have won and how shitty of a ref Howard Webb is.

So the Germans are forgetting how he revamped their youth foundation and returned them to world champion level play and was their golden boy like 6 years ago? The guy is really fucking good and knows a whole lot about the game. The Germans were blessed with another man of quality in Loew, so they forget that it was Klinsmann coaching when they came back to the scene as a top international squad.

I don't expect the Germans to say anything good about him to be quite honest. Klinnsmann was never given the heroes welcome, even after the 1990 World Cup. I like the hire, a lot.

Bradley reached his apex in WC 2010. Actually, he reached his apex the year before when we beat Spain 2-0 and got screwed out of a Confederations Cup win against Brazil. The post-South Africa US squad has been a disaster. I think Bob Bradley got his contract extension because we made it to elimination rounds, but that was on the skin of our teeth. The debate was still out there because Bradley really has not demonstrated any effective development on offense nor has he demonstrated his 'defensive genius' that he's known for. Losing 5-0 to Mexico and 4-2 in the past 2 Gold Cups is reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally bad.

You don't lose to Panama. Sorry, but that's trash. I don't care if it was group play. You don't lose to Panama, ever. Not only did we lose to Panama, but we gave up 2 goals to that shitty team. Our offense has been largely non-existent in the last 2 years.

He was with Munchen for a "year". He took them to the quarter-finals in UEFA. Germany isn't the premier league in club play. It's Spain and England by a mile, then probably Italy, then Germany. Porto has as many Champions League championships as Bayern Munich in the last 11 years. :/

a manager doesn't make the quality of his players at that level. I haven't been following clubs at all lately, so I don't know how good the BM team was that he coached... but if a manager comes in and takes his team from the basement to the top level, all that tells you is the previous guy sucked.

I don't know what the alternatives to Klinnsman would have been to be quite honest. Certainly no one domestically is that good, and I am not sure who we could have gone after internationally. I guess, technically, Martino is on the market. Maybe Maradona, but he would have had lackluster talent for his ego. It would never have worked.

He was not coaching when they returned to being a top international squad. Voller brought Germany back to the top after an abysmal few years with Ribbeck,(and before him they were a great side) and Low has been in control since 2006 and really made Germany shine again as an international squad. Germany is already doing brilliantly in the 2012 Euro qualifiers. To say 5 years is too long for anyone is silly. If you're doing well then you don't need to sack your manager.

You're right that Germany isn't big in the CL scene, but they have one consistent team, which is obviously BM. Klinsmann did well with BM, but is one of the few managers that couldn't bring a consistent team to even win the Bundesliga. Hitzfield even did a better job with BM.

I'm not saying they should have kept Bradley, I just don't see this guy doing anything special.

He was at BM for a year. It's hard to say he had "consistency' issues while he was there.

The man reinvigorated German Football and actually gave true talent a shot to play rather than pure reputation. Don't get me wrong, her irked the media. But his 2006 showing after taking the team over in 2004 and the EUFA Cup. There is a reason why Ozil and Mueller became household names, and it was because he based his selections on talent. A revolutionary concept, I know

Klinnsmann's efforts are paying dividends for Germany right now. He coached them to a World Cup final and the team that just took 3rd when losing 1-0 to the juggernaut that is Spain is a direct result of his handiwork.


I don't expect Klinnsmann to bring us a World Cup. Our best athletes in the U.S. go into football and into basketball. I do expect him to build up support for our development program.

You're right though, I do like his mindset of bringing in youth players which is something he's known for, and something that football in America really needs. The sport is actually growing and at a fast pace, so I do see some future in the US squads to come.

I was amazed to see English sides like Man City playing pre season games in the US.
Not to mention the FC Barca Man United game at FedEx field. Things like that are really going to help the popularity of the sport state side.

They won the WC, regardless of fashion, and they've pretty much dominated soccer the last 3 years. The roster is ridiculous. David Villa, Xavi, Puyol, etc. Besides, they've lost like 2 matches in almost 6 years or something ridiculous. Switzerland in group play in WC 2010 and the U.S. in Confederations Cup in 2009.

The WC is for keeps and scoring is often times tough. They didn't get to pad their goals, like Portugal and Brazil did against the DPRK
