Intel or AMD

So what do our community members use.

Intel i7, i5, i3 etc..

or AMD?

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 965. I have been wanting to switch to intel for a decade now but I haven't yet..

Intel i7 2600k.

I believe Intel CPUs run hotter than AMD and AMD is slower in general although that is not always the case. Having used both Intel and AMD CPUs in the past, I do prefer Intel.

What are you going to use your computer to?

I don't really think you should upgrade to a I7 cpu or I5 if it's only for gaming.

I have also a AMD Phenom cpu, but 955 and I think it's good, but I want to play with higher settings in BF3 and for using 3D/video/photoprograms in high quality.

But if you really want to

Buy a I7-3770K - Buy the damn "K" model, so you can overclock later and don't ffs say you are not going to overclock.. Who knows? Maybe a month later you want to try overclock, but then you bought wrong cpu

AMD Phenom II x6 1045T 2.7 ghz

I almost always go with AMD, they seem to have the best bang-for-your-buck if you are buying a slightly older model.

That + HD 6850 has me at a constant frame rate for every game I've played lately. (D3, borderlands 2, skyrim, mw3, etc)

Nothing beats the value of a OC'd i5-2500k IMO. If you live near a Microcenter, its real cheap there.

I'm running an i5-2500k at 3.30 ghz, turbo to 3.7.

I used an AMD in my last build, but for this one, the new AMD chips didn't seem to be keeping up with the Intel chips.

phenom II 955. works great, was 120 or so less than the intel that compared at the time. ive never had an intel system i built, always AMD.

My phenom 2 955 has been running strong for the past 3 years. If you are on a budget then get a 955 or 965 (965 is just an overclocked 955 which over clocking the 955 to 3.2 is really easy). If it's mainly for gaming go for the 955 or 965 and hook yourself up with a killer graphics card. Get the I7 if your gonna be doing a lot of movie editing/multi tasking big programs and what not.

I use a 3570K i5 @ 3.4GHz turbo to 3.8GHz and it easily runs all my games, apps, etc without breaking a sweat. In the past I would have said AMD had the best bang for the buck but with the new generation i3 chips costing only $130 I don't really think that is the case anymore. Really depends on what you are using it for and how much you want to pay. Also, I've heard that any of the i5 non-K chips can handle much faster frequencies without overheating issues.

I always read that CPUs end up bottle necking GPUs, therefore, capping the true capability of the GPU. Wouldn't it be a waste of money to do this?

after the research i did and asking around during my new computer build a couple weeks ago, it looks like intel is the best way to go for gaming as long as you can afford it. if you are on a tight budget, amd will get you more for your money. i ended up going with i5 3750 and its flying so far.

I have an i7 2600k oc'd to 4.2ghz on STOCK AIR, lewls. The bridges are best. Ivy is younger but damn can Sandy get dowwn.

amd is bishop.

what temps does it run on full load? haha. fucking socal heat giving us high ambient temps to work with :[ went watercooling ages ago so that my comp can be oc'd to its max and be completely silent instead of a turbine engine when putting the cpu/gpu on heavy loads :\

I actually finally turned off the OC a week ago. the socal heat/ambient temps was exactly my problem too and I just wanted to be safe.

I dont really have many games, but i play Dota 2 @ 2560 x 1600 fully maxed settings, which is pretty intense..I'd say maybe it gets up to 75 on full load, and when it was hot during the day maybe 80-81 a few times..But this is Intel stock cooling though so Im pretty impressed. And from what I've read, its pretty common for people to run sandy at 4.5-4.8 on air, which is retarded and amazing at the same time.

I'm still running a e6600 @ 3.6 and volt modded 5850. Just hasn't been practical to upgrade when I can still play games at 1920x1080 :[

I have a Phenom 1100T sitting at 4.5ghz w/ a 6850. Both of which are on water; Phenom doesn't break 50 degrees under full load.

intel 2600k. used to be an amd fanboy but when i went to buy a new machine last year, there's really no comparison. amd doesn't even make their processors super cheap to compensate for the fact that intel's tech is way better at this point.

This is a thing of the past and is no longer true. Modern cpu's are no longer a bottleneck, but every scenario and game is different. Sean was just saying in general, its better to invest more $$ into a good gpu than a good CPU for gaming. It's not absolute, just a best price/performance.
