if you are worried about the amount of people coming for a vegas lan , you might be well off making it a dod 1.3 and cs 1.6 tourney as lots of people would be interested in that as well if you were to advertise it on the esea site.

Not really what we are going for here, and if we didn't have enough demand for a LAN, I just wouldn't do one.

It very well may be too late to get enough nerds to show up. But it seems with every time one of these threads happens that there would be a lot of interest in the event that we could actually get the ball rolling.

If we don't have the resources to host our own LAN with our own equipment at a Hotel (which we don't, by a long shot), then we have to find the best LAN center we can and work from there (the one in Vegas actually seems the best I've found so far).

I'm open to doing this anywhere in the country really, but in order for this to work, we have to find a location that is both large enough to host us (up to 100 players), and that is as economical to travel to as possible. Since there aren't near as many LAN centers open for business these days as there once was, our options are limited.

Like i said before http://localbattles.com/ it only says 20 computers but im sure they can get 4 more computers so we can have 4 teams playing at once, if not a few people can bring there pcs if they are driving, On the website it says "Space for up to 30 gamers or 50-60 guests total,Full day (12 hours) option – $900. Another good thing its about 20 minutes away from new york for some people that wanna walk around. Just giving my idea

It's not the worst I've seen, but it's not a good option for us with what we are trying to do.

The size isn't terrible, but the fact that they focus more on consoles gaming is a downside.

However, the location is awful. It would definitely limit attendance to just those of us on the east coast, if not just those in the Northeast. I just can't see many west of Chicago spending up to $1,500+ to spend a weekend at what would likely only be able to be a 8-team LAN with little or no prize pool.

While this would be cheap and easy for people in the Northeast, we are looking to find the happy middle-ground that gives the most people the best opportunity to attend (both present and past players), this means that location/travel expenses is incredibly important.

actually, I was going through edmonton on a greyhound through the same town that beheading happened in on the 1 year anniversary, to the day. I was at the back of the bus in the dark stoned as fuck eyeing every mother fucker down the lane prepared for a copy cat killer. I even had my 12 inch bowie knife in my boot.

If the lan was in Vegas, I would drive down from Toronto but Vegas would be the only location I would travel to play dod because it would be more of a vacation.

I would also pick up three people in the area if gas was split among everyone.

We need to make a team of people to get this organized. Eric I think has the right idea about vegas. Cheapest overall and great events to go to outside of just the lan. Eric please create a poll on the main site so we can get an estimate of who all will go. Once I see am estimate, I along with others can start contacting hotels and lsn centers. Eric if you could get with valve and continue pushing for that I can as well. Ill also get in touch with them and try to contact some past cpl employees and push for their influence/involvement. (The non crook ones) rough estimate of yhe funds I can put towards this will be around $1000, ill do more if its a good potential turn out. The format I like for starting ideas is 2 tournaments at the lan. The first tournament being a draft to spread out the talent. X amount of captains being invite and the picks will cycle evenly from cal-o up to invite so the talent is distrubuted equally. 2nd tournament of course being created teams vs each other. Tyling from phone and I dont care about my mispelled words right now

That's all very "pie in the sky", but I appreciate the enthusiasm.

I think what you guys need to understand is that these events are not as easy to do as they once were 7-8 years ago when PC gaming was much more popular.

Most "hardcore" gamers are age 15-25, and the vast majority in that age bracket today play console games as opposed to PC FPS e-sports titles. This is why CS:GO is really struggling to find a big audience, it's not that CS:GO isn't a game that PC FPS gamers like, its that there are far fewer PC FPS gamers than there once was because we are all old with babies and jobs now, and the generation of gamers that came after us prefer console gaming by a huge majority. PC FPS games like CS:GO/DoD are now a smaller niche market as opposed to the dominant one they once were.

Because of this, there are very few PC LAN centers out there anymore, and there are even fewer that are large enough to host a tournament and in a location that is economical for our community to travel to (in reality, I've only found ONE so far).

The resources available to us from sponsors is next to nothing, because there isn't much a market for them to tap into, and the economy is such that a small community for a 13 year old game like ours just isn't going to get any support. We are going to have to do this all on our own.

