A couple of my lower teeth are a little loose, but other than that I got lucky on that front, my tongue/lip took most of the damage. Bizzarre accident. The only thing I've been able to eat are smoothies, and even that hurts like shit.

I play 3rd base. It was a low line drive hit hardly right down the third base line, I was about to dive to my right to try and cut it off, but it took one skimming hop about 10 feet in front of me, and then rocketed straight towards my face. I never has a chance to avoid it, as I never even saw it bounce toward my face, all happened in an instant, just a freak accident.

When it happened, I was sure that I had at least lost all of my lower teeth, and it wasn't until I got to the hospital that I found out that I didn't. My tongue was somehow positioned in front of them (I don't totally understand how). So, when the ball hit me, my tongue took all the force of the impact and basically exploded.

The amount of blood was probably the scariest thing, as it just started pouring out of my mouth. People aren't expecting to see injuries like that at community slow-pitch softball games, so there was at least one fainter in the crowd, and my friends wife who drove me to the hospital started to go into shock. Total shit show.

I have 24 stitches on the bottom of my tongue, and 8 or so on the top, it took 4 hours and 20+ shots of novocaine (on my fucking tongue!).

I highly recommend everyone take 20+ shots of novocaine to the tongue as a character building exercise...

It's still way too swollen to tell, but there is a good chance that I'm going to lose some significant taste/control on the left side of my tongue

The whole "shaved" bat thing Tox brought up, I played in a church league and the umps checked bats prior to every game. If you were caught using an illegal bat, you were banned from the league for life. I have a buddy who plays semi-pro softball that travels a bit. Pitchers are wearing hockey masks to keep themselves from getting killed. Be glad that ball didn't hit the side of your head Eric, or we'd have another thread about this community losing another player.
