I think a lot of it had to do with how exclusive the top was. For those few seasons 03-06 there were the same teams in invite, with the exception of zero|k sp3c and gomi. only 1 of them really being successful at an invite level
If you weren't in one of the clicks of good players, you weren't going to get to the top. A lot of players with serious skill came around later than everyone else and were simply labeled as cheaters because they weren't known in the community (sure probably half of them were cheaters but that's aside the point)
I think cal-m had it's own breed of competition, just because of how badly everyone wanted to get to invite. Teams were constantly dying, reforming, and being created from scratch in hopes of moving to that next level. I think there was a lot of individual skill that matched the individual skill of the invite players, the teamwork could just never compare.
Maybe it's just me, but I think the community really hurt itself by how unfriendly it was to new faces and just how overall ruthless it was lol.
