Finals Map Selection Process

Post by Tin Bad »

Finals Map Selection Steps:

Teams are to use matchcomm to handle picking maps/banning maps.

1. The team with the upper seed (Home Team) will post in matchcomm with the map they don't want to play/want to ban.

2. Then team with the lower seed (Away Team) replies with the map they don't want to play/want to ban.

3. The home team will then pick the first map and post the selected map in matchcomm.

4. Teams will also need to schedule a time to play their matches using matchcomm.

For Round 2:
This time the lower seed team (Away Team) will choose the map and post their map choice in match comm.

For Round 3(If needed):
The upper seed (Home Team) will choose the map again and post the map in matchcomm.

Maps to choose from/Ban:
1. dod_lennon_b2
2. dod_railroad2_b2
3. dod_anzio
4. dod_harrington
5. dod_chemille
6. dod_railroad
7. dod_donner
8. dod_solitude_b2

Should make round 3 a third party choice. If both teams win one round, why let one of those teams get the advantage in the final final?

Just a thought.

Tiebreaker should be something totally random like dod_hill_classic or dod_cherbourg.

Is there a deadline on posting what the first map is? Seems kind of silly if you let the teams choose a map and practice it all week and then post it right before the match and have the away team do the same instead of posting both and practicing both.

I honestly think we should just do it in the server when we're about to play. Worked well enough for the Quake duel tourneys I've participated in. I mean, you don't find out what heroes your opponent is banning/picking in Dota 2 until you're about to play either.

I mean, selfish me, I want to actually practice the maps that will be played with the 6 people that will be playing in the match. This is DoD in 2013 and I'm not on gskill or thunder... we haven't scrimmed any of the available maps with the 6 people who will be in the server on Sunday and there's no way we're going to get to play all the maps between now and then even if we wanted to.

I don't see how that's relevant to what I was saying, in fact I think you're reinforcing my point. If you need to bootcamp select maps to win then banning/picking is even more of a strategic process for both teams involved. It introduces a bit of metagame into DoD where there wasn't any before.

Again, I have to single out Dota 2 captains mode as the ideal setup here. There are a _lot_ of tactical decisions being made there and it provides a _lot_ of the initial excitement and discussion for the upcoming match. Honestly I think even the map pool should be bigger. Suppose THUNDER spends all week no-lifing Aleutian or some shit and drops that bomb on us when we're expecting a less silly map. That might be interesting.

Scorch, both of our teams have already selected the maps we wish to deny, I believe we have already posted what map we want or we will be doing so tonight. hopefully you guys will do the same and you will have lots of time to practice.

I think Dan found his CPL Birkenstocks or something, he keeps asking me to hook him up with dat vegas lan money to put the team up in a bootcamp hotel to prepare for the match.

I'd consider it if I hadn't spent so much sabotaging CleanDoD...

I don't think there's anything interesting about practicing and playing a dumb map and coming up with gimmick strats. I remember thunder coming up with some shitty gimmick rush strategy on lennon for a LAN tournament back when no one played that map and beating us for 2 spawns until we figured it out, then they held out and won by like half a cap. It's objectively bad for determining the better team and it's not fun for spectators to watch.

I think that in a world where all the teams scrim all the maps, then the ban/pick idea would be a good way to play a finals because all the teams would have practiced on all the maps and it would really show who the better team was based on their strategies and tactics. Reality is that even if I wanted to scrim aleutian, the only team that would play us is that hypothetical thunder nerd squad and if you banned out that map in your matchup then there would be no one to practice against. Same goes for like 50% of the map pool. Then the finals becomes "who came up with the better gimmicks on shitty maps that no one plays."

I thought it was getting decided by which team has the highest monitor tan skin coverage area (MTSCA)?

Hmmm, feels like MTSCA should be some kind of official metric around here.

I'll look into that.