Ask anyone who has ever attended a LAN tournament before (especially for DoD) and they'll tell you how quickly they can devolve into a total shit show. There will be players/teams that don't show or show up late. There will be technical difficulties, steam issues, and delays of all kinds. There will be people who are unhappy, and either threaten to hit you over the head with a sock full of quarters for cheating on LAN, or cry for the whambulance when there aren't adequately designed rules in place in the case of a tie.

My point being is that for such a small community like we are, for a game that is 13 years old, it's incredibly important that we minimize as many of these issues from start to finish, or we simply just won't have a good time or be able to host an event at all. This means that if an event like this is to be successful, it's going to have to be planned meticulously from start to finish. This isn't something that we can just throw together for shits and giggles as we go.

For these reasons, doing "multiple tournaments" or doing a "draft" style tournament is simply out of the question for us. We need teams to be well organized, know who they are playing/traveling with, and ready to show up and play in a timely fashion, or it simply just won't work for us.

For example, if were were lucky enough to have 16 teams show up for a the LAN (KYLAN had 14?), that means that over the course of the tournament we are going to have to play up to 32 individual matches (assuming a double elimination bracket so teams get to play at least two matches). With each match being the standard 40 minutes (assuming no ties), and with at least 15 minutes needed in between matches for teams to swap out (assuming all members are there and ready to play), get set up, get through pre-game and so forth, time becomes an issue very quickly.

16 teams x double elimination bracket = up to 32 total matches = 32+ hours of game time needed.

Most LAN centers, like the ideal one we have targeted in Vegas will allow us to have up to 2-3 matches going at one time, or 2-3 matches completed on average every hour. This means that if we have a 16 team double elimination tournament, that we will likely need 4-6 hours of rented LAN center time just to get through the FIRST ROUND of the tournament.

Each round gets quicker as you go (because there are less matches), but the reality of this often surprises/frustrates players who attend LAN tournaments. You will spend much more time waiting to play at a non-byoc LAN then you will actually spend playing, especially if there is any kind of delay. There will also be no time for teams to scrim on LAN, you'll need to show up ready to play with your teammates (another reason a "draft" style LAN doesn't work).

So, there is much work and organizing to be done, but I really appreciate the enthusiasm you guys continue to show for doing a LAN, so I'll get to work on it as best I can.

First things first, we need to find at least one potential location and determine how much it will cost for each player to register for the event, travel to the event, and find lodging at the event. Once we find out that information (which is what I'm doing now), then we can have some kind of poll that I'll spam to everyone's email to see just how many people might actually attend. It doesn't do us a whole lot of good to have a poll for an event that a huge number of people who are participating in the poll wouldn't be able to attend (even if they wanted to), and I can't simply put a poll up for random locations, because we are bound by the locations that have LAN centers for us to use (so far just one).

In the event that I find a potential location, and figure out an estimate of how much it will cost you to attend, and enthusiasm is still high and many of you still plan on attending; then we'll do this shit, fa sho.

So, anyway, I'll get started on this, and I'll let you guys know if/when i hear back form 8wire.

All i got from eric's post was that we should just get valve to put dod on xbox and then we would be golden.

Otherwise prepare for a headache, ive only been able to do one "lan" and that was ctlan because ive just never had the money or knew people near me that were going to the others, and that was CTLan, it was one of the earlier ones, it wasnt really done as a tourney more of a meet and greet among players on the very new england part of the east coast, which at the time was alot, had about 40ish people there. Escher was there, in fact thats where the escher sprite picture was from. Even that, when dod was really popular by comparison, had about 35 people not show. we had intended to do a draft style tourney as beas suggested and it ended up being a no-go, we all just played and did whatever. So i guess im trying to say good luck, but if teams cant even stay alive for an online league, are they really gonna follow through with something that takes substantially more effort, or if life gets in the way? You need like 150 serious yes's to get 100 actual people to show.

