New computer build: Need advice

I really don't have the time to put my own computer together anymore. So a friend of mine has a company that is offering me this set up for 600 bux.

I am wondering if the specs are good for the price. I am also paying for the convenience of this guy building the whole thing and delivering it to my house (he is local). I want to make sure the person who builds it knows what they're doing, so they can make sure the wires inside will be positioned and set up properly for optimal cooling. Both of my builds seemed to have heating and major dust build up problems due to me just plugging shit in.

If the specs arent a bad price for 600, i'll get it. If not, i might buy the parts separately and have him put it together. Any advice is appreciated. price range is 600-750.

They are selling that computer for less than it would cost to build yourself unless the mobo and PSU are really dirt cheap pieces of shit.

I don't really know anything about AMD parts though so I don't know if it'll actually play any recent games.

The FX 4100 is like buying an i3 from Intel, and the AMD card gets blown out of the water by the nVidia 550 Ti. For those who didn't know the comparable, more known items.

That cpu is a $109 piece of shit. It's based on bulldozer core, which is a giant flop for amd. It's slower than a 3 year old phenom 2.

Dont buy amd. Also that video card is mediocre. You can get more bang for your buck if you bought parts separately like taylor said. Also ram is ridiculously inexpensive right now and the price difference from 8gig to 16gigs is minimal. YOu can get 16gigs for under $100 now. Might as well take adv of it before it get expensive again whenever they release DDR4 or some new spec..

Yea dude I could build that system for $300.

If you have a microcenter around you, you can buy cpu/mobo combos for dirt cheap (cpu + cheap/free mobo based on your needs).

I would offer him $350 no video card and go find a nice gtx 560 ti for $150 or less. You would be happy with that.

He is DEFINITELY making a premium on that system.

Also, I counted quite a few spelling errors on that website, which leads me to believe that if the quality control on their website is that poor, I would assume that effort would reflect in their pc-building skills.

Companies like these make things look really great on paper however, they're most likely to skimp on the following parts:
-Power Supply
-Case
-Motherboard

I'm pretty sure that the following applies for the computer you're looking at buying.

-The case is going to be very cheap and flimsy with very few places to mount fans.

-The power supply is likely shipped with the case which will also be extremely cheap, these power supplies normally last about 1-2 years sometimes less

-The motherboard is probably the cheapest they could find which is okay, BUT it may only have two slots for RAM which you may not like.

I put the same build together on http://www.newegg.com using some fairly cheap parts and it came out to 529.54 after shipping. That stated, I feel like you are certainly getting what you pay for after they build it, deliver it and give you a three year warranty. (I would seriously check the details of that warranty)

What do I think will benefit you the most? Put your $750 into parts alone and do everything yourself. You're going to get a much nicer system.

But thanks to everyone for your input. i've pretty much decided i am going to do a little more reading and asking around and do it myself. But i am just paranoid with heating because both of my builds would overheat and collect so much dust so i may still just bring the parts to a friend who knows what he's doing.

anyone have any suggestions for websites outside of newegg?? defrag, what is skilldeals? skilldeals.com or .net are not websites.

slickdeals.net is your best friend. seriously. i have created my own tags / keywords over the years so anything that pops up along the guidelines I've placed shoots me an instant e-mail so I can jump on the deal before they sell out / I miss it.

Honestly, Amazon.com is where you wanna get your parts. They have been my go-to online retailer for the last 3 years since Newegg started sucking it up. B&H is good too when they have a decent sale. NCIX isn't too shabby either (and they have a local warehouse to me) so keep that in mind. FrozenCPU is who I use for all my watercooling / cooling gear.

If you have a Fry's Electronics, they are solid. HHGregg, Microcenter, BJ's, anything along those lines are great brick-and-mortar retailers. Fry's matches internet prices from legit online retailers too. I can't tell you how many times I have used that and Fry's return policy to build the perfect system for myself.

When building a system, you have to decide what your end goal is with the system you are building.

Does it need to be future proof? How long do you plan on keeping it? Spend $600 now and upgrade later or $600 now and wait until you build a new one? What kind of games beyond DoD? Any other purposes for the system other than entertainment and games?

It's easy to get to $1000 if you cover every aspect of your PC such as getting an SSD, a good heatsink for your cpu, plenty of fans to keep a decent airflow in your case, a nice sound card, ect. I'm in my current tower a little over 2K with the watercooling (and I don't have GPU blocks yet either) so it is more of a project on this tower while I wait for the GTX680/670 prices to come down a little bit.

