I remember the first time I saw someone crouch BAR in a pub..I believe it was North and Toxic from dink..it changed my life. I came from 1.1/1.3b where garand shots were 1 shot kills anywhere on the body so I thought 2.0 blew dick until I discovered the BAR, cause up until that pt there was no reason to do anything but garand or snipe..

Competitively I always looked up to MaX- because he was a patient and smart player who didn't rage, something I could never emulate  . Ninjuh always blew my mind, I still think one of the best players ever, amazing online and even more so on LAN. Also royAMAZING because he could just run around and pick up any gun and dump on you.

If watching a few demos of different people qualifies as "influences", then I guess I could say the following:

Of the several demos I've watched over the years (mostly the ones up until the time of the last CPL), the ones that stick out to me the most were the demos by MaX as well as Beas' CPL 04 finals demo. One demo particular demo that also sticks out to me at the moment is the hltv demo of the 2004 deadboLT-highball playoff match on rr1 in which hb-0xossi kar'd on the axis half, and proceeded to make some of the most stupid-fast shots I've ever seen in a cal-i playoff match.

As far as movie clips go, one clip that I can think of easily is deadbeat's 4-kill streak on evo on sherman (some fotw movie, not sure which one), not necessarily because he kills 4 people right outside their first flag, but because of how fluid and clean his aim was.

Mine are totally different, being a euro, but imma post anyway :D

VERY early, I think it must have been in 1.3beta, in one of my first ever dod matches playing against SKFr on dod_dam (?), I remember their sniper Hannibal killing me hundreds of times but I never saw him once.

A bit later after 3.1b was released, he released his "final chapter", and that was what really inspired me to play rifle (think I was a medium before that). He was just destroying whole teams, he had really fast aim and reactions, and I learned a lot about counter-strafing etc from watching it. In retrospect, in a few clips the opponents are a bit clueless, but there's a fair few clips against spite, *e* etc and those guys were fucking good.

In the early days of 3.1b I also remember playing against SOE (best UK team at the time) on caen, and they held us pretty much at our first flag for the whole game. Their squad was something like Fish, YogitoN, Spetznaz_1, Nimzicki, True, chew1e....I admired those guys and their skill.

Bit later, around the time that 3.1b ended and 1.0 retail came out, a guy called jimerson taught me how to "wiggle" with the garand (strafe back and forth and timing your shots), and I spent a lot of time playing with him, BeZ, zaP, charlie, john etc...this period of DoD was really fun and probably when I was playing the most and getting much better.

Early retail, my clans were starting to be ~top5 in europe, and there were a few players that I admired and motivated me to become better...Lntc, litet_djur, Noir04, Nuker, etc etc, playing teams like PO&Co, SaH, TWR, scarleX, SOE.

"Late" retail (~2004-2005), battling against division wiking and zeroPoint were very fun. Being in u! with nuker, steve, zoanth, jaunty & river, we all pushed each other to get better.

Its ok you can admit that your whole dod life changed when we met each other back in 82nd and my Team UK debut vs the mighty Team Hungary made you think "wow I want to be more like this guy who cusses me on ventrilo constantly and referees rap battles between Charlie and Jimerson with swatch."

Can't believe you didn't even mention DinG. I am telling.

Josh i said max on the first page, i did however forget about ghostider/spartan and the sac guys. EiseN played ns with me in Uevo along with holeman/jdub and a few others, he was insane in that too.

Heres a controversial one, darkhorse!!! Hahahha i still think if he was legit like i believe he was, he was outstanding at just about every weapon.

Sears wrote:Alright, so I'm old as fuck, but I'd figured I'd chime in as well. It's strange, but reading through this has reminded me of just how old I am, in that it's made me remember that I had actually "retired" from DoD before I even went up to Vancoucer, BC for fragmart in August of 2003. Fragmart was supposed to the "swan song" of my 3 year DoD career, as my team (devil^) had died and I was getting ready to leave for college in September. While I've always followed the community and stayed involved in some capacity, I never played with the same competitive mindset as I did before I started college (2003), but yet here I am, over a decade later, still on the interwebs with all you nerds.

So, I got my first shitty hp pc for Christmas in 1999, during my freshman year of high school. My older brother and I had always grown up playing video games, but I was a total noob when it came to PC gaming, as we had only had Apple computers growing up (I was a pro at Space Quest), and Nintendo/Playstation.

