Don't be such a fucking moron josh. Crossfit is fucking stupid marketing gimmick created by THIS GUY, nothing more. Much like P90X and all the others. There is nothing new or innovative about Crossfit. It's a hack job marketing ploy designed to do just one thing, rope people in and make $$$.

Sean is being an idiot because he's doing an olympic style lift as if it's isolation training (like he's done on his bro'd out "backs and bi's" days). That's fucking retarded and he should stop doing that.

- Olympic style powerlifting (like what sean is attempting, albeit poorly) has existed for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

- Olympic style powerlifts are compound (non-isolation) exercises designed to develop power and strength. This is why actual athletes focus on such exercises, in addition to intense conditioning, flexibility, speed, and quickness training, and not on isolation training (body building).

For example, professional athletes (NFL/NBA etc.) DO NOT train like the bros on bodybuilding.com. Not in any way, shape, or form. And guess what, they've been using kettlebells, battle ropes, plyometrics, gymanstics, all of it, since what? the 1950's?

But hey, give crossfit $1000 and a weekend, and they'll make you a professional trainer and you can open your own Crossfit gym!

Crossfit is fucking retarded for a lot of reasons, but especially because it teaches people (especially people with ZERO athletic ability) that they should be doing powerlifting exercises with light weight for cardio, and that this is somehow "revolutionary" and helping them get dat "functional/flexible strength".

THIS IS JUST FUCKING WRONG.

There are a lot of things I like about crossfit for regular people (non-athletes). There are some things they get right (anti-isolation training), just like I like the things p90x gets right (intense cardio). But I can't excuse the dump truck loads of elephant feces worth of shit that they get wrong under the guise of "forging elite fitness". It's just fucking sad, and the idiots that cling to it (yourself included) act like they are the fucking opus dei of the church of working out.

Get the fuck over it. We get it. You're training to "live in the world..." with all of your "functional strength".

Give me a fucking break.

Moron.

I think CrossFit has become one of the topics you don't want to discuss with friends/family/acquaintances. It's basically a religion at this point.

I don't do crossfit at all, but we however do use some of the techniques in the "mma world" Believe me brosuf, I know crossfit is a gimmic, just like all these idiots u see giving private "Boot camp" lessons in your local park. Its the new phad and fat lazy people will always look for the newest and brightest way to lose weight. Me personally I would get alot more out of doing some crossfit exercises then I would lifting heavy weights. However, I'm not looking to compete in weight lifting competitions or trying to impress girls at my local gym. We work on alot of twitch muscle exercises with high intervals to train the muscles to compete for longer amounts of time. I guess to each there own but I do not see ANY reason to be lifting heavy weights unless its to compete. You can throw all your bodybuilding.com facts out you want but you can't convince me that lifting like that even with good technique is not somehow bad for the body, especially down the road in life. And Brosuf you roid rage harder then anyone else on these forums so take some test 250 and calm down.

My jimmies are only moderately rustled, but more so by people that I have to deal with on a daily basis IRL than you nerds on 1911. Seriously though, what you're saying is that you basically agree with me, so I don't know why you called me out to begin with. I'm not a bodybuilding.com bro, that's alex and ricky. The guy who wrote the vertical jump bible said that you'd be happy with your vertical jump around the time when you can squat 2x your bodyweight. S&C coaches know that a guy who can deadlift 500 is fundamentally capable of cleaning more than if he could deadlift 300. (I don't even think 500 is a huge number in the world of powerlifting... the big guys have pulled more than half a ton. The general sense I get is that 600ish is about when you go from the realm of "guy who's been lifting for a long time" to "powerlifter who trains solely to get better at lifting".)

Point being that getting stronger increases your force-generating capabilities and your power potential. Lifting heavy is the best way to get stronger, so that's what people do. I don't really understand why you think that building stronger muscles, stronger tendons, and thicker bones is going to lead to long-term problems.

Scorchy poo I don't think building stronger muscle will lead to long term problems if done right. I do believe doing "power lifting" and when I say power lifting I mean all the shit most people cringe at doing like squats, deadlifts, cling and press, heavy shoulder shrugs, military press you get the idea. I dont think you're going to have issues by doing heavy bench, curls, legs,etc.... Me personally when I was playing college football my coaches had me doing military press and I ended up tearing my rotator cup that still gives me fits to this day when im grappling (juijitsui) or wrestling. Sure not everyone will have problems but to say that lifting heavy heavy weight over a long period time does no damage to tendons and muscle fibers is just plain silly. All im trying to get at is there is ABSOLUTELY no point lifting that kinda shit unless you're looking to compete, its just not worth it. The majority of people in the gym are looking to get "fit" and you can easily do that by lifting light weight with lots of reps.

It sucks that you injured your shoulder while lifting, but pressing is actually an important movement that doesn't get trained enough. Tennis/baseball/volleyball all use movements that can injure the shoulder, and pressing strengthens the rotator cuff to protect it during those movements but sadly most athletes playing these sports don't know that unless they happen to be athletic enough to play at a high intercollegiate level where they can make use of an S&C coach/programmer.

