first I'm hearing about this. but I'm excited for it! I liked cs:s. As long as they don't try and make it a CoD ripoff... I'll be happy.

We've got a lot of new details on the newly announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive thanks to a write-up from the renowned owner of eSports Entertainment Association, Craig "Torbull" Levine. Torbull was one of twenty top Counter-Strike: Source players invited by Valve to test out CS: GO. Here's what we know so far:

Counter-Strike Global Offensive is being developed by Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment for an early 2012 release for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game will be a platform, team based first-person shooter similar to its predecessors Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and Counter-Strike: Source. CS: GO is being designed on the updated Source Engine, and isn't built off of Counter-Strike: Source.

The game is currently in pre-beta, so be sure to take all of this information with a grain of salt. It could all change on a whim, but right now this is what Torbull tested out. CS: GO will maintain the traditional de_ and cs_ map types (he didn't test any new game modes). Both casual and competitive modes will be supported, and Valve is implementing a built in match making system and support for dedicated servers.

For a lot more information on the upcoming Counter-Strike: Global Offensive check after the break.

Torbull mention that during his play through he and his team got to play on the Dust, Dust2, Inferno, and Nuke maps. He also said that Valve confirmed other CS map favorites like train and new ones will be included in the final release. According to Torbull, the maps all looked beautiful and the player skins and animations are smooth, and the gun models look nice too.

Regarding the weapons, Torbull said that this is one of the areas that still needs the most work within CS: GO. "Valve wanted to create a more balanced weapon system that would expand beyond the main four weapons," he said, meaning the AWP, M4, AK, and Deagle. "They wanted sub machine guns to be good mid-distance alternatives and for shotguns to provide a unique close range use." According to Torbull the AK and M4 rifles felt weak and inaccurate while the sub machine like the P90 were overpowered. Other new weapons include a new heavy machine gun rifle, new pistols, and a new shotgun.

Valve intends for the game to have adjustable weapon variables, meaning that the guns can easily be tweaked before beta and especially before launch. There's also a few new equipment items making their way in to CS: GO. One is the Molotov cocktails, an expensive $850 item which is used to slow down and re-route opponents through area of effect damage. Torbull says that the Molotov cocktails can be used strategically to slow down Terrorist rushes through the tunnels into B on Dust2 or by Terrorists to slow Counter Terrorists on retakes. The grenades are currently stackable and they bounce, versus breaking instantly, and says that the developers might need to revisit that aspect.

Another new item is the decoy grenade. Decoy grenades can be thrown to emit gun sounds and "and give the illusion of there being a player." The decoy currently produces an AK/Glock noise when thrown by Terrorists and a M4/USP noise when thrown by Counter Terrorists. The pro players suggested that the decoys should instead produce gun sounds of a weapon held by your team, which was a well received suggestion, according to Torbull.

He said that, if done right, these new items have the potential to change the way traditional competitive Counter-Strike maps are played.

Other changes that Torbull mentioned were how CS: GO is experimenting with automatically equipping a random member of the Counter Terrorist team with a defuse kit at the beginning of each round in order to make the kit a special item like the Terrorist's bomb. They're also testing giving everyone armor and full Kevlar each round.

Because everyone got full Kevlar each round, Valve tweaked the price of some guns and money rewards to balance things out. Once the pros and beta testers get their heads around how useful different weapons will be in CS: GO they'll be able to make an educated decision on how much everything should cost and whether or not starting out with full Kevlar or not is a good idea.

To me, reading all of this gets me extremely excited for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Torbull said that the game doesn't feel like Counter Strike 1.6 and that despite being built on the Source Engine, it doesn't feel like Counter-Strike: Source either. Since Valve is bringing in professional players (even though they only brought CS:S players so far) to help balance the game before they even put it in to beta, I think that CS: GO has amazing potential to be a future eSports title on the larger stages.

With all of the new details about CS: GO, are you more or less excited about the newest Counter-Strike iteration? Let me know in the comments, and let me know what other developments you want to see come out of Valve's next FPS.
Head over to ESEA to check out Torbull's full preview on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

I lost all hope when they started talking about the new items, and giving the defuse to a random CT

They're taking away all of the things that made games like 1.6 and 1.3 extremely fun, and replacing them with re hatched ideas of modern popular games.