The first game that I had a nerd boner for was the original Rainbow Six, and that's really all that I played for the first few months. I loved how realistic the game was, and how immersive the experience was. My brother introduced me to TFC, which was the first game in which I got involved with the competitive community. I was mostly a pubber, but my team played in the first season of CAL. One of the best TFC players went by the name of Blitzkrieg, who I believe played for one of the top TFC clans, Eradication (not sure if my memory is serving me right on the clan name). He was the one who turned me on to DoD (more on him in a bit).

The alpha of DoD was released in April of 2000 (I was 16 years old), and I immediately fell in love with it. I started a pubclan (4th Infantry Division) with a high school friend of mine (devil^fortislupus). 4thID was our thing for the first year or so. My team was wayyyyy into the publan thing, but I got involved with STA as an admin early on, and eventually got my team to join. I had a hard time convincing the rest of my team to start playing in leagues, but I became so enamored with the competitive community that I split off from 4thID and started a new team called The Descendants, which at the time was conglomerate of people who played in the KWI pub. The KWI guys were insanely cool, and did a lot of work for the early competitive community. It was also at this time that I introduced a young Adam August to DoD, later to be known as hb- invast, sorry about that everyone, my bad.

DCS was short lived, and we only played the one season in STA. After that, I moved my way up through backup spots on various main and invite level clans, joining them as they were dying, or moving on to a better opportunity with more playing time (cXt, blacksheep, 45th, a0tp, 63rd), before finally landing on devil^, where I spent the rest of my time as a competitive invite level player.

Anyway, here is my list of nerds. Mine is a little bit different because I learned the game not by emulating people that I didn't know, but from the people that I actually got to play and enjoy the community with. So this isn't so much a list of "top-tier" players as it is a cast of characters from the early days of DoD that were really influential in one way or another in my evolution from a realism pubber to invite level player.

NUDE|SpartaN
Remember that guy Blitzkrieg I was talking about?? Well, he later became NUDE|SpartaN, and since I likely wouldn't have heard about DoD as early as I did if I hadn't followed him in TFC, I owe him for ruining the last ten years of my life with my incurable DoD community addiction. He was also a dominant player, both in TFC and DoD, and watching him play his way up into the invite ranks of DoD was inspiring to me at the time because I had followed him and his team in TFC.

[KWI]Gen.Warbuff
Warbuff was the first shoutcaster for DoD. This was long before twitch or any kind of video streaming, so all streaming was done via winamp radio stations like gamesnet radio. I used to pub in the KWI server when I was still running my pubclan, and Warbuff was awesome about explaining the competitive nuances of the game, the nades spots, and config tips and tricks that I would have never discovered as just a pubclan idiot. So I owe a lot to him and KWI for opening my eyes to the competitive community and playing as a competitive player as opposed to a pubber in general.

sac|h0p
The fatalt1y of early beta DoD. SAC was a Quake clan, but they were virtually unstoppable the first two seasons of STA. h0p was their leader, and was absolutely dominant as a "Light" in the early alphas and betas of DoD. It's also worth mentioning that early DoD was ABSOLUTELY nothing like DoD today. It was basically stick figures running around super fast like it was Quake with instagib rifles. Jump shooting, instaproning, bunnyhopping. It was crazy. Imagine 8v8 battles in the middle of an incredibly dark and pixelated dod_caen. It was basically like that dogfight scene from topgun. The only problem with SAC is that they were total assholes, and they were responsible for 95% of the douchebaggary on the STA forums in the early days. But, they were incredibly good, and I definitely looked up to them in how they played DoD in the early days, coming from a competitive Quake background. SAC actually came to Fragmart 2k3, but they were long done with DoD by then, and only played quake. I did get a chance to talk to them though, and they were really cool guys in person. I tried to convince them to come back to DoD, but h0p said retail was terrible and that the game was dead (lolz jokes on him).

|45th|Eisen
Eisen was huge in my development from a pubber to competitive player. He took me on as a backup sniper on 45th, and let me scrim with them all the time. He probably wasn't the top tier player at the time, but he we really great at helping me to learn and not get rolled when I tried to try out for other teams. He also helped me pick a new alias, since "Shifty" was already taken, so I switched to |45th|Outlaw` after this very early viral video.

