not saying you couldnt have gotten better in the past 2 years. just saying without the competition there used to be, the skill level overall has dropped dramatically. the same can be said about CS. the US scene is nonexistent compared to 2002-5. the skill level has to suffer for that, there can be no argument against it.

all i, and i think anyone is saying.. is that the skill level is lower now. regardless if your on the top of the league now, your still not at the same level as in 2004/5. personally i think that was the height of dod. you cant get a more competitive scene than the largest lan in the US.

repeated : you/i all suck at this game now. play it for fun, stop taking shit so seriously. unbind your prone keys etc etc.

Like I said, it's apples to oranges.

And like unpro said, it's just a different monster than it was in 04/05. There was always a progression of players, but I see people like this Blackhawk guy running his mouth and taking things so seriously, having no perception of how he fits into the grand scheme of things in the history of the DoD community.

I quit playing DoD competitively way back at the end of 2003 when I moved to start college. For sure, I continued to play for years, at times more serious than others, but it was never really the same for me as it was in those first two years (01-03). At that time, the community was quite literally building itself from the ground up. Everyone knew everyone, and everyone played CONSTANTLY. Players were VERY, VERY GOOD at this game, but beyond that, TEAMS were VERY, VERY GOOD. It was not uncommon to scrim consecutively for 5-6 hours late into the evening, because we wanted to progress the game and the community as much as we could.

We weren't CS, and there were still many in the competitive gaming world that had never heard of DoD, but there were still always a couple hundred tuned into Gen. Warbuff shout-casting the STA-I finals season after season.

That tight knit community was what set DoD apart from other games that were all trying to model themselves after CS.

This is the problem that I have with the the current group of "top players", and one of the reasons I felt compelled to re-start these forums.

There is no sense of that community, or sense of the history of the DoD community.

No checks and balances for people being douche-bags and/or cheating.

As someone who put a lot of time in over the years, as did a lot of the other beta players you still see around these parts, that's pretty sad.

I've been around this game forever and I think the skill level has actually gone up. If "up" isn't the right word, then it's just evolved to be something completely different. The austins, the pats, taylors, and the toxinators of this community, in my opinion, are among the best players this game has ever seen. Can we say that "cneato would've beat austin in 1vs1 no problem"? No. It's a different game and a different time.

Babe Ruthe was the best homerun hitter of his time, but I guarantee he wouldn't put up the same stats if he was facing pitchers like the Cliff Lees of today.

ok this is NOT what i said lol :E

i was not implying that people were once shitty and got less shitty, i was saying that some people were once shitty but are now making MIND-BOGGLINGLY AWESOME INCREDIBLE SHOTS AND PICKS (but are still retarded and shitty)

i'll get into specifics because a nigga just dont give a fuck, here's how i used to feel playing against ppl vs. now

i would snipe v. people like marshall_drummin, tofuman, cypher, scorch, and it would MAKE SENSE WHEN THEY KILLED ME. common explanations:
  1. "i peeked the wrong spot!"
  2. "they expected me to be somewhere and got a quick prefire, ns"
  3. "I FUCKING DINKED HIM HE HAS 4 HP ARE YOU FUCKNING KIDDING ME?"
  4. "this game is fucking horrible and doesn't work"
  5. "this game is fucking horrible re: 'i heard my gun go off and yet i didn't kill him that's nice' edition"
  6. or simply, "well shit i was just a little too slow that time"
even when i snipe against newer players like pat aka chimpanzee, bra aka "I AM A SMELLY CUNTFARMER" it's usually a case of "clearly homeboy is in better shape than i am and thus less random"

this extends to any other competent player, with any class, on any competent team. the way people pushed, peeked, shot, prefired, made calls to their team, would all make sense, and if you got killed the most you could do was say "well shucks" and try to sprint back and kill _them_ instead this time. felt the same way from when i was pubclanning in ~2002-2003 to my first matches in cal-o ~2003-2004, all the way through cal-m and cal-i, again in cevo-p, at every LAN i went to, and in every season despite how long i was active or inactive, in top form or washed up, playing with tryhards or just having fun w/ e-friends.

so basically you dont get surprised when kellen 1garand's you from 800m on merderet, you tell him "ns now go fuck yourself and don't do it again." similarly no one was surprised when harry "fallen" potter showed up to w2z, did terrible, and looked like he rode their on a fucking dyson vacuum powered by pixie dust.

