Sweet! That gif is a little misleading, though. This is the Hubble Deep Field. FYI, some of those galaxies are NOT 13 billion years old and some of them do not contain a trillion stars. In fact, spiral-like galaxies formed much later as lighter elements began to cool and form into heavier elements and through the process of accretion and due to the effects of gravity. The earliest known galaxies are smudge-like elliptical galaxies and contain stars which are lower in mass.

Personally, I think the most fascinating part of seeing an image like this is that we are literally looking back into time and those galaxies are probably not even there anymore; Swallowed up by black hole(s) or destroyed through collisions with other galaxies long ago. Yet, the photons physically emitted from their stars from a time of the Universe's infancy, have finally made their way to our neck of the woods.

That last part is what always gets me... I took an astronomy class in college for shits and giggles, ended up being one of my favorite classes. I just remember my teacher showing a picture of the "Cradle of Life" and then saying "Yeah it was destroyed millions of years ago by a super nova, the light waves just haven't arrived yet." So depressing :(

pretty sure that given the size of the universe being the only life is statistically impossible.
I wouldn't even rule out more life in this solar system .. yet. Maybe certain moons, mars ...

Yeah, fuck knowledge right? Are you putting me down because you lack the most basic tools for understanding how this universe works at the most elementary level and are thus projecting your own insecurities on me, or do you think you will somehow make someone worth a damn laugh at your totally unfunny gif?

Caltech recently published estimates that put the number of planets in the Milky Way alone, to be in the range of 100-400 billion. I read somewhere recently that said they now think most planets are rocky and earth-like as well and not gas giants. Combine that with the number of icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter (Europa, Enceladus, Gannymeade, etc.) who have liquid water oceans underneath miles of ice, so there is most certainly a propensity for our own solar system to harbor life. People who think life only exists on Earth are idiots.

Or, I could be trying to reach 50 posts by posting gifs that I find amusing and at least tangentially relate to the topic. Consider removing the rod from thine ass. Be careful, though; it seems to be stuck pretty far up there.

I just claimed it was my intent. You're the one calling them high aspirations (although I will admit, it is a pretty lofty goal). Don't feel bad; just because someone called you out, unintentionally as it may have been, for going to Wikipedia to try to sound smart on nineteeneleven.org, doesn't mean you are a pathetic loser in desperate search of any kind of validation you can find. I mean, you may be a really cool person in desperate search of any kind of validation you can find.
