What is the best server hosting?

Post by CraftyDus »

So far I've tried the following server hosting companies and locations

Multiplay, Herndon VI
Gameservers, Montreal QC
Hosted Game Servers, Pennsylvania PA
Art of War, New York NY
Branzone, New York NY
Branzone, Chicago IL
Branzone, Dallas TX
Nuclear Fallout, Chicago IL
Nuclear Fallout, New York NY

Now I've been very happy with NFO and have maxed out the options available there.
And whether centrally located or East. Whether ticrate jacked or not.
No matter priority designation or how often it is restarted or the log files are deleted.,

I am often amused at the chorus of complaints on the quality of the server performance or connectivity.

Is there a better solution? Or is the acrimony just a bunch of nonsense?
What's the best out there?

Every server has their differences it seems, but no matter which one you get there will always people who say "OMG NY SERVER IT SUCKS!!!!" or "wow the reg on here is terrible" or my favorite I heard one day, "This is an abortion of a server"

Get one which you and your team like and feel comfortable with.

I had nfo in chicago. Cleaned logs and demos regularly and restarted before scrims and matches and whatnot. For the most part people were happy with the reg. There are always going to people to complain even if its registry is 100 percent, either cuz they suck and dont want to realize it, or cuz they cant ever have bad aim and if they miss its servers mistake not theirs. Id recommend finding one you personally seem to like and ignore all the complainers.

what he said. Nv just got a NFO chicago and i couldn't be happier with the reg. seems everyone gets decent ping to it, but you will always have some fucktard that complains and brings down the 12mans. (insert DBO here) :D

I was going to say that the Dreamliner has been good for the most part. All the complaints come from West Coast players. It's a Chicago NFO.

Well dod is already pretty broken online, but playing from cali/az i know is absolute shit to anything north or west of dallas for the most part.

80ping isnt the issue, its the 80choke and loss to go with it that makes us hate all of you fuckers who buy chi servers.

People are just bitchy cunts, and dod is a game where even if your crosshair is on someone and you're stopped you can still miss because the guns have some stupid cone of fire nonsense instead of being accurate on the first shot.

the main problem is different locations suck for different people and no 1 location works great for everyone so you pretty much have to just find what ever works best for your guys and what your preferences are

Dallas. Everyone gets 40-60 ping and the average ping difference is about 10 most of the time. It used to be pretty standard for everyone just to get a Dallas server in the past, but nowadays people just get pissy when they don't get to play with sub-20 ping.

West coast players complain about Chicago because we probably have the worst routing to Chicago ever. I generally get 20-30 on west, 40-55 on Dallas, 100ish on Chicago, 80-90 on East. I don't really hear all that much complaining about servers specifically from west coast players. When someone mentions playing in a Dallas, let alone a SoCal, server for a 12man, it's somehow a dealbreaker when all the west coast people have had to endure that kind of ping for years...

different routing, i got a better ping to the US then to eastern Russia or China and the US should be a longer way from europe and over seas, but that's probably the deal break since you dont have routing there.

i assume there is no direct route from socal to Chicago and it just goes all over to the east and then back to Chicago, or the router and server inbetween socal-chicago are more frequented resulting in more answering delay or there are older routers on the route and probably 100 other reasons :D

and btw. for all europeans, server in Dallas would suck since there the routing is pretty bad from europe makes my ping goes up by 40 and hit close too 200 (even though i got a internet upgrade since i last played on a dallas server). i think no one in the us can cry about the ping if you set your rates properly this shouldnt be a issue everythign up to 150 (150 ping = delay of 0,15 seks which shouldnt give any room for reaction -> average reaction time of a car driver is aprox 1 sek to take any actions like an emergency break) is pretty much playable.

There are two, you can go through Dallas or you can go through Denver. It's basically the same number of hops and same ping unless you're in some weird place where one of them gets shit routing.

I've had an issue where on one map, reg is amazingly good, then when the map changes and I reconnect to the same server, reg is absolutely terrible. Then the map changes AGAIN, and I reconnect to amazing reg. I believe that most of the time when people bitch, it's a problem on their side. Whether its missing, or an outright bad connection to the server.