NOW ALL OF YOU ARE FUCKING INCREDIBLE FOR NO REASON.
LIKE INEXPLICABLY GOOD.

and to the rest of us who have been SADLY PLAYING THIS SHIT GAME FOR 10 YEARS ITS LIKE LOLWAT?

SO FUCK YALL OKAY CUZ IM O.G. CHILLIN.

tl;dr HOW IN THE FUCK IS THIS FOREVER MAIN FAGGOT BLUEREVOLVER KILLING ME ?

I don't have a problem with people being good at the game, and can acknowledge that they are good players. If they want to spend their time playing it as much as they do they are more than welcome to.

I have a problem with people having no perspective on the context of their role in the community, and what it means to be a good player now as opposed to what it meant to be a good player before, as far as what it took to be successful in league play.

Lest we forget, DoD 1.3 hasn't been updated since 2004. It's still the same game, just a vastly different community, and that makes a huge difference.

It's the lack of understanding of that fact by current players that bothers me.

Nah rwc, people are definitely not better than before, remember, the only way to get better is to play against better opponents. When everyone sucks it's nearly impossible to get to another level. I only got decent because I was able to play against some good people before the game died too much, but I'm not getting any better playing against the people who play now. There really isn't any invite level people playing anymore, but it's still fun to shoot stuff anyways

I agree with nomis, but rwc8thc's comments aren't to unrealistic. It's a classic debate in every sport/competitive atmosphere. New school vs old school.

The game is just different now. It's hard to pinpoint it exactly, but it's similar to the change CS had. It went from defensive play to aggressive play. I'd be interesting to see how the old teams of 2000-2004 would play against teams of the last 3-4 years.

It just sucks that the entire bottom half of this community left for DOD:S.

I had multiple paragraph rant but it's probably better to not post it. I'll write my cliffs.

To many members of this community have a false sens of self entitlement due to seniority, these people create a HUGE barrier for new people trying to enter the community. An example was when I was banned from scrimdod for 3 months because FlatOut beat SSSX in a scrim, and the several random weekends I was banned because we won a cal match. FlatOut still has the stigma of being a bunch of cheaters, even though we've cleared a bunch of disputes. Without us, the game would be boring for other teams trying to play decent competition.

Anyways, does anyone know if DOD:S pro is any good? DOD:S makes me want to vom, the heavies suck dick.

I just wish another game that would come out that doesn't follow the Halo/CoD/BF2 template. They are all awful games. FPS games died when Half Life 2 came out.

Dude, there is no community anymore. You're argument makes sense if you go back a few years when much more people were still playing/caring. But there aren't exactly an influx of new players picking up DoD at the moment, and there shouldn't be.

What's left should really just serve a memorial, a resting place. Competitive Gaming is going an entirely different direction than what everyone thought it would half-way through the last decade, and the DoD community, is just a tiny little piece of that legacy, nothing more.

My point is this. Our ship has sailed. At this point, there is no point in playing DoD, or being involved in the community, unless it's simply fun for you to do so.

If you are playing for any other reason, or if you genuinely care about being a TOP PLAYER in this game at this point, you have lost touch with reality.

So, play the game, have fun. But, for crying out loud, quit thinking you are hot shit for rolling tpg-upper.

there is no new school in this game, where the hell did you get that fucked up idea from?

i think what sears is trying to say, and what your missing.. is that people have 0 respect for the old school players. just because they arent that good anymore after 4+ years of not touching the game, doesnt mean they dont know more about the game than you could ever dream of. Its frustrating to be killed by people you know you should be killing too. so that definitely makes some of the old players seem a little assholish. when they call you out for being bad, its simply that. you did something fucking stupid that WOULD NOT have worked back when they played and you would have gotten shit on for it.

