I wouldn't say it "died so quick," I mean compared to starcraft and counter-strike sure. However, keep in mind the game was released beta around 2000, and retailed spring 2003 (1.x), almost 9 years ago. Given the fact that there are as many teams in TPG as there are this long after the fact, is pretty impressive.
