LAN Discussion

Post by kanguhhh »

Just curious if anybody would be interested in trying to put together a LAN in Atlanta or if anybody would even be interested in attending a DoD LAN anymore? I've lived down here for a quite a while and would be more than happy to contribute if others would help. Flame away.

This is going to turn in to the endless circle that all LAN threads do.

1. OP suggests a LAN in <some city>.
2. Lots of random people contribute saying "Definitely!"
3. One person suggests, "Hey, why not do it in <insert Chicago, SoCal, Vegas> so that we can do more than play dod?!"
4. Lots of people agree of object.
5. Thread dies out and a few people bring the topic up months later. "Remember when people were talking about getting a LAN going again?"

All that aside, I'd consider going to anything on the east coast.

I've never given up on a LAN, just had to table it indefinitely until we have a lot more money. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I won the lottery or something though, fasho.

In the highly unlikely event that around 100 people show.

Just for the networking portion:

1 of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833704123
4 of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833704065
1 of these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833156251
a whole bunch of these (2 x 100) : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812996022
and a lot of this (2 x 1000): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812270131

Total: $918.54

This might be little overboard even for 100 people, but if you assumed that all PCs would be setup at the same time I guess it's actually the bare minimum. Not sure if you'd really need gigabit speeds either considering probably only half of the PCs would support it and the other half would run at 100Mbps.

So for whatever fucked up reason this actually happens..............this is just something to consider.

Luckily for you nubs im on my third year of my computer science and I could easily grab a couple switches, maybe even a router/server if my Poferssor would allow. We have more then enough that we work on and if we did it during summer would make it even easier. Just throwing that out there. Btw all switches 1000/100 mps and corq quad dual at 4.2 gig think its a I6.

In regards to Vegas LAN, That project is ambitious and rather "pie in the sky", but definitely not dead, and still just as much a possibility as it ever was. I did a bunch of groundwork last year, and all of that still stands, we we're just exponentially short on funding for such an event so I had to put it on ice for the time being, such as in the event that I personally become independently wealthy or I'm able to get through to someone at Valve or something and get a lot of help (I have an auto email that goes off to Gabe Newell once a month).

Organizing a big do-it-yourself LAN for DoD is rather challenging because our game is 13 years old and our community is quite small (<500 people), and we are scattered mostly on the far east or west coasts, with a 70/30 split in favor of the east. That means that while a LAN in Atlanta is cheap and easy for the majority of the community, it's nearly impossible for the other 30% that is needed to have a big LAN.

This is why Vegas is a great location. It's cheap to fly to from both the east and west coast, and if you are hosting an event at a hotel, they offer you great deals for your attendees to bundle their airfare and lodging, because they want you too spend more money of strippers and cocaine (and casinos). For instance, one possible location is the Riviera, which for most people would cost $300-$400 for 3 nights stay and airfare, not bad.

The challenge of doing a large LAN like this is simply the logistics. You have to rent the event space, provide all the technology and equipment to handle the power for at least 100 PC's. It really becomes an expensive and daunting task very quickly. Not to mention the burden it puts on everyone who might wish to attend in that they need to find a way to transport their own computer, which can be expensive or undoable, especially to come to a LAN that will likely not have a large prize pool.

Furthermore, getting companies like intel or nvidia to sponsor an event and provide tournament computers for a DoD exclusive event is near impossible, as there is no market for them to gain from fans of 13 year old game on the HL1 engine. The only way I see us getting that kind of help is from a company like Valve doing so for the sake of charity/nostalgia for our community, which has always been my angle in correspondence with them.

All things considered, to host a larger LAN, with roughly 16 teams/100 players in attendance, you're looking at needing to raise $25,000 just to break even and cover all of your expenses (this doesn't include money for prizes). You guys have been awesome about donating to 1911 over the last 2 years, but we've only got about 0.1% of that in our account at the moment.

My point in all of this is just to say that actually organizing these events and pulling them off is MUCH easier said than done, but it's certainly not something I've given up on. However, the scenario in which we could host our own LAN is highly unlikely the older DoD gets.

However, if we can find a great LAN center that wants to help us put on a smaller LAN, as we are accustomed too. I'm all for it, and would be willing to help organize it as much as I could being isolated out here in the Pacific Northwest.

Serious response coming from someone who lives in Atlanta.

There are no good LAN centers in Atlanta. There are a few in Metro Atlanta but none the size or the capability to run what we'd be asking of them (and most of their pcs are horrid horrid horrid)

I do have a friend that is on staff for Atlanta LANfest though and they usually run 2 events a year renting out a hotel space for it. (Also my father works in atlanta hotels so renting his his hotel might be an option)

PS. I live with my parents so no you can't crash at my house. except you stealth. you're cute.

It actually sounds like it would kind of work for us, they have 38 computers.

How many of you east-coasters would be willing to fly out to Vegas for a weekend ??

Me and my wife really want to go to Vegas again. (Last time we had the flu and only got to spend a day there before heading to LA) So I'm going to say I'd probably go if it were later in the year as I'm going to Hawaii for ao's wedding in july.

Anything I can do to help let me know.
I might be able to get the old uKz squad to come back for a bit and play.
Money-B, Mayo and ShiftyP were always about lanning some dod.

I am actually more inclined to goto Vegas than Atlanta. I would say I'd make more of an effort if it was Vegas considering i'm coming from Toronto, so I don't benefit from a cheap flight.

Yes, I have a Vegas house.

No, no one can stay there.

Meh, 200k for a 4 Bedroom in Summerlin (yuppy area). AKA cheap as shit.

Just like the River house I ( and few others own) have in Laughlin. In the "nice" area (above the dam) and is still cheap to build you a custom fit house. 30 mins from vegas kinda sucks but still got the casino's plus river and the lake's(mead and havasu).
Anyone who wants come enjoy some boats and hoes is welcome to drive the 30 mins.