lgn|Darkrabbi and 101st|-DeadlySniper
I spent thousands of hours in late night pubs with Ron and Sean in the early days, and they were definitely the kind of players that I tried to emulate. I wish DS would have kept playing longer, but I hear he's a pro streamer these days. After 45th died I was an lgn groupie, and hoping that they would let me join, so I spent a lot of time learning the game just from pubbing with the lgn guys. Ron was great about not being a dick to a relatively unknown player, I remember one night in particular in which an avalanche pub died, and he spent almost 3 hours showing me all the glitches and nade spots that I had no idea existed. When lgn died, Ron and dingphodong left to join devil^, I tried to follow them, but ended up backing up on 63rd until DR and Ding left devil, leaving room for me to join. Thanks for that, bros. It was great getting to meet those guys at Fragmart, along with sparz, stuart, daner, all the others, and hb's configs.

devil^crazygirl
LOLz!! Seriously though, Shelly gets a ton of shit in this community, but you gotta hand it to her for sticking with this community for as long as she has. It's no mystery why dgf has been such a consistent team for so long. She really does care about all of the people on her team, and knows her role as a player. It was really tough trying to make your way up in the community as a relatively unknown player in beta days, especially if you weren't a shit talker (I was a super sweet nice guy). I had been a perennial back up when I joined devil, but Shelly and the rest of the team didn't give a shit. So, you can poke fun of her all you want (as I do plenty), but the butterfly effect is very real, and it's likely that I would have quit DoD and never been an invite player, CAL admin, or ever brought back 1911 if not for Shelly just being nice. So, props, fa sho.

devil^prayformojo and devil^pre|ude
Mikey and Mike were fucking awesome. They were great teammates during the devil dyas, and in my opinion, two of the most underrated rifles of the late beta era. I can't put into words how much I learned about the game from playing with and watching these two dudes. Wish they still played.

mTs - Ghostrider
The best heavy I've ever seen (even better than Profiction). He somehow found a way to play post-retail heavy like it was early beta, and watching him roll everyone in person at fragmart was incredibly impressive, especially because he ended up being such a nice a personable guy, unlike the rest of mTs which was mostly quiet azn kids and that Unsurreal dude who looked kinda like that Orin guy from Parks and Rec, but a little chubbier and way more insecure.

Hn
Last but certainly not least. Most of your guys lists are really good, and mine would have been much the same if I was going just by the best players that I looked up to. But like many of you have stated, I still feel like Hn was the best player I've ever seen, and I still watch his final chapter movie fairly often. It's really representative of a different era of DoD, and the type of skill that was required to play at that level. Of all the other elite players that we've had over the last decade, I don't know that any of them eclipse Hn in my eyes as the best DoD nerd ever.

9,896 characters later, gg nerds.

ASnVVlFmwXc
Aww Eric!! The funny thing is, I was going to edit your post and add myself! It would have been a little different from what you wrote. lol.

I have to admit devil^Outlaw was a great sniper. Our entire team was good and a lot of fun. devil^prayformojo probably was one of the most underrated players of all time. Great guy.

I agree. I played a couple seasons with darkhorse and hb. I never thought he cheated and to this day I still don't believe he did. He actually hit me up on steam not to long ago from a random name and said hey it me darkhorse! Also another guy alot of people probably don't remember but was big, scary and known for his crazy ass voice. My boy tellah! That guy was fucking nuts, i mean literally nuts. We are probably lucky he actually ended up land dodging all those years.

Seems sears and I were on a couple teams together back in the day,I just cant remember everyone, but hn was the best player of all time in my eyes. I got the oppurtunity to play with him in a World dod all star game back in 3.1. Let me just say I learned everything from watching him and thats when I did my sniping in 3.1. Remember back then there was no walking sniper and hn perfected the art of 3.1 sniping. How I miss those days!

I did like tellah, hilariously deep voice, and overall a good guy. I think it was like 9thSS that he and a few guys were from that came over to hb.

With that i think benjamin skwirut is probably who i most respected as a leader. He was always chill, mature and smart. Also, alpha_male was one of the best tommy/unters ive played with, he was very smart. I also remember mako and daner from cosa/ilan being solid consistent players, varm was great early on, he lost a step by the time he joined us in deadbolt.

Honorable mention(if anyone remembers him): nick mow, kid had the most frusterating style of play ever and never took anything serious, if he had he would of been ten times as good as he was.