So, what would cause those different type connections to the same server? Is it routing changes due to heavier traffic?

mostly likely even if you are going the same route you wont be always on the same routers, there are big differences at the routers on the carrier side. right now state of the art routers are the cisco CRS3 systems which start at 90.000 $ and are able to handle a load of 322tbps the previouse series CRS1 could only handle 98tbps, so if you are lucky and get a route which is running only over CRS3 routers which can take a heavyer load and are unlikly overloaded and dont need to cut down the available connections per host you get a faster connections, since you are once connected the route doesent change you will have it the whole time untill the map changes since this is a reconect meaning you get a new route even if if it's the same way you probably dont run over the same routers and may endup on a router whcih is real small and only meant as a backup.

there are also differnt technics within the propretary systems of teh routers which can make connections faster, but there i mostly know what is used in stuff within a company net, but probably these machines have the same kind of technology or even more advanced stuff, espacialy since the backbone should be only fibre channel, there are a lot of changes latley and a lot of new technologys are comeing which make it possible to send more data faster on it, actualy direct fibre channel connections can be faster then what any router so far can handle.

but like i stated previously there are 1000 of reasons why the connections get slower, some of em i can think of right now are overload on first mile to backbone, the technik which is int he box getting the signal changed from electrical into light then routers, network overload, authorisation server and services, firewalls and then you got most of the stuff on the other side to if the datacenter isnt directly connected to the backbone which arent that much.

I'm west coast. Been playing with 90+ ping forever. To me it's never really mattered where the server is or who hosts it. Every server has basically been the same unless there's a noticeable amount of lag or ping inconsistency. Stop crying and just play.

Not to argue or anything, but that's just simply not true. There was a very distinct difference between scorch's SoCal server and all the Chicago/New York 12man servers everyone uses. I'm not complaining--just saying there's a difference.

Chicago typically has TERRIBLE routing to and from that location...I'd rather play with brazillian ping rather than play on a chicago

This is the main reason people complain about reg imo. It's not the server, but the game itself. I'll admit, though, servers have a part in it. Perfect example of a server with bad reg (although extreme) is FURY primary server. Not bashing the server though, the mods are awesome.

For the past 10 years Chicago has been hell to play on from socal. There's been a very clear distinction between the way the game feels on Dallas servers and Chicago servers. Apparently NFO has solved that, because the v! server we played on last season seemed fine even with 85-90 ping. So, get an NFO. They're like 35$ per season, and you all can suck it up and play half/half on our socal and your chicago if you want to have a Chicago server.

I'd much prefer having a Dallas server, but until other teams start getting Dallas servers, I don't really want to be forced to play on a tin can chicago server for an entire match like we did multiple times last season.

playing on a chicago and playing on a socal is not even the same thing at all. You west coasters would have a rightful complaint if we were all playing on a New York, but we aren't. Your response should have been to buy a denver or dallas, no one is going to play on that server, and the ping imbalance rule will probably come into effect.

You all get about the same ping to socal that we do to chicago, even though you're in NY, because guess what, we ping 80-90 in chicago and 85-95 in NY. Is that 5ms what you're going to hang your hat on here?

Because guess what, we had a Dallas server last season and we got fucked by being forced to play on some tin can chicago server when everyone in the server except 3 players pinged better to our dallas server. But hey, they were under the 40ms rule. So, we'll see if you all get to invoke the ping imbalance rule without cheesing your rates (which I have no doubt 50% of teams will try because they're fucking crybaby kids who need to pingrape to try to get a win in a dead game). We COULD all play on Dallas, but that apparently doesn't make sense to you all, so good luck. Maybe we switch to a San Jose server so our ping goes up by 10 and slides us under that +40ms rule. Sounds like a lot of fun, doesn't it?

I think the more pressing concern is why you feel it necessary to crouch in random corners when you go negative regardless of how you play.

Get a Dallas. East coast complains about SoCal. West complains about NY/Chi. Canadians can move in with me if they want to have better ping (unless you're ugly in which case I have plenty of paper bags). Brazilians can go fuck themselves. Euros... guten tag, Fräulein.

I don't see why people complain about playing with 80ish ping. That's what I get to Dallas (or used to) and never minded. You can have 15 ping in a Chicago server and will still miss. Ask Alex Kirk, happened to him all the time. You're playing day of defeat people. Online. Ping is the least of your concerns.

This makes a whooooooooooooole lot of sense. Clearly, the alternative to crouching in corners is to cheat.

... or you could just buy a Dallas and play both halves on that. I still fail to see what all the argument is about. Everyone pretty much pings the same to Dallas. Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless there's some huge price difference between the cost of a Dallas and a Chicago server, it seems like choosing anything but Dallas is just a means to have a better ping for yourself.

The FURY server's reg is bad because of the unlimited stamina mod. The game simply cannot keep up with the player's positions because everyone is just holding down their sprint button.