If i believed this would truly happen, i'd possibly be interested, specially regarding vegas.

for the most part, the majority of the teams that have shown up to the east/west coast lans in the past 5 years have been different forms of the same teams.. some form of thunder, noluck, handicap, nogo, washed up players (uKz or washed^), 3h, and so on.. then, depending on the location a lower tier team or pug such as GSR will show up..

considering the state of dod.. i'd be surprised if you had 10 teams show up for a vegas lan (i'd expect 6-8).. most of the players and teams that are left aren't even willing to scrim against a good team because they're afraid to lose.. there are exceptions (mainly open teams that are willing to get their asses handed to themselves if it means becoming better at dod)..

anyways, i'll be there.. but don't be surprised that the usual people that say they will and fizzle out when it comes time for the lan won't (most of the community that's left playing to this day is full of those teams/people)

I have always wanted to go to vegas, so I may monitor this from a distance and consider some kind of epic gambling-dodding extravaganza. return flights from manchester seem to be ~£450. sadly that's like $2000. LOLZ

i gotta get these jokes in now because apparently the dollar is doing very well recently.

This has certainly been the case for us in the past, but the idea with this event is to put more resources into something over a longer period of time so that we can have one last large event (with a max 16 teams).

Because of this, we aren't so concerned with "the state of dod" as it is right now. What we are trying to do, is organize an event that not only provides and opportunity for people who are actively playing in 2013 to participate, but for people who are not actively playing to do so. In the few conversations I've had with older players (who are now grown ups with jobs and kids and stuff), there does seem to be a demand there to organize and to come play at one last big DoD LAN. I don't think there are enough active players right now to justify even a 10 team LAN, but if we can generate a lot of interest from PAST players (like myself), we can get there, and have a really incredible swan-song event for DoD.

LAN dodging has been a problem for the community in the past when we've tried to do these things, but that will be less so with this kind of event. For one, you'll likely need to pre-pay for the event with your entire team in order to enter the tournament. There will be a limited capacity for last-minute arrivals and ringers who don't have a team to still come to the event, but we won't be allowing teams to register for the tournament without pre-paying.

There will also likely be an online component to the league, in that we will have all of our round-robin group play matches online, probably finishing a couple of weeks before the event. This will determine the seeding for the LAN, and determine if any teams will receive bye's in the first round (in the event have an odd number of teams).

Obviously, we won't be able to do a large Vegas event if there isn't a demand for it. My idea with this is to shoot for the moon, and if there isn't a demand for it, we can downsize after the fact. An 8-10 team tournament would be exponentially easier to manage (and arguably preferable) to a 16 team event, so if there simply isn't high enough demand for a larger event, we can look at doing a smaller regional event(s) on the east/west coast.

KYLAN was a really well organized event. Think of this event as KYLAN on steroids.

So I just talked to my room mate whose brother worked for apple and had valve as a client. He actually met the guy who did the voices for dod so I'm going to try and find out if he still has that contact.... My buddies brother doesn't work for apple anymore and actually lives in Vietnam so I'm not really getting my hopes up about it, but it's worth a try. Wish it luck Gents.

Expect to see new thread in 3 months.
The difference is that I've been working on this on my own for over a year, we just don't have any money :(

I expect your support in the event that we actually get this figured out and scheduled. :x

Catch 22-esque situation.

- We're not going to get a substantial amount of money if people feel they'll be giving to something that will never happen.

- We can't truly organize anything without confirmation (MONEY) that people are actually going to show.

I honestly think what we need before anything is a solid questionnaire to be sent to the masses. Before we can choose a location or set a date or determine price etc. , we have to know the willingness of the people that play the game. I'm not saying that based on that feedback we'll be able to determine the specifics of everything but I think it's going to give us a good idea of the community's thoughts on a LAN tournament.

Clearly you'd ask questions such as:

(obviously) Are you willing to compete in a DoD LAN Tournament?
Where do you live?
How far are you willing to travel?
Are you willing to provide your own PC?
etc.

Make it look professional and make the intent very serious. Ask for a small donation (e.g. $5) to help get things jump started.

I may be telling you shit you already know but I'm just sharing my thoughts.

Am down to play. Am down to help.

My god, I feel like you guys are making beat the shit out of a dead horse here.

