I recently made my first big boy watch purchase. I didn't do the walk when I graduated college because my close family was overseas or far away and the actual date landed on a Monday so I didn't want to have close friends take off work etc. (Ok I have no friends)

So I wanted to get something signifying my "accomplishments" and get a very simple nice looking watch.

I got the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 7 Twin time Automatic watch 39 mm

I went with the twin time because my first "real" job has me in Abu Dhabi so having two different times zones with out a complex dial is nice, I knew I wanted a date wheel, and a leather strap, (I went with alligator)

I could of gotten the watch 20-30 % cheaper near mint "used" but I wanted my first watch to be mine and only mine... cheesy? But who cares my choice.

So any of you nerds into watches (timepieces, if you're a prick)?

I love watches as long as they're done right. I for one don't like some of the gaudy ass one's I see people wear, but Polak you definitely made a good choice with the one you bought.

I always wanted to know why bother on spending small fortunes on watches as if we don't have cellphones... I understand people using it for nostalgia sake but I'd never buy a tissot or swatch. It's not about price but rather the point on using a watch as big as a man's wrist.

There are many reasons why, but it's mostly for the aesthetic. For instance you can get a ten dollar Casio watch and it will tell the same, if not better, time as a Rolex. However there is a difference of having a mechanical watch vs an electrical. There is far more craft involved in an automatic mechanical watch (self winding). Having multiple gears for various panels increases the complexity and craft. Most watches are not hand made, but the engineering behind it is remarkable to me.

There are many ways people choose to express themselves. Clothes, tattoos, etc. Everyone's different and I find myself captivated towards watches and I really can't explain to you why. Maybe because I'm color blind and I SUCK at dressing myself. Maybe Kirk will know the physiology effects... But wearing this thing has kept a smile on my face.

And... you don't have to dig into your pockets to check the time from your cellphone.

I would eventually get to "gaudy ass" watches in the future when I make more money and I would def buy them used. Being that this was my first watch I wanted to go with more "class."

Didn't even know lolz. I'm not really into watches, the watch got more of a sentimental value to me, more than a "fashion" item. Same as i wear a golden chain(a very thin chain), sentimental.

Also, i don't like "thin" watches, as i bought one before, i like the "thicker". I kinda like to feel the weight on the wrist.

Well, you got my attention brah coz I believe we always need to do what make us happy. If you're truly happy using these kind of watches, then who am I to even consider questioning? I'm not saying this with sarcasm or anything related but reading your reply made me have a little epiphany on what is important for us to be happy. While I don't think they don't fit needs I do understand that what's good for me might not work necessarily for you and so on. And not having to get the cellphone out from the pocket is another good reason indeed. Anyway, I'm happy for your first watch bought, congrats!

Now I'm not making fun of you, this is simply an observation and I find it funny because I was reading about fossil and that watch specifically.

Fossil, Gucci, etc are watches that make "Fashion watches" and I'm quoting an article that actually hyper links your fossil watch, the Grant Twist Stainless Steel Watch.

I never said it had great movement, components, etc. In my personal experience I have 3 fossil watches and they are reliable. I'm still young and don't have money to buy an amazing watch that you older folk wear with a simple look, dont get me wrong I love a simple watch with a single dial but some niggas cant pull off the look. And honestly I live in La and have only seen a handful of people that actually wear fossil watches so I'm not sure how it can be considered trendy or "fashiony??". That list is outdated, the only watches people wear now are Michael Kors and G-shocks. I may have spent more money than its worth but I trust the brand. I buy a watch based on how it looks and how long it will tick until it blows up, when I get rich and famous from my Dod career I will look into watches based on mechanics over $500.

I tend to buy watches that won't conduct electricity / get destroyed while working. I have a Fossil laying around but I don't usually wear it. I had a Timex watch that (while cheap) lasted through two deployments overseas in a variety of environments.

I can't live without them. Always had a watch. So now I can't get used to reading time on a cellphone (I tried).

Got 3. Nothing fancy. I have no money to spend on these (or anything else really)
I pay the $100+ (< $200) price to get a watch that does not break. My oldest I've had for 12 years now.

Yes you can, there are various straps you can get.

Leather straps are more dressy and classy than bracelets, and as mentioned above, are a requirement for dress watches, and that alone has ensured their popularity. Many casual watches look good on leather as well, though. Leather straps vary in price a great deal, with some top-end brands and styles costing hundreds of dollars. Also I got a

Dropping the leather strap and just trying to order the time piece (which you can only do online after it is used I believe) can have cost drop significantly. I think you could get the time piece alone around 1800-2000 bucks if it's near mint condition.

I couldn't find a site online where you can order just the timepiece of the watch. Check with a jeweler

So just people understand why this watch costs 20,000 dollars and for one to appreciate the engineering behind it. The fly back and the counter increases the value of the watch tenfold because it's adding more complexity to such a confound space. Pretty cool fucking shit

Gshock makes great watches and I believe are sponsors for the military or something? I'm not sure on that one.

I tried really hard to find this watch. A couple mins of search and going through the catalogs and I couldn't find anything similar. There are replicas that have the moon and sun theme for 150 to 300 bucks. Even though it's a "fake" it might still have some value, but above all else, it has personal value!

This is true, but it's a site that makes and has all the information on the watch. Maybe I should of taken the time to take a whole bunch of pictures with different angles and then explained the whole thing in writing? Either way you can find out the price of the watch by just posting pictures of it.

I only wear watches when I dress nice for work, events, weddings, etc. I really like watches, but don't really have the money to go crazy on price. Plus you can find decent looking watches for around $100 on sale.

I currently wear the Pulsar PF8331 which i got on sale for $40

I also have an Invicta 2876 which I paid $60 for back in 06

don't mean to flame you, of course, I've always felt that way about e.g people spending 200£ on a t-shirt in harrods or something. i'm just curious about what proportion of the price of that watch is justified in terms of functionality vs it being a fashion or status symbol ?

I have something like this one (http://www.longines.com/watches/heritag ... 795.4.78.2), I couldn't find the exact one I got on their website, but it looks almost exactly like this. The only difference is that the thing that displays the day is next to the 3 on my watch, unlike this one which is by the 6. Mine also came with a brown leather strap, but I replaced it with a different strap that I think looks better, which my grandfather gave me.

I can definitely relate to how you feel though, I got that watch myself last year, and I was happy beyond belief. Granted it didn't cost me 3, 000 dollars, but it wasn't cheap, for me at least.

When I got it, I got teased so much, too. Saying that I paid too much for a watch that an old man would buy. Screw that, this watch has exactly what I was looking for.