I feel like such a dork for typing this but fuck it.
I haven't played nearly as long as many of you guys but back in the pub days it was some awesome guy named "worst dod player ever" and some Diesel guy.
When I tried out TPG a couple of seasons ago I was blown away by the skills of most guys around but the people that I tried to learn from was jarrod, toxinator, jaggon, ryanemo and frank.

Like I said, when you've been around as long as I have, there are way too many people to list. Nobody really mentioned any of the old ilan guys like Zypher, a-mob, v-arm and a few others. I remember we (nude) were always doing battle with ilan and there nade glitching in 3.1, those were the good ole days.

For me it was always Ackpath for rifling, Marshall_D for sniping, and Eckman for my heavying. I would never say I was great at this game, but these guys really helped me step it up to a level where I could basically hold my own at any time when I was going from a CAL-O pubstar up to CAL-I/M in the CPL era

None of you have influenced me. That is most likely the reason I'm still terrible after 10 years of this game. Nice to see y'all "top" players need to ballride and jerk each other off on 1911 rather than just vent.

I forgot this when I was writing up that earlier post...

I remember watching a demo of eckman rifling bridge on Anzio in shockwave vs gamewyze. He used the lowest sensitivity I had ever seen and I definitely switched to a much lower sensitivity after watching that. I realized that you could be much more consistent with super low sensitivity and you just made up for it by doing a lot of work to turn around and by always looking in the right spots.

f3nder - Almost none of you will remember him, but he got me into this game. He taught me the basics of how to play and set my rates correctly. Before my first ever, which was on rr2, he sent me a demo of pandemic vs. ukz playing that map. He was later cal-banned, but I still maintain his innocence. After the cal-ban, he aliased on mtp and taught me a lot about dod. As much as he complained, he had a knack for figuring out what needed to change to make our team win.

Surge and Ham? and the other people that hung out in their vent - When I was just a pubber, surge and koreanknife were always way faster and had better awareness, so that really motivated me to get better and helped my reaction time. When I joined the [DOS] OGL team, I was a heavy, and Ham? taught me how to heavy middle before my first ever OGL match on donner. After that, Surge taught me all of the nades I needed to know for Harrington mountain and the spots where people would be camping. A while later, after I played a season or so in CAL, I 12-manned with Surge about a million times (I think it was shortly before the time that people started thinking I cheated) over the course of two weeks and he gave me a ton of pointers and showed me how to play.

Bleargh - I watched a few of his demos to learn how to play routes that I struggled with. I also thought it was pretty awesome when shortly after watching a demo of him karring mountain on harrington, he accused me of cheating when I garanded mountain against him in a 12-man.

Dorito - I also watched a few of his demos to learn how to play harrington, rr2, and chemille. I still play like an idiot compared to him, but I definitely learned a lot from the demos.

Mainly players that still play today, but most of these guys would 12 man or scrim with my brother NoGood back in 06-07 and I'd constantly watch. These guys have taught me how to play this game even if I am still bad as fuck.

I remember Fender, he would just carbine in 12 mans all the time when I played with him.

Yeah, he was pretty bitter about his cal-ban at that point. The only route he would play seriously was railcar and that was because it was easy to make people angry. Haha, I bet Pat remembers that scrim where f3nder sat there for like 13 minutes eating a sandwich, prone outside of rail.

Mainly players that still play today, but most of these guys would 12 man or scrim with my brother NoGood back in 06-07 and I'd constantly watch. These guys have taught me how to play this game even if I am still bad as fuck.
Lets be honest here for a second. Your biggest DoD influence is Super Simple Wallhack, l0ry.exe, and LEIS.exe.

jaz & Craftydus - These two were just the most famous of the absolutely insane class of lights that topped the American dod scene for a very long time but they were all absolutely explosive. Aim, reaction time, sense of the game, flashyness, bling, you name it these 2 had it. To this day I still watch all of their movies from time to time to keep some of their more creative play style tactics fresh in my mind.
Whoa! Thanks!!