What's promising to me is that they are reaching out to the community. Even if it is the cs:s community(who knows if they are considering the 1.6 community?). The fact that they flew 20 players in from all around the world to test it out, is saying something. Since this is pre-beta they will be adjusting a lot of things based on the responses they got from those 20 players. Plus once it's in beta I am sure they will still be adjusting major issues as needed. It's just good to see Valve recognizing their competitive community for once. It's a step in the right direction. A little too late? Who knows. But one thing is for sure....there aren't many new fps games on the horizon that are good for competitive play. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that CS GO won't be a huge failure. :D

They've always "listened" to the input from the community, but in the end fat fucks like Newell will just say OMG GAIZ I THINK DIZ WOULD BE GOOD and ruin the whole game. Like dod:s

makes you wonder who is actually designing the game. how could you develop a game for more than a decade and not understand what this would do to the game? it's a pretty basic part of the game that you can't protect a player on your team and protect bombsites at the same time. it adds a little dimension of strategy to terrorist (you could try to spot and kill the defuser every round) or you could just play the same way and win more rounds when the other team doesn't have a kit to defuse with.

At some point you actually have to start building games not around what people thought was awesome in 2000 as far as game mechanics do.

PC gamers seem to think everything should stay the same forever. That's not going to happen. Console gamers don't get this kind of treatment. Like, either play or don't but at some point you seriously have to let go of whatever existed 10 years ago as far as "top game" and say things will be different.

CS 1.6 was awesome, for like 6 years. It is 5 years beyond that. It is 2011 pushing to 2012.

That doesn't mean they should make a shitty game, but it does mean people need to get a fucking clue when the engine is different, then the game will be different.

no one minds the game being different, its just no game manages to get the same feel as CS did. thats all anyone wants and no title since 1.6 has really managed to do it.

yeah, i don't agree with you AT ALL mitch. quake 3 is the best game ever created. cs1.6 is right behind it. chess and checkers aren't bad games because they're old. i don't know why game publishers/developers feel the need to significantly change the gameplay instead of just making the game more immersive by using better graphics, better models, better maps, more interactive worlds, etc.

Discounting a game simply because it is not 1.6 regurgitated is the problem. Dislike the game because the actual game play sucks. If you want to play 1.6, then go play 1.6. Different doesn't imply bad, it implies different. If that different is shitty (like your bullets not going where you aim the gun), then it sucks and you can say it isn't an improvement over what existed before.

However, this is like saying Super Mario Brothers sucks because it was not a direct port of Mario Brothers. Oh, god, they added a dinosaur you ride and a lot of other things that make game play different!?!?!

If you like Q3, then play Q3. Just don't expect games released 15 years ago to be simple updates of graphics, and that is the only thing that can be made better.

Also I hear that there's a new free AoE game. Gonna check that out soon.

same deal with diablo 3, but everything i've read is an upgrade over d2. cs:source brought better graphics and worse gameplay because the developers for that game didn't understand why the original game was addictive/fun.

ding ding ding ding

The vast majority of all game developers/programmers are huge geeky pub-type gamers.

It makes sense, but it's been a big problem for the e-sports industry for a long time.

DoD had HUGE issues with this when it was in development. The disconnect between the mindset of a competitive gamer, and the mindset of those developing DoD and DoD:Source was astronomical. This is how we ended up with all the british/para/bazoka junk, and how Source ended up with fucking rifle grenades as a main weapon.

It doesn't sound like it's gotten a lot better for CS:GO. Just the fact of what they did with the CT's defuse kit shows how little the developers of the game understand how their game is actually being played.

blizzard also takes an active interest in the competitive community and had a number of pro gamers actively testing and giving advice for sc2. they listened to the community. hopefully, activision doesnt completely fuck that up more so that they already have.

Valve ruined CS 1.6 with CS:S, DoD with DoD:S, and L4D with L4D2. Prior to knowing details of CS:GO, what DID keep you from feeling they'd fuck it up?

The Quake, StarCraft, and Unreal/UT developers had done a great job updating their games while still keeping a strong competitive feel. You'd join any server and immediately get dominated; you were forced to better your skills at the game to do well. Valve simply just likes to make games easy to pick up for the average gamer. To expect anything less would be foolish.