Is there a point to deadlifting 500 pounds for your average joe? Probably not. For most people that do that, they're either training for athletic competition or they just want to see how far they can push. For someone like me who grew up a moderately athletic beanpole, I wish I had known how to lift and how important it is to be strong back when I was in high school. My goals at this point are to get stronger and eventually drop some of the excess weight I've picked up over the past decade. I'm not moving insane weights, but I know I feel much stronger than I did 3 months ago. Squat/press/deadlift are the way to go if you want to get real, functional strength. I'll get back to you when I can dunk a basketball though :-P Being weak sucks.

CrossFit cares more about the number of squats, deadlifts, pullups, etc. you can do in two minutes than form and safety. It is by far the dumbest, most dogmatic, and unethical training regimen out there. In terms of fat loss and/or muscle gain, a standard strength routine is infinitely superior. If you're looking to increase the number of times you can flip a tractor tire then CrossFit...actually, no, a standard strength routine is probably still better.

Lifting is not bad for your body if you use a weight your body can handle. Are you joking? Arnold lifted for years, took roids, then completely stopped while doing other unhealthy things to his body. Using him as your model is a joke. Take someone who has been lifting all his/her life and has maintained general health that entire time. Compare someone like that vs. someone who does not lift.

Weird Sean, I'm just going by this

"In other words, you don't lower the bar first and then lift the weight as you do with the squat and bench press. When you train with multiple reps you're beginning to develop reversal strength, which isn't needed with the deadlift.

These two reasons are enough to keep the deadlift training to singles. If you're using multiple reps with the deadlift, then stand up in between each rep and restart the lift. This way you'll be teaching the proper form and be developing the right kind of strength."
#7 http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_art ... cd02.hydra

To be fair maybe the amount of time it took me to reset was a little bit longer than it should have been, but since I'm only 1 month in I'd like to make sure my form is as perfect as it can be before each pull.

You do realize that while the weight he was using was light, presumably due to this being a FORM CHECK video; that stop and go is actually a bit harder than touch and go? His form is pretty good. Back straight, good foot placement, and good hip drive.

Seriously, try stop and go with your normal working weight, taking about a 5-10 second pause between reps. Prepare you anus. I don't know about the bro-science stile threw around about standing up after each rep, but I guess its plausible. It's going to be a pain in the ass to do that if you're using straps, so I'd recommend leaving them in your purse, pussy.

You're doing it right. Sean is just proving what a clueless idiot he is.

For a beginner you look pretty good. Focus on controlling your hips throughout the entire movement. Both the squat and the deadlift are all about developing hip drive. For instance, keep your hips engaged (like you are sticking your butt as high in the air as you can), both as you are lowering the bar back down, but more importantly before you lift the bar up. If you keep your hips engaged, while at the same time keeping your chest up, it forces you to engage and drive with your hips throughout the movement. Also, pay attention to where you place the bar over your feet before every rep, as you want the bar to come up in a perfectly straight line.

"Chest up, not hips down".

This isn't exactly "expert" knowledge. This is super basic stuff that anyone lifting appreciable weight should know about the human body.

wow guys. gj on just straight up attacking my approach on lifting.

I am sorry my picture looks rough. I know how to fucking deadlift. It took me a little while to figure out what worked best for me and obviously that form isn't the form I was going to stick with. I was trying to use that picture as a point to show off my progress. I figured Alex posted his picture, I will post mine, nothing wrong with that. Sorry I sent off the troll alarm. So you know I work my ass off in the gym, probably harder than 90% of you have ever, even your best day in the gym isn't as hard as my normal day. My goal is simple get strong as hell and look even stronger. I will let you know I take your advice, I look at what you have to say and I listen. I listen to everyone's opinion because lifting is something I care about. So don't sit here and patronize me when most of you haven't even come close to a weight as heavy.

In regards to me talking about stile- his form is great. I think he needs to work on his negative portion of the rep. It is not easy to do a negative especially while deadlifting. But you look like a complete ass hole dropping 225 lbs on the ground from a deadlift. You also need to speed things up a little. If you are going at 75-100% of your max for deadlifts then I can understand taking some time in between reps, but you clearly were not. So try and pump those out a little faster. It is easy to get more reps when you have a good rhythm going. Getting your form down is important and I don't know about you but I have an easier time keeping form if I never come out of that rhythm.

Next time I will put more meat to my arguments so you can understand where I am coming from. I just didn't think it was necessary here, obviously I was wrong.

Wait, do you think I'm the guy in the OP?

Thought it would be interesting to bump the thread. I'm up to 255 now. The goal is to hit 300 by the end of 2013.

For shits and giggles. 225

increased my training percentage to 90% in 5/3/1 so I expect things to get significantly harder.

Too bad squats and deadlifts don't get you girls. I'll stick with my four day split of:
1. chest (Barbell, heavy)/tri's
2. bi's/tri's
3. chest (Dumbbells)/abs (up to 500 crunches)
4. chest (Dumbbells, heavy and bar) and forearms

holy shit.. you HAVE to be trolling us with that split. AND your comment about squats and deadlifts dont get you girls. those 2 exercises done right will build the exact physique that attracts girls, as long as you arent eating 6k calories a day and looking like a fat slob entering a strong man competition. if you are a walking biceps/6pack, which is what it looks like based on that split, then i feel bad for you.

This is exactly what I did when I first started at the gym last year... then I read Starting Strength and my mind was blown. It's good to work that stuff into a regular work out plan, but the standard shit HAS to be in your routine, or like seven said, you're just biceps/6pack with no real functional strength. Also it makes you gay... HAPPY NEW YEAR