you dont have this issue in the CS community as often, probably because the top old school players never really hung out with the lower level guys like the dod people did, so you didnt have that familiarity. the top tier in old school CS is still regarded as the best the game had to offer, and everyone gives them full respect, even relatively new players to the top like nothing and cyx(rip) would gladly give someone like ksharp or naikon a scrim with them just for fun. they would take advice, and not talk shit. just because neither of those players can keep up anymore doesnt mean they dont understand how the game itself works. the CS community realizes that current players are only better in terms of skill than the old school players simply because of how good the old school was, any player in the top teams will tell you this.

the community these days, the ones who didnt play beyond pubs back then, dont understand what the old school brought to the table, and how the game developed to the point it did thanks to them. why do you nade over that wall? why do you spam that spot? why do you wait for that perfect time to cap? because the old players figured out shit, not you.

no, i dont know the old dod scene, but i know the old CS scene. I hold them in similar regard.

haha motive has pretty much nailed it right on the head.

I've been wondering the exact same thing myself. how are the players that barely made it out of cal-o back when dod was at it's peak ('04-'05) improve their skill level to be AMAZING when the competition has decreased 10 folds? I guess there's only one answer to that ;)

On what Sears has been saying, he is right. I remember when I was moving up the ladder with Trademark back in '04. We scrimmed in my eyes more than any other team out there to try and improve our game as a team. We didn't talk shit or be complete douchebags to anyone in the community(well maybe dave lol). We didn't care if we lost because losing in a scrim would only make us better.

That's one thing I noticed from the peak of the community to the newer generation('07) was back in '04-'06, you could find a scrim at any point in the evening ranging from a cal-o team to cal-i. When the newer generation was starting to grow, there were cal-m teams refusing to scrim us simply on the basis of that'd they lose anyways. I think that is one big reason why the game didn't really advance skill wise throughout the lower teams because teams/players were so worried about losing scrims instead of practicing.

Well that's my rant for the day :D

A perfect example of what Motiv is talking about is Mr. Nomis up there. I mean no disrespect by this comment and I'm sure he's a great person, but from my experience playing against him it's just ridiculous some of the stuff you pull off. It's unexplainable.

Then again I'm a washed up vet and have always had a completely different style of play then most snipers who play this game (MUCH more patient of a player)

There's a lot of things that can be said about the skill level gap between today's best players and the best players from 2004-2005, but you really can't judge it that easily.

Here is why..

1.) The best players from 2004-2005 had the opportunity to scrim the other best players nearly every day of the week from 5pm-midnight.
2.) Back in 2005 when today's best players were in cal-open and learning how to play, they continued to learn, while the majority of the top players decided to quit DoD. Today's best players didn't get good out of no where.. you were just gone for 5 years.
3.) The game play in DoD has changed a LOT in the past 5 years.. Just like the game play of counter-strike has.

But yea... I hate how the "old generation" of players act like some of the top players these days came out of nowhere. You started the game at one point, and so did these players.. It just may of happened to be after you quit.

Edit: And when I'm speaking of best players in this day in age, I mean players like Austizzle.. not Blackhawk.

Haha nether, I've always been one of the "sketchy" people, but truth be told, I've just played this game way too much. But I have actually played against some good people, I've sniped against cypher in quite a few matches, jaggon, pretty much anyone good that stuck around after 2007, and after I got off my emachine and ballmouse, I started to get pretty good. And yes, I snipe as if I were a rifle, I don't have much patience :)

We're not talking about players that came out of nowhere, we're talking about players that played when this game was active with good teams still around. Players that never made it out of cal-o during the 'peak' of competition.

In that case, the same things can be said. Those players that couldn't make it out of cal-o during the "peak" probably hadn't started playing competitively till much later than the top players at that time. Either that, or they just hadn't put as much effort in compared to those top teams during the "peak". Where as the top players at the time probably had plenty of prior league experience and such compared to said players.

Doesn't that make sense? It's a pretty logical thought.

You also have to note that players do in fact get better with practice.. and if you add 5 more years of practice, you're going to be a hell of a lot better than you were 5 years ago.

Good points on all fronts.

