After the Vegas LAN

I understand the upcoming Vegas LAN will be the last that 1911 will host. So is this the last planned DoD LAN ever or would anyone be up for trying to set others up in the future depending on the turnout in Vegas? If the turnout is good enough, getting some PC gaming peripheral/accessory makers to sponsor shouldn't be too hard. Even a site like Newegg could be an easy potential sponsor. I'd be down to help out setting it up. I live on Long Island and I know back in the day when I first started playing this game in high school (when it was actually popular) I had missed out on one that was held in Manhattan (could be a possible future event location). I guess I'm just posting to see just how dead this game is or if the community would be willing to stay involved and keep these sorts of events going from time to time because I know i'd be willing to participate/help. Could have people stream it to twitch.tv from spec for others who can't make the LAN to watch. Could be fun.

first off vegas hasnt happened yet. if it is successful and thats a big if, its lacking a big sponsorship to garner any interest in the gaming world. if u can manage a big name sponsor than a future is possible i would think, but i highly doubt anyone but valve would even shed an ounce of interest in something like DOD. and lastly no one and i mean no one is going to watch us play a very bad game on twitch.

your optimism is great but if it wasnt for sears there would be 0 chance at vegas, so unless your willing to do it all on your own as he has than go for it but you need to be just as realistic as you are optimistic before you can dream of a revival past what we already have for DOD.

Oh yea I understand. Definitely didn't post with the expectation that this game is popular/an event like this is easy to set up. I really posted to ask knowing that in general people obviously have fun at things like this and just to sort of gauge community interest or if mostly everyone seems okay with just never doing anything like this again. I suppose any sponsorship interest to be shown would be determined by the potential turnout, regardless of the game.

There are too many nerds out there that like this game for it to die completely. My gut call tells me that there will be another attempt at a LAN after Vegas but unless it's held at some place that's cheap and convenient for everyone you'll almost definitely have a poor turnout. Exhaustive research pretty much told us that Vegas was the only feasible place to hold a LAN tournament of decent size. Have to agree with nunz, don't invest too much thought into this until we see what happens at 2014 Vegas LAN.

i slightly disagree. i dont think any company would care for turnout with a game like DOD that is 10 years past its prime. If anything it may peak a bit of interest in remaking it as CSGO has, but that does not guarantee future success.

I guess I just looked at it like this: if whatever acceptable turnout is possible and companies like Newegg, Logitech, Razer, etc. could benefit from advertising to said turnout regardless of what game (or games) they are playing since their products appeal to anyone who games on PC and not just a particular game's worth of players, then they shouldn't have a problem sponsoring? I'm sure there is way more to it than that but I figured surely that must factor in.

I wish I could attend the Vegas event. Would definitely be fun but being in NY and having to be home for frequent doctor appointments on a regular basis I don't know if I could schedule around it. And plus I'd assume most teams are situated now anyways, no? Wouldn't want to pay my way all the way there as a backup/substitute/"free agent" for existing teams with no guarantee to play =\

well im definitly not going to this vegas lan with any expectation to win, with that i do plan to party with a bunch of nerds, find some drugs get wasted and snort a few lines off some escorts that who ever is rooming with me will enjoy (hi dave! lol). As for teams I dont think many people have anything too concrete atm as its still a year away.

If I were you I would do my best to just get down there. There has to be a way for you to get away from your appointments for a weekend, im not trying to assume your condition isnt anything serious but that a vacation i would imagine would only make a person feel better even if its only a week.

this is really a one time thing from what i can tell and i truly believe it is all it can be unless it becomes some kind of annual nerdfest for us all.

Thread is about 14 months early, but to answer your question, no, I don't see 1911/myself organizing another DoD LAN after Vegas LAN 2014, and I see the project as more of swan song "one last LAN" for the community.

I'll continue to host 1911, and would consider taking on more projects/LANs in the event that DoD ever gets another update, or the community trends toward a new game, but I think most people are excited for Vegas LAN with the understanding that it's likely to be the last one.

You know, when I read through the LAN event page I skimmed through it quick and sort of just assumed it was going to be this summer and my brain never registered that it said "2014" lol. my bad I should have read more carefully, and yea now I feel retarded because the LAN is over a year away. Sorry about that haha. simple mistake, but thanks for the sarcasm/attitude there crafty. hmm....will definitely try to figure out a way to come to Vegas next summer then. LAN tournies are fun regardless of how big of a deal it's made out to be, whether it be for money or just for fun. just as a general statement then since the LAN is so far off, the community should keep them going regardless of who organizes them. tournies are a good time.