Honestly though, you shouldn't have any overheating problems with basic liquid cooling and the case fans. The issue comes into play when you get into overclocking mostly. You can get a computer good enough to handle any current games without overclocking, and should be able to run them at near max settings with decent fps.

Dust is going to get into your system no matter what. If you buy a case that has removable/cleanable air filters that can definitely reduce the amount of dust that gets into the case, but it's not going to eliminate the problem completely.

If your PC starts to accumulate dust, just use some canned air to break it all up and clear it out. Put an air purifier in the same room as your PC and that may help the overall amount of dust in the room? I clean my PCs every 6 months or so, nothing abnormal about it.

^^This. I am looking to get a new build too with the same price range as you (more towards the lower end) and this was the first question I asked myself. I don't play a lot of games, do video editing, etc. so I don't need a core i7 or a $300 GPU. But for that price range then you could get something like this:

CPU: Core i5-3570 3.4GHz - $230
MB: GIGABYTE Z77-DS3H - $120
GPU: Radeon HD 7770 - $125
RAM: 2x4GB Corsair DDR3 - $50
HD: 1TB - $85
PS: Depending on what you want/need - $70
Case: $60

Total: $740

These are just prices at my local warehouse and I left some stuff off like the optical drive thinking you could use your old one. You can save a lot of money buying combos and/or listening to Defrag and going to Amazon. Then just find a buddy who knows what he is doing and buy him a case of beer to put it together.

#2: Scrap the Radeon 7770 and get a GTX560Ti or GTX550. They can be had for rather cheap these days. I have seen the GTX570 as low as $179 new recently.
#3: The Antec Earthwatts 650 is a solid power supply @ $60-70

I can't stress how amazing that Samsung ram is being that is uses 30nm tech. Easily overclocks to 2400mhz.

Beyond that, that i5 is a great choice if you don't plan on overclocking a whole much. The 2500K has lower temps at clock speeds over ~4.4GHz if that is something you are interested in.

Beyond that, it's all preference.

Instead for the 7770 GPU, buy the 660. It's much better.
If you get enough with money for a SSD, I think you should buy a SSD or 2x 500Gb.. One to have Windows and games on. On the other you have photos,videos etc.
I haven't check how much W the 660 needs, but you should be safe with a 600W (Corsair,XFX,CoolerMaster and Silverstone do I recommend. Look at reviews!)
Get a mITX motherboard and a mITX case. I recommend that if you are going to lan with your friends or move the computer alot. I recommend Bitfenix Prodigy and Silverstone Temjin TJ-08E cases

Buy a REAL cooler and don't use the cooler that follow the cpu. It's so bad to cool and it's loud.
I use a Antec 620 cooler, I recommend you to buy a Antec 620/920 or corsiar's H60/H80.

If he need the computer fast, so are maybe 560Ti better.
But if he want so can he use the HD4000 GPU that follow with the CPU. If he only play 1.3 so is that enough for a few weeks. I play on a 14" laptop with i5-2450M and with HD3000 and for me it's enough to play 1.3 on.
When he get more money, so can he buy a 660.

But with ~10-20% more performance for just a few dollars more, I had pick that option.

But he should buy a real cooler, the Antec 620 cost around $50 I guess, you got cheaper coolers for around $25-30.
If you have the pc close to you when you game or maybe watch a movie on the pc, you live definitely love how silent the pc are

it comes out to about 760 without the OS and the storage HD. i am thinking about using my current old HD for storage, and the SSD for OS and games. i can also use the new windows 8 trial until it comes out in october, which i can then buy 40 bux for the key. i am also looking for suggestions on the equivilant graphics card for nvidia around that same price range... i told him i wanted nvidia but he was insisting on this one. i am aslo looking at the same spec ram by Kingston, which is about 5-8 bux cheaper.

to be clear, my purpose for this new computer is 1) its just time for an upgrade. 2) to play cs 1.6, dod 1.3, and possibly cs:go, and i'd also like to try some other games that are newer just to see how well they would play. not sure exactly what games, but something that has really good graphics so i can see how well it works. i also like to watch a lot of movies and tv shows on the computer, and music of course.

I have the CM HAF 912+, I don't really like the leds and it's to loud. I'm going to buy NZXT H2, Fractal Design Define R4 or maybe a Lian Li case soon. But it's a pretty good case for gaming, because it have many fans so you can cool your system

The motherboard, the cpu, the ssd and the gpu should you change.