But, "skill level" aside, I think what unpro was getting at hits home with me as a beta player.

For instance, everyone that plays DoD now knows maps like harrington and railroad. They know where to go, where to throw nades, what corners to peek, where people are usually hiding/shooting from etc.

But, there are a few of us around that were part of the group of players that FIGURED ALL OF THAT SHIT OUT. That were here when those maps and strategies were developed, or knew and played with the people they were named after even.

I couldn't care less really about play style and skill level progression and who the top players are that at this point in the game. What's stupid now, is that regardless of the state of the active community, the vast majority of "top players" at the moment are totally ignorant to why they have a game to be good at in the first place, and feel as if they are entitled to me ballriding them because they rolled me in a 12man (legit or not).

There is a really cool story and history here with the community. It's something that is very unique in the world of online gaming, and it's troublesome to see that element die out in the aftermath. The community was what set DoD apart from all the other games out there. I wish players that still take the game seriously understood that, understood how rare our community has been to have survived for as long as it has with such a relatively small number of players.

just because some newer players act like that doesnt mean we all do.

when i was young (12,13) and first started this game in 2004, i actually spent more time following the game, the teams, the players than actually playing in matches or scrims. although at the time i wasnt actually a part of the community yet, really just on the outside looking in, it was still interesting for me to keep up with it. to be honest i wish i couldve known more about the beta days of the community but i didnt even know what dod was until it came out in retail.

so when i started playing more competitively in scrims/matches and eventually got to play against players/teams that i recognized and followed before, it was really fun for me. even the past few years as a few more of the older people came back to play occasionally, people that i recognized from cal and cpl, its made the game alot more interesting and fun.

and i know im not the only one too. granted there are newer players that dont care about that history, but the entire newer generation of players is not like that.

As far as comparing the skill levels of players now to players then, it's impossible. Completely hypothetical. But I still wouldn't bet against Austin even if he was playing against strifetoe at his peak.

Concerning an explanation for players' increased skill, Taylor really nailed it. The fact is, so much ego still resides in the "old school" players that have come back (jetty & co. BTW I'm just using 'jetty' as a catch-all for cal-i players from 05 and earlier) that they really can't accept reality: players have gotten better in their absence. Back then they were better than everyone because they scrimmed against the best players in the world day and night. Everyone else just scrimmed against who they could find at any moment. It was a closed club. If you were invite you got to scrim invite and never had to touch lower teams. So there was nothing to compare.

But think about it. Even if all the good players left, and just shitties were around, wouldn't they improve against each other over time? Bob learns technique/strategy X to overcome Steve. Steve adapts, learns Y to beat Bob, so on and so forth.

A lot of the old school players are irredeemably washed up, others have picked up the game after 5 years to find they can still play very well. It's not some vast conspiracy. Some players cheat in 12 mans. But it's not in huge numbers like jetty people want to think it is. That excuse is (sadly) just a self-defense mechanism to preserve fragile egos and self-esteem complexes built entirely on dod skill.

i know that for a fact because the only scrims available that didnt consist of really bad open teams later at night were all invite pugs/teams playing. if you didnt want to play a team and just 500-0 em, then the only recourse was to get your shit stomped by invite players.

fun games always though.

There is a distinct difference between how some of the "good" players now play as compared to how good players in the past played. Good players in 2004 had good aim, quick reflexes, and would get the occasional wall/corner shot. Now we have some individuals who get wall shots galore and roll up on you repeatedly without having heard you...hmmmmmm

juliowinnfredo wrote:As far as comparing the skill levels of players now to players then, it's impossible.

I'm nowhere as good as strifetoe, don't kid yourself :P

There are good players in 2011 with good aim, quick reflexes, who get the occasional wall/corner shots as well..

i dont see why your acting like anyones said there arent good players taylor. all me or sears have been saying is that the level of comp is down, so the over all skill level is down as well. this game is not at the level it was 6 years ago. the players are not at the level of 6 years ago, regardless of what the scoreboard says.

Someone is a little bitter! I don't remember ever having a problem with you but if you're POSITIVE it was me. You probably deserved it.
