When is this Dan? I'd be interested in trying out something a little more structured, but we should probably play a couple games together so you can know how bad I am.

Out of the three upcoming games you mentioned, I think Dirty Bomb has the most potential.

Shootmania has already had a lot of money thrown at it, but the casual interest just isn't there. It's fun to watch for a little bit but it gets pretty old quickly as it's such a simple game. I lost complete interest in it after scorch/DR etc stopped playing. I still have a friend that plays but I haven't watched him since the IPL 5? qualifiers from last year. Last time I talked to him about Shootmania, he was thinking of moving to some 3rd person FPS that was coming out because he said the game had no future. Maybe someone will mod it to be better/more complex in the future, but I don't have much hope for it.

2GD's game, while it will probably be good if it ever gets released, again, probably won't have much casual interest. The dueling FPS style is too hard for 12 year old CoD idiots.

Dirty Bomb - you have to remember that these guys also put out Brink a couple years ago. I hopped on the Brink train early and while it was decent, the completely awful release really hurt the game. They released the game with it not working on ATI/AMD video cards... how is that even possible? They were also extremely slow in updating the game (balance issues) and it pretty much died within the first month. While these guys have a background in "esports" FPS titles, I think they just lucked out that Wolf:ET was played competitively (kind of like CS/DoD). I thought Quake Wars was a shitty Battlefield 2142 clone and didn't enjoy it (although it had a competitive community for a while). Watching how they handled Brink does not give me a lot of faith in Dirty Bomb. However, supposedly Bethesda pushed them to release the game early and with Dirty Bomb they will be the ones publishing the game so it may be better. With Dirty Bomb, depending on how they distribute it, it has the potential to be the #1 casually played FPS (free to play, so the LoL of FPS). If a lot of people are playing it, a competitive "esport" should naturally follow (not forced like Shootmania). I'll have some free time in the summer so I may pay the $120 for the alpha access (lol) to check it out.

*bumping old thread* saw an interesting (fairly recent) interview with gabe newell with the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21677119

dunno if americans can watch it but at around 3:10 the interviewer is asking about HL3 and portal 3 etc, and gabe says "we're always looking at all of our games, even ricochet and day of defeat, to think about how we could evolve them given the changing gaming landscape" :O DAY OF DEFEAT 3: CONFIRMED

Also 2gd hosts a show on twitch about gaming and does casting for dota, used to be a pro quake player, hes got a pretty big following, his game will take off at first just based on his fanbase.

Dirty Bomb (they've changed the name to Extraction) just went into closed beta. Anyone else have a beta key? Looking for someone to break this down with.

Day of Defeat is the best game ever made since chess.
Definitely best movement by any game hands down.

And most FPS's now are just made to be "popular to the masses."
Even when DoD went from 3.1 to whatever came next, it was done to a lesser degree.

I've fiended on all the Cod's aswell as dod, max prestiges in MW2 B.O MW3 B.O2, and its awesome but the killstreaks and perks are fuckin gay. There's ALWAYS one cheap class setup that's better than the rest and anyone with half a brain can use it and go 60-10.

Plus the "Tactical Insertion" can be used to spawn wherever you want and 2 nerds can hide at the back of a map and "boost" eachother to their killstreaks by killing each other over and over.

All those CoD's and FPS's are ruined by the faggots that play them. Those games are made so that really bad kids can still do good and that's why its pointless to play, if you wanna play with some type of purpose.

DoD is the ultimate level playing field. The guy who wins most the battles is the guy who plays alot and shoots real good. Not some faggot thats got 12 dogs running around that take 5 bullets to kill. But truly it's TPG and league play that keeps me personally coming back. The teams, the player personalites, the never ending drama. It's just flat out fun do be a part of.

As long as there is 6 players on 2 teams i will play in TPG.

(Being from the greater Toronto area I know kicken n milo will understand this.)

I know there was a thread that was about this exact subject a while back. I didn't read all of this thread so forgive me if im repeating another persons veiws.

I think scorch hit it right on the dot as far as games that are made to be competetive.

I still think the big problem is that companies do not produce games to be competetive. They produce games that allow the weekend warrior to play and still have fun no matter of the skill of players in the server.

Take Call of duty for example. Call of duty has gone to a once very bataish CS style game to a game that rewards you for dying multiple times in a row. Kill streaks, weapon advancements, rankings, death streaks, perk pakages are all made to lower the skill cieling in the game.