AMD's Bulldozer series isnt good at all and my AMD Phenom2 X4 955 is much faster than the 6 and 8 core Bulldozer cpus, in a few programs.
You can get a i5-2500k/i5-3570K for around the same cost. Buy a "K-model", so you can overclock when you need more power.

The SSD have I not any experience with, I trust Samsung, Plextor, Corsair, Intel and Crucial. Samsung's 830-serie is really good and it's cheap to buy a 120Gb model.

The gpu is a old model, 560Ti/7850/7870/660 is much better and cost around the same.

I don't like Windows 8, but you maybe prefer Win 8.

and dan, i dont plan on it in the immediate future, but i would like the option to be able to do that. so i am ok with that price on the mobo if it is going to be able to let me upgrade in a year or 2 pretty easily

well as far as the rest, i am going to buy the Cooler master HAF 912 case on top of this combo, and use that, and give the case that this combo comes with to my buddy whos helping me build it. it also comes with the motherboard that defrag keeps suggesting, which is ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77. it comes with a powersupply thats 750W and sounds good but i have never heard of the brand rosewill. and the ram it comes with is G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). i wanted to get at least 12 or 16 but oh well.

I built this machine for the primary purpose of multimedia and using nvidia surround. While I spent a hell of a lot more than you are looking to spend, it gives you an idea of how much work load a 2500K can handle. I'm throwing out resolutions of 5760x1080 and the 2500K holds its own (overclocked of course). A quality cpu and mobo is something you always want to end up with, you can always add a better video card down the road when your budget permits and have one hell of a machine.

Plus with a 2500K you get the integrated video which can be used with the Lucid Virtu suite of software. Virtual VSync, additional graphics power / lower TDP, and all kinds of other goods. This will allow the you to play DoD without screen tearing (among any other game) and no mouse lag.

Also, don't forget a CPU heatsink. The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ or EVO is the best air cooling you can get for a reasonable price.

Also, Rosewill is a Newegg-owned brand. They are getting better, but I still wouldn't buy their stuff personally.

defrag, any suggestions for the best HSF for the i5 3750 for about 30 bux? if theres any in that price range... my budget is slowly growing towards 900 bux lol. oh well i would rather max out my budget right now and get what i want and be set for 2-3 years, than waiting around to slowly upgrade every few months. i can kill myself waiting around for prices to drop and for newer stuff to come out cuz that shit happens daily. there will always be a "next step up" being released or prices dropping in a matter of weeks.

my amd phenom II runs anything that CPUs sold by intel when i bought it can run. handles any game i wanna play, and doesnt have any issue with anything i do. was also 100 dollars cheaper than the comparable Intel cpu at the time.

I didnt see the combo deals on Newegg before. I was looking at this build which seems good for the price. Too bad its Sandy bridge and not Ivy though.

EDIT: It comes with a Rosewill 500W power supply which seems low. I know a lot of times cheaper power supplies won't run consistently at the power they list. Should I get a better one?

Gurus seem to recommend to get a lot more PSU than you need. It's all about those GPUs, their power requirements, and how many volts you have per rail, or something like that. That's usually your biggest power hog. Most store bought systems have what you need power wise, but not for any substantial upgrades. Personally I would get at least a 650.

unpro. to touch on your ram question, i just feel like it is so damn cheap... why not? i'll buy 8 gigs for 41 bux, but 12 gigs will cost me 15 bux more. why not pay that extra money. its the graphics card that i am thinking about going cheap on right now, and then upgrading that in a 4-5 months. cuz thats where i can save a hundred bucks or so by getting a cheaper one, and it'll be easy to just switch them out. plus 1.3/1.6 wont require a super powerful card. but if 8 gigs of ram costs me 41 bux but 12 costs me 55, im getting 12 gigs.

new development. i had already decided on the i5 3750 (or 2500 depending on price), the asus Z77 that defrag suggested, and the cooler master HAF 912 case. i just found a bundle from newegg with all 3 of those products in it (except the case is the upgraded version HAF 922 instead of 912). pretty ideal. the bundle is also coming with a legit PSU this time, by cooler master, not by some random "rosewill" brand i havent heard of like the last bundle. also comes with some alright ram, 8 gigs of gskill ddr3 12800. looks like i am going to order this right now. this gives me about 200 bux to spend on gfx card, cuz i am already spending 100 on SSD drive... this would put me at 800 bux. not bad at all.

Might consider buying 2 cheap cards and running in SLI, when I built my machine it was like 150$ cheaper to buy 2 GTX 550s than to buy the latest and greatest, for about the same performance. Obviously it's cheaper to upgrade the expensive card, but I don't plan on doing that anytime soon.
