I'm all about people using IRC, and I was sad when it didn't last the last time we tried this, but I just don't have a whole lot of time left after everything else to bother people about idling. But, if someone else actually wants to give a consistant effort into getting the community to use it long term, I'de totally support it, and I'll always try to at least keep #1911 up and running.
At this point, irc seems like an unnecessary middle man.
While it's been tried repeatedly (to varying degrees of success), creating a single, all-encompassing dod steam group is the best way to organize the community for 12 mans, scrims, recruiting, etc.
Everyone is already on steam.
Steam has built in instant messaging.
Steam groups have built in chat rooms.
irc is just an inconvenience now, from my point of view at least. There's no reason why steam groups can't be employed to better and more efficient effect.
edit: and we already have 1911. What real communicative gaps is irc going to fill? The only purpose I see behind this is nostalgic.

Would open it up when I started a work shift over the summer. After an 8 hour day, would look and the only thing that was in the channel was joining and leaving. As good of an idea as it is, I don't think it will work nowadays. :/
I disagree with steam friends being a legitimate way to organize a community because of 2 reasons:
1. Once a certain level of people is reached within a steam group you can't easily message them without clicking on the "view all members" button. This is a problem for both of our largest scrim/12man related groups(12 man DOD and Official dod scrim & 12 Man Network)
b. It's much easier to organize a 12man or get a scrim in IRC than it is to on steam friends if we actually have enough people from the community using IRC.