The ammount of people that play call of duty once a week far outwieghs the people that are willing to learn the physics, weapons, cone of fire, aiming etc that would play competetivley. Because of I think game dev's have found a way to keep the average person focused on loging on once a week and that is the more the play the better they will get no matter of the play style.

In conclusion I think competetive gaming is dead because the market is for the millions that enjoy playing games just to play them and not to the few who chose to master and minipulate them.

Hope I made sense.

scorch- wrote:There are so many things about DoD's gameplay that make it the best team fps game. The competitive mode (domination) is just the most natural team/war-game mode... frag to control the map, get points for controlling the map. The weapon aim/recoil system offers very subtle balancing features... if they removed the damn cone of fire and used recoil and damage to balance the weapons instead, it would be a ridiculously good system. I mean, the beauty of the recoil system is that you can make a heavy a "short-medium range" weapon by forcing the player to use a high sensitivity to control the recoil and make their aim naturally less accurate at long range. You don't *need* a cone of fire to do that for you. The gun can shoot 100% straight if you balance the recoil and damage properly. The movement system where you can shoot while counter-strafing adds a huge skill ceiling to the game, but I really think the penalty for movement should be huge recoil (or delayed bolt) instead of randomness.

I liked counter-strike a lot, but I think DoD is a better game for the same reason that futbol > football. CS is a game of executing very specific plays. Experience plays a role later in rounds, but a lot of rounds are won and lost by flashbangs and headshots to start the round. DoD requires your team to have a strong overarching strategy and experience executing that strategy including map- and situation-specific tactics. The free-flowing nature of the game rewards teams where every player understands the game much more than cs where you need 1-2 strat/decision-makers who understand the game and 2-3 players who need to be able to just headshot. You don't win a map in dod on one round, you win it on hundreds (or thousands) of opportunities to make good decisions and nice shots.
What a nerd.

FPS is dead because it's the same games that did well reskined with another number on the cover every year. There needs to be a new fresh game to revive the competitive scene.

I have to agree with a lot of posts about dod. the movement, speed and style of gameplay puts games these days to shame.

I was always partial to the Unreal Tournaments and TFC (team fortress classic) myself. The new TF blows. You could see the skill gap when playing those. I never played official matches but between friends and clans I was in we played plenty of scrims. not to mention a few years back when Unreal Black Edition came out for a free weekend I didn't seem to lose touch rolling the new kids in FFA and the game felt like it did back in the the 2002 days. I forget which was my favorite, 02 or 03 or something. whichever was before the laser sniper rifle.

Nowadays you won't see cool shit that raises the skill ceiling like combos. The plasma ball / beam combo was epic and one of my favorite things about UT. Unfortunately, higher skill cap = more newbs not playing because they are getting shit on = less sales for games. It's all about catering to baddies now.

This is 100% true and say if valve made a awesome version of dod with dx11 eyecandy etc it still wouldnt take off cause it would be too hard skill wise for new gen gamers who wanna play w+fire run spam fps games like mw2/3/ghosts etc.

I have been playing a few BF4 scrims and watch streams from ESL matches and there's just one class and weapon you see.

Assault with the ACE 23

Because it's the 'best gun in the game'. In BF3 we had the same thing, people only used the M16A3 because it was the best(and easiet) gun to use.
Playing BF3 got quite boring, 'another guy with a M16A3 with 100000000x Service stars(You gain 1 server star for every 100kill with a weapon)

Thanks to the awful netcode/hit registration in Bf4 it can be impossible to snipe and the LMGs are AWFUL when hipfiring and on medium/long distances.
The Engineer class have such a weak role in 5on5 Domination. What are you supposed to do with mines, RPGs and other rockets when there's no vehicles and aircraft?

DICE definately need to work on the game to make it better for competitive gameplay.

Why are we under the impression that DICE was intending for BF4 to be a major esports title? Pretty sure they were going after pubbers who want to do crazy shit and see things blow up as per usual.

Yeah, I haven't played any Battlefield games in a while, but I never thought of them as a competitive sort of series. It just works really well as a crazy pub game where funny shit happens.

Still sucks the guns aren't balanced well, though.

Have to agree or most of it, except, Famas is in my opinion the best gun. If you learn to control the recoil on it, and with the black/white IR scope, long rage combat is easy. And close range is also easy due to the AMAZING hipfire and the rate of fire.
