Best Leaders

I have the day off work so what better to do than make threads on 1911?

I got to thinking that we always hear of the best players or toughest opponents to play against. One thing I always noticed when the competition was a bit stiffer was how certain teams just played a really tough style of play that made it difficult to beat (or even keep the game close in some cases). I had the luxury of playing in CAL-i as well as making some really solid attempts at LAN tournaments with some of the game's best years after we had stopped playing DoD. Here's a [very] short list of who I thought were the best leaders.

1. chaos - Say what you will about him, but the fact of the matter is he came into dod and in almost no time had assembled on of the top teams in the game. Having played with him at numerous LAN tournaments, he really has a great way of leading a team. We made it to at least one finals match with our entire team being out of practice for years, and I think much of it is attributed to chaos' leadership as the guys we were playing against had much better shots than us at that point in time.

2. scorch - Another very good leader that obviously won the biggest prize purse ever in DoD. I got to play on at least one LAN team with him that I can remember. Much like chaos, we had similar results with him leading us having not played the game in a very long time. The thing that puts him beneath chaos for me was his tendency to focus on his part of the game more than the entire team effort.

3. e`man - Although his methods and approach were a bit unorthodox, he always seemed to know what was best for the team. Our revamped squad leading up to WSVG 2006 had a less than stellar performance online as myself and dane were coming back from six months away from DoD. However, e`man had imposed a couple of class switches on us and it helped us play above our heads in the LAN tournament and finish above plenty of teams that had better CAL-i seasons online than we had.

4. jb - Playing against highball was always difficult. They seemed to mesh well together and have a common goal defined to get their players operating at the same pace. This only comes with good leadership. Although hb seemed to have peaked a little early to keep them out of the finals at CPL 2005, they were still very tough. Even when jb struggled to get into the double digits frag-wise, he was always making sure his team played well despite it.

I have to respectfully disagree because of the fact that a chaos-led compLexity team would have lost to the trackpants crew if cableguy didn't disconnect from the match.

habib. i've never played with him and i know that he was one of the best leaders in dod. being able to take a random group of people and mesh them with a certain type of playstyle, he is one of the smartest players in dod and a great leader.

I kind of disliked chaos and habib, but both were good leaders and knew how to assemble groups of players that complemented each other's style of play. They both also had good ingame calls to know when something isn't working and switch it up; many leaders don't seem to do this when a team is losing because the way they're playing a map isn't working against their opponent.

I'd say tox if he wasn't a ginger.

never played with habib, or else i'd probably mention him. ive heard from credible people that he's a great leader though. just knows how to win. (except for when my CS team beat him and his CS team 13-1 at WSVG Kentucky lan lOOOOl. risK.e-machine was also on his team)

Maybe not for in-game "tactical" leadership, but you gotta hand it to Jaz for keeping a team together over the years. She's had 2 clans in almost 12 years of DoD, and only played on a couple of others before that in beta. dgf has essentially existed uninterrupted since shortly after devil died at the end of 2003... I don't think there is really another instance on the inter-webs that can compete with that kind of longevity.

I think I fragged pretty even with the rest of the team, I had one bad match on lan vs col and we will never let it go! I was f.u.b.a.r like half the team was for that damn match.

The entire roster would also rotate once a month.

I think SKULL had a season once where the team didn't reform six times.

I haven't been playing as long as most of you, so this is all I have for input:

Jaz - Keeping dgf alive, and playing with mostly the same core has been really fun. The only reason I really keep playing dod is because of dgf.

Que - Wasn't quite my "leader" but he was always calm and chill. Never got frustrated, angry, rage or any thing else related to those. Always had great strats and other ways to look at scenarios.

Tweak and Epoxy - each led my first/second league teams. They taught me a lot, id be still a pubber if not for them. But instead I am intermediate caliber

Also, I'm gonna go with gLass. At least back in 2007 when I joined dpk, he was a big part of the reason we did so well imo. He got us scrims vs CAL main teams when we were only in CAL-o and even when we were getting dumped on (wasnt every scrim, but we did get beat up quite a bit) he would keep us motivated and keep us focused. We ended up going 11-1 in the 12 week season, before we choked in playoffs (lol)...

I remember sitting in #devil_priv, watching stuart join the channel, immediately engage in like a 3 hour flame war with Chris (fortislupus), and then you guys called the whole thing off. Pretty great day for the interwebs.
