Pliny the Elder

Post by sevEN »

I was able to get my hands on a bottle of this stuff today. It is a really rare and supposedly epic tasting double IPA. Places who carry it limit you to 1 bottle per customer, and they still fly off the shelves. It also doesn't help that the guy who brews it has had bad experiences brewing in large batches, therefore he brews in small batches and distributes it in very small amounts.

Have any of you tried this beer? What are your thoughts?

I am saving it for this weekend and i will come back and post my opinion...

on a related note, the same company makes a brew called Pliny the Younger, which is even more rare and sought after due to it being brewed only once a year because of the high quality and expensive ingredients used in it. It comes out the first Friday of February, is not bottled, and is shipped to only the most high value clients of Russian River Brewing Co. I'll be keeping my eye out for it in a few weeks.

Yes, a few times on tap at my local brew pub and once in the bottle. I would say I am a fan of most of the beers Russian River makes.

That being said, I have a personal grudge against this beer. I think it is extremely overrated and over hyped. It's a good beer but definitely does not deserve the ratings and praise it gets on beer advocate and the like. Same goes for the younger.

Good ol' Russian river. If you like Belgian style ales, you need to ignore the American interpretations and go straight for the Belgian shit. Try Westmälle, I tried it on tap in Antwerp. 13% trippel ale. Changed my life.

This beer is no joke. I've haven't looked up a TON of beers but I've looked up quite a bit and I've never seen a rating this high.

Haha, this video nails it. I work for a beer distributor in Arizona and they have some crazy names for beers.

Joey, the next time you're in SoCAL, stop at Ballast Point Brewery and get Sculpin IPA fresh on tap. Pliny The Elder isn't all too hard to get down here in specialty beer shops, if you talk with the owners and know which day their shipment will come in. Nothing beats being able to get growlers of fresh beer from Ballast Point or Stone, though.

It's a very good beer. For a double IPA, it's pretty balance and not a hop bomb. Younger is just dangerous because you just can't stop drinking it. It's a triple yet isn't a hop bomb or boozy at all. I try not to go during release of Younger in Santa Rosa because it is a clusterfuck and it's pretty easy to get on tap during San Francisco Beer Week. Have you tried their sours?
