Fix kirk's computer.

There I was minding my own business when my computer done brokened. Here's what happened:

1) Monitor randomly went black as though it had been unplugged.
2) I shut down and restart - picture comes back.
3) Within a few seconds, monitor is black again.
4) When I turn the monitor off and then back on again, it works. After about 2 seconds, however, it goes black again.

I turned off the computer and left it off for ~30 minutes because it felt warmish. I also disconnected all the monitor cables and reconnected. Still nothing.

So the monitor turns on, but quickly turns black as though it's being unplugged.

No other computers in the house where I can test the monitor.

Ideas, go!

if you have a newish TV, hook the tower up to it using the same cables to narrow down the problem to the actual monitor. Then buy a new monitor!

youll probably want to find someone to snag a spare monitor from to try it, like others suggested (and obviously) it could be your monitor. i had a similar problem once when my video card burnt up.

i was having something similar to this happening to me a while ago. i found out my video card was somehow coming loose from my motherboard. try taking your video card off then re-inserting it onto your motherboard.

I had this happen to me during CAL-I playoffs and had to play on a laptop on a couch with a borrowed monitor on a coffee table. I had to get a new screen. :[

No other cables. It'll go black before and after bios. Immediately after the monitor shows picture, it'll go black. I'll turn it off and then back on again (post-bios), and same thing will happen. I can do this 100 times before or after bios and it'll be the same process: show a picture for a few seconds, then go black as though it's been unplugged.

Scorch - Do you have to replace the entire monitor, then? Or just a part within the monitor.

I was just reading someone asking the same question. Depends on the how much your monitor is worth, but replacing the backlight is pretty expensive so it's probably better to just buy new if your monitor is already past warranty.

you know pretty much always you have like 5 years on a CRT even with running high refresh rates.

the crt i had since like 2001 finally died early last year after running basically that whole time at 100hz. used to share my comp with 2 other people constantly so it never even got a break. love me some viewsonic.

2. Unplug your power cable from your power supply & Unplug your DVI/AGP Cable from your PC.

Leave power on to your monitor (At this point your monitor should say " No cable Link, or Cable Undetected " )

3. Remove the side panel from your computer.
4. BOND yourself by touching your case to d-energize your components.
5. Carefully remove your video card, and then re-install it.

6.. Re-put everything back together/ and hope for luck

2) Basically to ground yourself and release any static electricity before touching a hardware component

It could be your video card, it could be the monitor.. until you have one or the other to test, it's hard to say exactly what it is.

So just touch the side of the case, then deal with the graphics card (without touching anything else, I'm assuming, like the carpet), then re-test?

Correct, try taking the graphics card out and putting it back in. Also verify that the fan on the card is working.

By your description, it sounds like the inverter or power supply of the monitor has gone bad. Typically the backlight will show signs of dying prior to going out (ie slight flickering or slow in getting bright), but it's still a possibility.

1 . If you unplug the monitor from your computer however leave power to it and turn it on, the screen should still be active.. unless its dead, then there will be no picture.

2. The VideoCard might have failed, when a VC fails they produce the same issues you are getting as well.

These steps are telling me which components are not functioning properly.

The GPU should be sending signal to the monitor whether it's on or not right? Doesn't sound like a GPU at all if the monitor screens up briefly when he powers it back on and then goes black.

You could test that more easily by plugging in to the integrated GPU on your motherboard (if it has one).

similar situation happened to me recently kirkland. removed my vid card and air dusted that shit and it works like new again. if a vid card fan does not operate at a certain speed then the vid card will turn off. try it brah. <3

If a videocard fries it won't necessarily still be sending a signal. One of the computers we use at work had an ATI card fry in it and the monitor would just stay in power save mode when you turned the computer on.

Okay, even when the monitor isn't plugged in it does the same thing. I'll turn it on when it's not plugged into the PC itself, and it will show a dark screen with a box at the top left that says, "Analog" - after 2 seconds the whole screen turns black.

ALSO I had the graphics card replaced roughly a year ago by a shop, so I'm kind of thinking/hoping I don't have to get that done again.

Taking the monitor to a shop tomorrow to have it plugged in and checked out. They said they'll do it for free.

Shouldn't it be on Digital or HDMI depending on your setup? try pressing the <-/source button on your monitor if you have one, to switch it. I bought a new monitor years ago because of that I thought it was broken lol. Maybe that's not your problem I didnt read everything in this thread, but good luck!