My biggest influences and people who got me into this game were...

ward - When I started playing this game I use to pub with him and he would give me tips all the time <3ward
milo - Taught me a bunch of things about how to play smart, good nades, and most importantly how to be a team player. <3milo
stile- Pretty much every team I've ever been on I was on with stile. <3stile
paintball- This guy is the most retarded player and doesn't call a thing, but he is a lot of fun to play with and a great friend. <3justin
cableguy- When I first started getting into this game I use to scrim all the time with Jordan, he is an amazing player and a good mentor.<3jordan
wallu- I am stunned when I watch this guy play, amazing player. <3wallu
analog- I have always watched his movies and they have always been my favorite, really good player. <3 analog
hobbler- Taught me a lot as well in both DoD and Counter-Strike. <3hobbler

Well, that's enough ass kissing for one day.

Hihi.
My role model is a player that 99% players dont know these days. He didnt really play 1.3 at all, just a few months when it was published. He was only Team Finland player(as far as i remember) who wasnt from eclipse/spite or troopers in 3.1. He played for team K-18 (Fi. team). I would say that team would have been nothing without him, because he alone could turn game around. He was R_West, actually my brother.
2nd guy who'se movie i couldnt watch enough was Hn... final chapter.

JIZZ!!!!

i didnt go check to see if i mentioned you in my initial post or not but, you my friend were probably the european player i spent the most time admiring in hltvs and demos and all 6 of your movies. i actually have been on a noobstyle kick for the last few days again haha found them all on the archive on this website and was watching them for nostalgia sake

for those of you not familiar with jizz, he was essentially the deadbeat of european day of defeat throughout all of retail. one half of a massively dominant rifle combo (mostly playing with dw, arguably the best euro team in retail dod, rivaled only by the better lineups of unplugged/Begrip!) but one that got a little less publicity or recognition over here across the pond because he kept his movies down to only official match footage and therefore they didnt always have some of the absurd footage vs pub clans or mixes etc. but jizz is definitely one of the greatest retail rifles of all time. go check out the noobstyle movies, goodtimesindw.avi and i believe there was one more called superbeast. he also had a duo movie with Jaunty but half of it consists of knife and spade footage which, while entertaining, may not show his amazing abilities quite as clearly haha good to see you on here, jizzi. i got to play against you on donner last season (NZ vs helterskelter) and you got a few movie clips i keep hoping to see put into one final jizz movie. if you happen to have a bunch of demos saved up and you want someone to make you a high quality movie after this season, let me know! ive really wanted to broaden my horizons and make one of my favorite euros a movie (whether you or paul or jaunty or any of the other guys on the friends team. could even make a euro superplayers type of movie to go along with our NA movie called mutiny)

(yeah im ball riding, so what)

wow nice to hear jaggon :D Im also glad that you are one of those rare guys that actually noticed that my movies includes 90% official games and those games against the top 5-7 euro teams back then. I didnt really see the glory putting 10 kill streaks vs opponents that didnt really shoot back.
I actually played against you on railroad in semi finals, I was "joni" if you didnt know.
Anyway I've been thinking of making a movie of this season, but it would be cool if someone made it for me. So I keep it in mind ! 8-)

P.S. The "superbeast" movie is called riflelovin. It seems to be in the movie archive with that name. short movie.

Damn bro way to totally disregard my comment in the other thread like a week ago where I ball rode you FIRST by confiding in you, saying that I used to touch myself to Good Times in dw. So much for being best friends like I had hoped.

#1 Hn learned a lot playing against and with Hn. Not only tactics, but the importance of communication and making quick detailed calls. I took what I learned from him and evolved it into my own. Some aspects I feel like I paved the way for dod was sound whoring. No one used sound the way I did back in 2.0-3.1. Anyone who sound whores these days. You're welcome. I also used that in making calls after I died. I would and still do switch between players on deathcam and make important calls so the person playing doesn't have to make the call. And also I listen in for the person and warn them of where the person is based purely off sound.

I learned to heavy from Spartan and really just playing a lot of dod against nude, ve, 101st, Nt...I learned better playing against people to evolve my play style...rather than their demos. When I came back to dod 2 years ago, dod's gameplay had changed and got a lot faster....which I love. I had to adapt my style to compete with the top players now. Some for example...tox, Ryan, Jrod, stile, shogun. When I started back these guys destroyed me. Ask stile or shogun how shitty I was when I started back. But I 12manned anytime these guys were playing and always went their routes against them until I adapted.

Whatever bro, that movie was ridiculous and had some of the best frags I'd ever seen along with the craziest reaction times. I saw it on Youtube after you posted last week. Still amazing.
