Potential Lan Ideas

Post by Polak »

Sorry, that thread is now up to 12 pages and after skimming through it, I think there should be a poll for two things:

1) You make your own team to come down with OR its a 12man or some kind of draft.
(Not that it matters but I personally want to make my own team and if you get knocked out there should be a place to set up some kind of 12mans. Lets say for example: we have tourney comps set up, but we bring 4 tables to set up a 12man stand with personal computers, I want to make the most of time and space, if you get knocked out early there has to be something there to keep people around other than the tourney players still playing, rented strippers too maybe? keep reading)

2) Prize purse... I saw an idea posted; 1st place 3000, 1500 for 2nd and 500 for 3d. Just scratch that whole idea or just make it smaller. 5 thousand for the prize pool is 5 thousand out of money going towards the structure of the whole entire thing. If the money is going to be donated specifically for the prize money (which i doubt is possible) then I don't care about. I truly don't give a fuck about the money, I care about the memories (too gay?). If you raised 5000 for tourney Id rather see that money spent on getting people to this lan that are less fortunate than others (ken) or making the whole entire experience more memorable. WITH 5 GRAND WE COULD RENT OUT A STRIP CLUB AND EVEN GET STEALTH LAID (HAVE YOU SEEN STEALTH HE NEEDS THAT) and have an open bar and shit, have free breakfast in the morning... ya dig?

i actually like option 2 a lot. spending the money in a general "fuck it - lets blow our money its vegas" attitude appeals to me.

but some people wont go if theres no prize to be won, so i doubt that will even be an option.

If you want to win, just bring Tony Compton. He'll smack controllers out of kids' hands.

Well, it's not so much a choice, as it is just figuring out what it is that we are capable of, and we can only figure that out in time as we go.

When it comes to fundraising, it's much easier to secure sponsorship when there is an actual organized tournament. It's really difficult to get businesses to help out, especially in this economy, if it's just for "meet-up" lan party type event. Regardless of what kind of event we end up doing, I want the focus to be on getting as many of us together in one place and having a really good time as opposed to competing relentlessly for a mediocre prize pool.

In a perfect world, I would want to host a big BYOC for everyone, with an attached double-elimination tournament. The problem is that logistically this really isn't possible, we can really only realistically do one or the other. Either way we have to find a way to raise a bunch of money.

BYOC's are very, very expensive. The logistical costs of managing the network and power consumption is exponential to the number of attendees. As soon as you go over 30 or so people, it gets incredibly expensive. I don't think a BYOC is an option for us at all beyond a local "meet-up" type scale.

As far as a prize pool goes, if we have a big tournament, the cost to attendees probably won't be impacted very much by the size of the prize pool, most of prize pool money would come from other donations and sponsors. I see the cost of attendance being at least $50, but no more than $75 regardless.

There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes on this, but I don't want to come out and say anything publicly until things have been set in stone. But, we are going to be doing some other online tournaments and stuff after the new year as we figure out what the best way to go about this is.

Anyway, to summarize, if we go forward with an organized tournament, the overall goal will still be the same, to get as many people as we can together for one last competetive lan in a fun location, and to raise some money for some really good causes, and have a really good time looking for strippers and cocaine.

The prize pool (if any) will not be the focus of the event, just a nice addition.

Have to give him credit as the strategy worked...for about 3 seconds until the kid just picked the controller up again.

Nerds want to frag in person one last time.

Trying to organize one last "big" LAN for next summer (or sooner) probably in Vegas or Austin or something like that.

Currently trying to raise money and figure out how big of an event we can do and where we can do it.

Whatever we decide to do with this lan, if it happens, there is one thing we should do while there.

Have some sort dedication or moment of silence for NIck "Oxossi". This is serious too btw.

Tag up [ox] or something in the finals match or some shit like that, or throughout the entire LAN.

Our community isn't that big and not everyone always gets a long, but if we're doing one big last hurrah it would make good sense to come together and pay our respects to a fallen and liked member of our community.

Option C:

Step 1: Tell everyone money is going for Prize Pool

Step 2: Take all "Prize Pool" money and invest in Strippers and Slot Machines

Step 3: ???

Step 4: Profit!

We're already dedicating a fund to the cause. I think it'd be kind of odd to have people tagging up in honor of someone they didn't really know. It'd feel extremely impersonal if I tagged up "ox" in any way as it'd be a strange representation. I didn't know the guy. It's just a move that close friends would do, and I wasn't a friend to him (as we didn't know each other).

I'm all for honoring friends who have been lost, but having strangers dedicate their matches to someone they didn't know just feels kind of weird, you know?

Funding to what cause?

It was a random idea. You obviously don't have to tag if you don't want to. It was a suggestion. Maybe even a moment of silence. That's another suggestion. And you don't have to participate in that either.

No need to put this much thought into it and over think the thing enough to complain about having to do something you don't have to do.

You ought to re-read what I stated. At no point was I complaining or anything but mature.

Simply saying it might be a bit odd for people who didn't know him to do something maybe more reserved for close friends, or at least people who have interacted with him. It'd feel like I'm intruding on something, putting on the front that I knew him when in reality I didn't.

It's simply showing respect to someone who many in the community were fond of. It's really not any different than flying the American flag at half mast in your yard when tragedy strikes, its a homage of sorts. If anything, you're also showing respect to the friends of said person. I wouldn't see it as a type of intrusion from a "I'm a friend of his and you didn't know him", aspect. It's only impersonal if you blow it off and make it so; if people give others shit about it...then they have the problem.

Really? No different than flying an American flag? I can think of lots of differences.

Simply saying if someone told me to tag up for a stranger, it would feel weird. Like, I didn't know him, he didn't know me, it's weird to dedicate a DoD match to that.

OMG chill out with all of this dedication stuff.

I chose to do something in memory of Nick because when you form a non-profit you have to have a specific cause that you are working towards (and raising money for). I thought Nick was probably still fresh in everyone's mind, and was well known enough by the majority of remaining community that it would be meaningful to most.

I totally understand people wanting to remember and honor other players from DoD history that are no longer with us, but our resources are limited and we can't logistically get carried away.

There will be more news on this front as we get further along in the process.

Let's all put a tag in our name for every DoD member who's passed away that people in this community remember. Alex Kirk likes wearing tags. Let's also change the scholarship fund to be in memory of all those fallen members rather than just for ox. Duh.

actually can i step in here. i must say that alex's avatar is close to hipster but does raise a few questions regarding the level of hipster-ness:

exhibit A) the converse are not dirty enough nor are they close to falling apart.

exhibit B) although the jeans are well worn they are not skinny jeans or even slim fit, a questionable hipster choice

another question: what is the wood that you are resting your shoes on? it looks almost like a church pew, and if so, then definitely hipster. i would applaud you.
