Headsets

Post by escher »

So what the hell is everyone using for headsets these days? After something like 7-8 years the mic on my Sennheiser 151's is finally dying and before I just buy another pair I figured I'd ask around.

I use the siberia v2, but I don't really like the soundquality in them. They're comfortable though.

Realize with USB headsets, they have their own built-in soundcard. So if you like your card on your MB, it'll be wasted.

Duh. The Siberia's USB soundcard has some cool features, and it's totally optional.

Well, I wasn't aware if it when I bought my USB headset. Just putting it out there in case it was unknown, jerk!

I have the 555's HD. I haven't used them for dod in 4 years but the sound quality is amazing. Don't get something with a mic on it because then you can't take it with you in public.

I am a bit of an audiophile and I have all kinds of headphones.

Some of them include:

Beyerdynamic DT990 600Ω & DT880 600Ω
AKG K550 & Q701
Audio-Technica ATH-A900x
and my good ol' trusty Sennheier HD590

I use all of these headphones amped via a Schitt Asgard amp & Schiit Bifrost DAC which is a great little combo. All of my headphones have a slightly different sound signature / sound staging so their purposes are different.

You need to determine what factors you are looking for in a set of headphones. Open or closed, what types of music you listen to, gaming / movies / ect, lots of bass / accurate bass / overwhelming bass, all kinds of factors determine what type of headphones you choose.

Some nice closed headphone suggestions if you don't plan on amping them and a smaller budget:

Add on this clip-on mic and you have yourself a nice setup without draining the bank.

Don't forget at least a cheapy sound card such as this with a small headphone amp built-in if you are using on-board:

I tried the Audiotechnica 700 or whatever model and it was a little big for my head and angled awkwardly. The sound quality seemed alright though.

I ended up buying HD555s and they've been fine. The only problem you should be aware of is that the plastic cracks on the side where the band connects to the cups. I've never been aggressive with my cans and other people seem to have the same problem. You can send them in for repair, but only as long as they're covered under warranty. After that, it seems like you're on your own.

A Corsair 1500. Upgraded from some really noisy analog 5.1 headphones from turtle beach. It's pretty sweet.

seinnheiser 350. bar none most comfortable set i've used thus far. in terms of quality undistinguishable from most other high quality headsets. basically, unless you are an audiophile and willing to spend 500+ on a set of headphones and get a desktop mic, i believe sennheiser is the way to go. also, the 350 are imo, slightly better quality then the new 3xx series(i believe the 360's are the newest).

the zalman clip on one they show is just as good as anything else out there. ive had mine for like 2 years now, still works perfect. clip broke awhile ago though, so i just use my phone as a cord holder and set it in front of the keyboard.
