new computer, rawr!

Post by tenks »

I built this baby for my friend this time last year..and all he's done is browse the web with it..Totally neglected. He just bought himself a new macbook pro so I convinced him to let me "look after" this for awhile (permanently 8-) )

intel i7 2600k

16gb gskill ripjaw ddr3 1333

corsair c300 64gb ssd
wd cavelier black 2gb hdd

gigabyte geforce gtx 560ti OC ed

I know intel's latest chip, ivy bridge, comes out next month and I know nvidia's 600 series comes out in 2 weeks..But they're more incremental upgrades...this baby screeeaaams

Got it overclocked to 4.5ghz on air and ram up 1600mhz. No more laptop gaming!

Too bad that power supply is overkill unless you add another 560Ti.

I recommend you to buy a "third market cpu cooler". The original cpu cooler that comes with AMD and INTEL is so loud!
Specially when you got the CPU overclocked! Download CoreTemp/ HWMonitor to look at the temperatue, Idle and Load.
I recommend Antec 620 cpu cooler but if you want a cheaper one, Cooler Master Hyper 212+ works good. Buy 2 extra fans and run PnP (Push N Pull). Schyte Gentle Typhoon series, Enermax and Phobya´s fans work good.

Btw what case is it ?

It´s not always bad. When you got extra W so are the PSU more quiet.

edit : Now I will problaby get negged by linus as last time :D

That's basically the exact same build I have except I have an OCZ SSD and a stock gtx 560. Runs like Usain Bolt, even with 3 VMs and tons of crap in the background.

Like I said I built this for my buddy last year when SandyB dropped. I had no idea what his intentions were or what he'd eventually get into with it..I wanted to be ready in case he got into PC gaming more and wanted to do SLI down the road..Didn't wanna have to go in and replace stuff..just pop a new card in. Besides PSU's aren't really expensive.

Nothing is overkill when it doesn't hurt you and its not your money. :D

I just picked up the machine on friday and completely took it apart, cleaned it (OMG dirtiest comp Ive ever seen), reapplied artic paste etc, reformatted/reinstalled/updated firmware and overclocked. etc etc. I haven't had time to go out and buy stuff for it. The core temps are fine, I got Everest Ultimate Ed and ran a bunch of stability tests. I know what I'm doing but thanks for the tips. If I see the temps rise when I start working/gaming on it, I will probably look into getting an after market cooler. The case is a cool master storm scout. I really like it.

I didn't pay for any of this. I got this all for free. So I'm going to try to leave it as is. If anything, I wanna throw another wd caier black in there and run it in raid 0 for my rendering and editing purposes..

Until this landed in my lap, I was looking at getting the new i7 3900 series and geforce 600 series whenever it drops..But beggers can't be choosers.

Meek, that's rad. I was pretty happy with what I picked out when I built this a year ago. It's still a beast. Can't wait to start rendering on it~! Upgrading from a core i7 dual core laptop. It was good but it was a laptop.

I built a setup in that case a while back for a friend and he complained about it being fairly loud. Does yours run pretty quiet? I have a sneaking suspicion that he a bitch.

could just be the fans in the case? I've had some ridiculously loud fans, running a few Noctua NF-P12 now and my comp is very quiet, aside from when I ramp up the fans on my video cards.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I was playing dota 2 last night with all the max settings a 2560x1600 - I was hitting around 61 degrees on full load. Also on the sandra stability tests, full load, wouldn't go higher than 61-62°C.

Right now it idles at 35°C, gotta few basic apps running... Pretty solid temps for a stock cooler and 4.2ghz oc. Then again it doesn't run 4.2ghz 24/7..

As far as the case..Is it a bad one? I like it a lot and no, it's very quiet. I'm really shocked how quiet it is. My laptop seems louder than this. And whoever asked, yea I already have the push and pull thing going..Came stock with the case. Intake fan, and 2 outtake fans; one at the top and back.

Just built two computers at work the other day using that same power supply and the Z68 chipset version of that board. They both have 2700K CPUs with 580GTXs. Two incredibly fast machines, two very happy customers!

The push/pull he was referring to was for an aftermarket heatsink you don't have. Go fork out $25 for a Hyper 212+ and call it a day.

Pretty good for cooling on air. I have an AMD X4 975BE, had it OC'ed to 4.0, just bumped it to 4.4ghz for a while yesterday, ran prime95 on it for a while and topped out at 51*C, but I'm also using a corsair H100 with 4 of Noctua NF-P12 on the radiator in a push/pull config.