We've already done polls and questionares and all that nonsense. But in reality, none of that matters because we don't have many options when it comes to location. Many of you guys seem to be under the impression that there a ton of LAN centers all over the country for us to choose from. Please digest this information as best you can: THERE AREN'T.

In fact, there are very few. In reality, we have about 3 different locations to choose from; SoCal, New York, and Vegas, with Vegas BY FAR being the best option on all fronts.

Here's what we know:

- We know people want to play DoD on LAN, or at least say they want to on 1911.

- We know we don't have near enough resources to host one ourselves (byoc at a hotel).

- We know that there are very few large LAN centers in the country, with Vegas being the best option by far.

It's really that simple.

Let's see how much an event in Vegas will cost us, and how much it will cost all of you nerds to attend. If not enough people are wiling/able to attend, then we will do something smaller or nothing at all.

as soon as a fairly accurate amount of money needed for the LAN is determined the better. I and am sure others would be willing to help the LAN financially. A site with some sort of goal and the ability to donate would be great.

I know I would only be interested if there was one in SoCal, so it would be like every other southern California tournament after WSVG. It could be taken lightly as it's usually just a short drive and I can see how well I can do. I also think a lot of the older SoCal players feel the same way- at least the ones I still keep in touch with. Vegas sounds like a cool idea, but I think if I'm in Las Vegas, I'd feel a little strapped by the idea of having a dod tournament to play in. It could definitely be something very fun and would make me reconsider making the effort to leave southern California to attend a dod tournament, though.

New York was awesome when I went there for a dod LAN a few years ago, but I don't think I would do it again just to play day of defeat for a couple days.

All in all I think it's a great idea to try and get one going somewhere, assuming you have the backing for it, of course. Whether I attend or not, I know it would be fun to have some real competition back for the newer players who either didn't get to play on LAN before, or were too new to the game at that point to be able to compete on the level they do now. Definitely a cool last stand.

anybody good at conning people or making a false charity? lmao i tihnk thats the only way to make money and at the end of the day whos really going to believe it when we tell them we used the money for a dod lan.

i think sears is actually doing what is needed. we need to know what the lan center can do for us and how much it will cost. its not really about who can attend at this point more so what we will need to make it happen. im assuming prize money is going to be the toughest and biggest stretch to achieve since there is zero interest in this game out side of 1911. once we have an idea of what the lan center in vegas can provide we work one step at a time, when the time comes that we are just money away i think its best that we "secure" positions for the tourny before its booked. kind of pay before you play kind of deal. this way it will ensure attendance and cover our costs so no one is boned. I dont know if its a viable idea but maybe something to be tossed around. I also think vegas is the only option, even being out of the country there is no other cheap places to fly to other than vegas. its not only cheap but very appealing as I would definitely stay past the tourny and hit up some shows. as for myself im more excited about getting to meet some people i havent been able to put faces to and hopefully someone has some good weed to smoke.

Anything I can do to help let me know.
I might be able to get the old uKz squad to come back for a bit and play.
Money-B, Mayo and ShiftyP were always about lanning some dod.
Put me in on that uKz squad coach.

This was my main concern, and why I was suggesting asking for small donations up front. 5-10 bucks isn't enough to guarantee attendance but collectively I think it will certainly help cover some costs if this thing would go to hell. I think it's also going to help show that we're serious about this whole LAN business. I know we're pretty much all centrally located here but if word gets around enough, who knows who you'll see come out of the woodwork.

I don't know, it really depends on what sort of financial support you could throw together. I know I'd be interested (and a couple other people as well) in actually trying to be good at dod again if there was a legitimate tournament worth the time investment, but I seriously doubt that's going to be possible. I mean, although the prize structure was a lot more bottom heavy at cpl, even a 30,000$ tourney was only 1500$ to each player on the winning team. At that point in my life I could have fun spending hours every day playing dod after getting home from work, living in a shitty apartment, and not spending my time working on my career and not really care that it only netted me 1500$. But, for the people who I've talked to that would play now, it really sounded like "well if someone won the lottery and threw like 100k+ at a dod tournament", they would play seriously again. I'd be down to go to vegas and spend a day playing dod, but I don't think I could play seriously.
